Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Covid has meant a loss of staff and the bar and bistro are both closed. It also means that the rooms are not as well serviced as they should be. Our room was without soap and the carpet needed a vacuum (crumbs from someone's pizza). For a room with three beds we had two cups and one teaspoon, all dirty. To be fair, when we mentioned the soap they sent out for some and brought extra blankets and cleaning materials on request. I should mention the steep stairs as all rooms are on the first floor. Wifi is free and room facilities do work (TV, fan, heater, electric jug). The hot water in the ensuite bathroom comes quickly and is plentiful.

Bed was hard as a rock, no lamp, 1 blanket on the bed in winter and the noise in the early morning was ridiculous. We would not stay again. Very old and tired looking. The bathroom was the best but as it was relatively modern

This Hotel was very poorly staffed & did not seem to care how my comfortable my stay was. I was happy to leave. One thing was satisfactory and that was the bathroom it had been renovated well but due to the fact i am a right leg amputee & they could not or would not supply me with a plastic chair for a shower i couldn't shower.

After over $5000+ paid by the Salvation Army for my accommodation, with me being homeless, plus what I spent on meals and drink in the bistro, the fey Manager chose to treat me like garbage and not processed my last week's accommodation.
Despite the Salvos contacting him in multiple ways, including his personal email, (which he responded to, Leslie), he never processed the payment.

Below is his email, where he still can't spell my name correctly.
P.S. he has blocked me on the Facebook page.

I am now not permitted to have meals or drinks at the venue.
Hi Brendon, The Hotel provides short term accommodation for visitors and trades people coming to Colac. All transactions are processed through our Bottle shop where receipts are issued. We are not a long term accommodation provider, however we made an exception to the rule during Covid to ensure you were not homeless due to your personal issues preventing you from living at you regular place of residence in Colac. We allowed you to stay for many days beyond what was paid for to support you with the expectation you would ensure we received payment before departing. If you would like to return to the Union please pay the outstanding accommodation charges. Take Care Leslie Robinson Venue Manager

About 20 of us called in for a drink last Saturday after a wedding service. As it was hot and we were all dressed in suits, we asked the only staff member in the bar if it was at all possible if we could sit in the bistro. He bluntly mumbled “its the bar or the beer garden. He the proceeded to pour the flattest beer you would every have in your life. I then decided it might go with the cider. He had to empty the glass twice of froth and then let it sit under the cider tap while the head disappeared. Needless to say it was like drinking warm cordial.
We then all decided to go over to the East Colac hotel where the food, beer and service was unbelievable

What a real let down. Once, not long ago, this bistro was the prefect family night out. However, how they have fallen.... we went here with my family to be greeted by a not so motivated young lady. presentation was very average (does no one in the younger generation put any thought into their appearance anymore? eg. brush hair!) When i asked if they had a highchair please, she pointed and said they are over there (basically in the tone of saying go get it yourself - and i had to, as she wasnt going to). There were only 3 tables of 2-4 in the bistro at this stage - so in no means busy!

They food was below average. The chicken schnitzel was nice, however the $2.00 they charge for sauce was a disgraceful joke! we got the smallest bowl you have ever seen of sauce... wasnt enough to cover 1/2 the chicken schnitzel. I think hubby saud he got one slice of mushroom in his sauce! The chips were cold and the vegies were very minimal and under cooked. Like they were on rashens for veggies or something.

What has happened to this place? Are they in between chefs? We will not be going back to the bistro any time soon.

We have traveled the world and eaten pizza cooked by the world champion. Today I had the best pizza ever at the Union Club Hotel. The Union Pizza is a winner. I offered my congratulations to the chef and was overheard by another diner. He said he was from Darwin and his selection was the best he had eaten. Pity we couldn't return I would have liked to try more of her creations. Just one point. Its only minor but on arrival at 1.51pm we were told to order quickly as the kitchen closes in 9 minutes. Maybe a better welcome and way to put this would be more acceptable. Having written that the bar staff were wonderful young ladies.

Its a Pokies pub, couldnt find any office area so had to go in to TAB area to ask someone behind bar around checking in - took a while walking around to find where I should - almost walked out to find somewhere else to stay when realised it was a pokies/tab place. Whole place stunk of cigarette smoke so not pleasant at all (despite no smoking signs). Shared kitchen is an unclean, office style kitchenette with not much in way of cutlery or utensils.

On plus, actually quiet in room, room wasnt as bad smoke wise as the corridor, and beds were more comfortable than they looked (not great but not terrible).

Went to this hotel with a party of 20 people for a special occasion. The meals were all poorly cooked steaks way overdone, and orders mixed up in numerous cases. A couple of people who had the calamari felt quite ill the next day. Won't be returning any time soon.
