We chose this motel for a local business trip: me accompanying my wife this time. The spa bath was one of the drawcards, but the grounds also attractive. The room was indeed spacious and warm, though the fittings were a little dated. We were happy with the check in service and we chose to eat in town. Post COVID lockdowns one needs to spread the money around. Yes there was some road noise during the night but pretty minimal compared to many highway motels I have slept in around Australia. Motels were located for convenience rather than noise abatement back when they were built. The lake brought many birds to the motel grounds in the morning which we enjoyed. Stawell itself is underrated as there are magnificent views of the Grampians from the high point lookout.

On check out, I was asked "How was Everything?" I answered "I think your website is deceiving" An opportunity to consider what could be done to stop such a statement. But no. It was taken as an excuse for an argument to defend the prices. After being challenged, I explained that the "Cooked Breakfast Voucher" gave the impression that it would pay for a cooked breakfast. The man at the desk proceeded to argue prices with me and defend the website because "He Wrote it" and defended the fine print which stated it could be used towards the cost. The FACT that there is FINE PRINT supports my opinion of Deception. Because I ordered a slice of tomato with eggs and bacon only, I had to pay $9 more for 2 serves. No toast, sour dough bread, tea, juice cost $21 each! No credit for the sour dough toast but charged $9 for tomato? Most establishments charge a flat fee buffet of unlimited eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, tea, juice, hash browns, sausage, mushrooms, tomato. Car park was flooded, door was swollen and required a shoulder charge to open it. Wife could not open it, Fridge door did not seal, water leaked on the floor, Bathroom door would not even stay closed l-great for a Spa room. Facilities very dated, tiles cracked. Before drove off, the desk clerk ran out with a print out of the fine print to justify his argument. He still did not understand, the fact that if the print is small or hidden by asterix, it is DECEIVING! There shall be no return to this aggressive reception who asked for feedback.

We were returning to Melbourne from Adelaide and desperately needed a meal and sleep following a long day of driving. Magdala Lodge and Restaurant didn't disappoint. We were welcomed like a member of the family and assigned (at our request) to the suite that was very suitably adapted for people with mobility issues. Our hunger was more than satisfied with a beautifully prepared meal served in the dining room. My husband is a fussy eater and his steak and vegetables were carefully prepared as he requested. I had the chicken parma which was the best I've ever had and I would kill to find out the recipe for the dressing on the salad. Overall our room was spotlessly clean as was the restaurant. I could not fault anything about our short stay. The Manager was kind and friendly with a great sense of humour and an obvious commitment to customers. Having found Magdala Motor Lodge we have decided that it will be our future stop both ways between our trips between Melbourne and Adelaide.

I read other people's reviews & thought I must have been unlucky. True it has a lovely setting of the lake around one side. I saw ducks, but that didn't make up for the room I had. It was in desperate need of an upgrade. Broken & cracked tiles in the bathroom, no shower screen or curtain so the water went on the floor. Grubby carpet, one of the chairs had a big stain on it. I think the sliding door facing the lake was meant to have a fly screen, but it wasn't there. The pathway around the building on the lake side had loose & missing bricks. My room faced towards the main road which was quite noisy with the traffic, particularly trucks. The staff were pleasant enough, but if this is the best Stawell has to offer I won't be going there again

The bed in our room had a leg missing and one of the chairs in the room was soiled. When we approached the manager he became very aggressive and ordered us to pack our belongings and leave . He could not replace the bed leg but he offered to place two bricks under the bed to level the bed up.As we were only staying one night and we thought that would be acceptable, but he became angry and ordered us to leave.

Response from Robert Di Pietro, Owner at Magdala Motor Lodge & Lakeside Restaurant
Responded 7 Apr 2021
Geoff, that hardly sounds like the full story. Does that really sound like a reason to ask ask anyone to leave? The arrogance and difficulty of your wife imposed set a new benchmark for us and there was simply no satisfying her. This attitude started in reception well before even entering the room, and it was cleary best that we offered you a full refund and the opportunity to find “more suitable” accommodation, and we were very please you decided moved on. Yes, a chair had a minor mark and was replaced immediately, and a bed leg had been broken by a previous guest without our knowledge. We attended to both, but there is simply no end to some people’s troubles. Full house tonight and we have 28 happy guests... can’t please everyone I suppose!
