The best fly-in fly-out Indonesian surf experience by far. Only 8 guests max; we surfed 23 times in 10 days, clocking close to 60 hours in the water. Great food prepared by master chef Restu and his team; fast speedboat access to 10-15 breaks (we surfed 8 different breaks); we never surfed with other surfers; a once in a lifetime experience (unless you can afford to go annually!).

OK the trip didn't start well as I was at a dinner party and missed the plane, so immediately on the wallet to get there (1 day late) - my own fault, most likely won't do that again! So the entry to Telo Island Lodge was a little rough for me as I had to speedboat (4.5 hrs) from Nias to Telo via a hellride in a van with a guy who didn't have a license or speak english (except the work crayfish which he bleated after 2 hours in the car). Got there, welcomed and I crashed. Shared a villa with a guy from Sydney, turned out to be a belter! The surf is at your level, lots of wind and tide options, wasn't ever flat and did steam in some 4-7 foot runners. The lineup is basically empty with the odd other lodge sharing. It' seems to be worked out by the guides as to who's going where. The only crowded wave is Max's Left / Missions / Churches (same break different names) which seems to work all the time. The crew there are good people, deckies are cool and guides can show you where to do your thing at your level. The food is OK to good. If you are a big eater you will be hungry some of the time. If you are happy with beer and some food, you will be stoked! If it was my lodge, I'd have a biane marrie with 2 curries (rendeng and chicken/fish) and some rice. Easy done! Clothes washing service is OK, as expected I'd say. I left all my t-shirts there for the young Indo gorms.Take good REEF booties, and if you can take a box of biro's and some spirax pads them give them out to the kids at the Telo "International" airport - they will benefit from it. Don't put washing in 4 days before you leave or you'll never see it again. Take some longnecks up to the Tsunami tower and savour the view and life as you know it. If in doubt about travelling there - just go - you'll never regret your decision!

The surf and staff were great, the food, not so much. In fact half of our party got so sick from the food we couldn't surf for 2 days. There was no papaya, just apples. The best tip is pay in Aus $ as they charge the same amount, 6500, whether you pay in US or AUS$ which mean the American is paying 30% more. I asked them about this and they just blew me off, I'd say Pegasus Lodges are pretty sleazy as far as this goes.

Response from AganoaLodgeSamoa, Owner at Telo Island Lodge
Responded 24 Feb 2017
This was not a mistake in the exchange rate or an overcharge to guests. Prior to January 2017, the Telo Island Lodge had a long-standing policy of charging our Australia guests in AUD and non-Australian guests in USD. We were not alone in this policy as it is in-fact practiced by many other leading resorts in Indonesia and the world, including the famed Nihiwatu Resort (please see the following link: http://www.escape.com.au/.../fc637bf0b6e63dfebee36f8d91a5...). In January 2017, due to the growth of our American customer-base and the continued weakness of the AUD relative to the USD, we elected to abandon the split currency policy in an effort to create more even-pricing across the various geographies of our customer base. In conjunction with that policy change, I have been personally reaching out to our US guests with offers of accommodation for any sense of disparity or unfairness this policy might have created. Over the past six months, Mr. Borte and his party have engaged in a vicious campaign of extortion, threats, and defamatory statements against our small business. While we have happily discussed reasonable accommodation with other groups that have been left feeling aggrieved by our historical pricing policy and would have happily done so in this instance, the malice demonstrated, and blatant extortion attempted, by Mr. Borte and his party have left us with no interest in future dealings with his group. Anyone who has joined us at the Telo Island Lodge knows that we treasure our loyal clients and will go to almost any length to make them not only happy as customers, but lifelong friends. I encourage any past or future guest wishing to discuss our historical or current pricing policies to contact me directly at ryder@pegasuslodges.com. Sincerely, Ryder Thomas (CEO of Pegasus Lodges & Resorts)

Id heard good things from others so decided to give this place a go despite the high price tag.
Positives: The setting lived up to expectations, the boats got us to the waves very fast and the service was first class.
Negatives: For the price charged you would at least expect a pool, waves were not uncrowded as is marketed apart from surfing with the other guest at the resort most surfs we surfed with a boat load from other resorts, add to this i believe the operators of the lodge are building another resort adding even more crowds to the area.
The lodge also only take you surfing to the northern region where most of the waves are B-grade, while talking to guys from other resorts they got access to twice as many waves as surfed the southern areas also where i believe the better quality waves are in the telo islands..

Ok, this is my 2nd review of Telo Island Lodge. I've just returned from my 3rd trip there and am already booked for next year (!).
Great to see that the lodge keeps on improving from an already excellent base. The guides and staff are as friendly and attentive as ever - food got even better - and waves as great and uncrowded as ever.
We again clocked more than 50 hours surfing time - until our bodies started to break down. Ria was always on standby with a much needed massage!
We also did some awesome cave snorkeling and fishing.
Will be very very hard to top this unique surf experience...

I was not quite sure what to expect after traveling literally half way around the world to a land-based surf destination in Indonesia. Most of my buddies have been on boat-based trips and have had varying levels of satisfaction. Telo Island Lodge is a fantastic surf destination for the intermediate to advanced surfer. The level of service they provide combined with the accommodations was well beyond my expectations. The food was excellent. The atmosphere was casual. The staff was friendly. What more could you ask for? A pool and hot tub would have been nice but I understand those amenities will be available at their next property next to the Pinnacles surf break.

After fully paying over $5,000 for 11 day stay, 1 week prior to depart I received notification of the size of boards could only be up to 1.8m, and can be refused on plane, and would have to travel overland at a cost of $300 (scam happening here). Also, thought this was a fly in/fly out resort, but flown to top of nias with 2.5hrs drive to bottom nias, then 3.5hr boat trip from hell, arriving at Telos Resort 1/2hr before sunset - no chance of surfing - so 1 day lost already, then on return leaves at 8am 2nd day lost. Food was disgusting chicken mostly every day, then on top of what you paid per day for the privilege of staying at this overrated place, you then pay for snacks, soft drinks, and not a fresh piece of fruit to be seen. As there was only 3 surfers at the RESORT (i use that term very loosely) the staff/guides were good, thou generally not in any way value for money. I have travelled extensively thru Indo on various charters and resorts, and was not impressed at how this place is marketed - false advertising at its worst!!

Spent 11 nights at the lodge on an epic surf trip.
The breaks were insanely good, coming from Sydney beach breaks. Ok there were a couple of charters coming up from the mets but the crew at the lodge just avoided the breaks where the charters anchored. The food was good, and plenty every day, fish, chicken, beef. Well prepared. I never went hungry and we had loads of fresh fruit after every meal. Our guides were awesome, putting us in the right waves every day. Accommodation was also great, rooms clean and comfortable. I reallly like the lodge, its an epic surf lodge.
The lodge was great, location is a tropical paradise. The Surf, Staff and guides make the trip worthwhile. I will be going back...
