We stayed in the Twisted Willow cottage, and it is a great spot for couples to get away from it all. Slightly off the grid - no mobile nor internet connection, but you are only an 11 minute drive to all the coffee shops and restaurants in Apollo Bay - so a nice balance. The cottage leans out over the pond (one of only two cottages on the pond), and we could spend all day watching the ducks and birds flit about. Five King Parrots were eating the berries in the three next to our deck, and Wag Tails and Blue Fairy Wrens were constantly hopping about.

The cottage was very well appointed and clean.

We stayed in the Twisted Willow Cottage for two nights in January 2014 and loved every minute. The cottage was very tastefully furnished and all the little comforts had been thought of, even instructions on how to ensure the reverse heating in the living room could be shared into the bedroom (it was chilly for January). Plenty of hot water in the shower with great water pressure. The bed was comfortable with nice linens. The kitchen had good quality pots and pans so cooking breakfast was a breeze.

The location was what made this place so special. A quick drive from Apollo Bay but felt like we were very far away. Very peaceful and quiet, the gardens were beautifully kept and the big pond out front with ducks were lovely to look out onto while sitting on the patio having a glass of wine.

Two white clapboard cottages are tucked in a garden, their wooden decks on stilts over a little pond complete with resident ducks and a Chinese-style wooden bridge. It's the perfect setting for a peaceful stay with every comfort. There are four different units within the two cottages - we stayed in the Plum Tree bedsit which featured a huge room with double bed, kitchenette area in which breakfast provisions are left, and a bathroom with a huge spa bath. Breakfast on the deck watching the ducks and listening to the kookaburras was a great start to the day, and hosts Jo and Jock have a stock of DVDs in case you want an evening in. Jo provides a wicked cream tea on one day of your stay. There's a laundry room with washer and dryer. The cottages are about a 10 minute drive out of Apollo Bay, up a lush green rainforest valley. It's a great kicking off point for the spectacular Great Ocean Road, the Otway National Park, and the Otway Fly - a walkway 25 metres up in the forest canopy
- plus much much else to enjoy in the area.

I am sure this is a lovely property, however, we will never know, as the booking we made and received confirmation of was not honoured.

Yesterday morning, I made an enquiry about availability through the stay@paradisegardens.net.au address on their website. By the afternoon, I hadn't heard anything back, and as we needed to make a firm commitment to family, we went ahead with a reservation and booked and paid online. I received two emails, one confirming the reservation, and one confirming the credit card transaction.

Today I received a phone call responding to yesterday mornings email to say that the dates I enquired about yesterday were already booked out. To cut a very long and drawn out conversation short, I explained to the staff member that this was because I had already booked them through the online booking system last night. I asked him to check and confirm my reservation, and he said that I wasn't in the system, and the booking was listed for someone else. How could this be? I had already booked and received confirmation!

He then explained that there is a problem with the system that allows people to double book rooms. It was lucky that I asked him to check my booking, as we may not have known the room was double booked until we turned up at the property! Even if the error had been picked up and we had been warned, it may have been too late to make alternative arrangements. My partner and I have especially organised this time off, and it is not as simple as changing our dates as was suggested on the phone.

The bookings for this property are managed by an external organisation, not the business themselves. Even the phone number listed on the website for the property takes you through to the management group, rather than the owners of property direct.

This is a valuable reminder of the benefit in booking and communicating directly with the property owner, rather than relying on an organisation that manages bookings for them, as there is a greater chance that things will go wrong, as happened in this case. I didn't intend to book through a property manager, I found out about this property from my research on Tripadvisor, and thought I was emailing the property directly when I contacted them.

I don't think it is very fair to send people booking confirmations that have not actually been checked and 'confirmed' (as the word suggests), especially if there is a possibility that they might not actually be honoured! Our initial excitement has now been replaced with disappointment at missing out and frustration over having had our time wasted. We will have to start looking again for somewhere else to stay, although we will not be dealing with any 'Holiday Great Ocean Road' properties of course!

Response from jojock, Owner at Paradise Gardens Cottages
Responded 6 Mar 2014
We apologise most sincerely for any disappointment you have experienced with your recent booking of our cottages. We have had Holiday GOR as our external managers for almost a year and to my knowledge, this is the first time we have had a problem of a double booking occur. Holiday GOR’s booking system is a very efficient one but we wanted to have our original booking system run concurrently with it and through no fault of Holiday GOR, it happened that an online booking was obtained by them only 20 minutes before your booking for the same cottage and dates came through on the other site. To solve this issue, we have made changes to our original booking system so that is more an enquiry (which goes through to Holiday GOR) than a confirmed booking. We believe this will prevent further problems. Again, our apologies for any inconvenience we may have caused you.

Four of us stayed in one of the cottages at this beautiful location for two nights in January 2007. It would be fair to say that it was a stay that was 354 days too short. The cottage was beautifully designed with every conceivable need catered for with simple elegance and style. What really made this stay special, though, were our delightful hosts, Jo and Jock. They were warm and welcoming without being overbearing and had clearly poured their hearts and souls into the place. If you are planning on staying in the Apollo Bay/Otway Ranges area you would be foolish not to stay here. Quite simply a wonderful place and one of the best any of the four of us have stayed in. The cottage (one of two and they have B&B too) overlooks a lake and the whole place nestles in green, lush hills. It is a short drive into Apollo Drive and worth every km of driving to get to.

This has got to have been the most disgusting and disappointing stay of my life, and I have stayed at A LOT of properties all over the world.
I came here with a girlfriend for a weekend away, paying almost $700 for 2 nights.
Our stay has been nothing but disappointing and disgusting and the service we have received has been so poor. We read a lot of the reviews on air bnb before coming, and I wish we listened. Things listed by previous guests, such as a broken toilet seat, had not been resurrected. My photos speak volumes for everything I am about to write.
The cleanliness here would not be accepted at any time, not alone during a global pandemic when in their emails to you they claim to have performed “deep cleans” on their property. LIES.
We arrived to a disgusting uncleaned shower with a razor cap on the floor, a dirty towel/face washer on the soap holder, some disgusting rusted thing that looks like poo and pubic hairs on the glass. The toilet seat is broken. The bath has more pubic hairs. The mirror is filthy. There are ants all over the kitchen, including on the power point, rendering it unusable. The bin was full of rubbish (which you have to take home yourself otherwise they charge you a tip fee - WTF!), there were dirty dishes in the dishwasher from previous guests, there was no doona cover left for the couch bed and the doona has urine stains and some form of disgusting pink stain on it. We refused to eat or drink from anything because of how filthy everything else is - god knows what germs are on the equipment and cutlery. There is ONE log left for the fire for 2 nights. The remote for the heater doesn’t work properly - you can’t see the screen, so you can turn it on, it blows cold air, and you can’t change it, because you can’t see it. Check out time is 10am. RIDICULOUS for the amount of money you pay for a cottage, not a fully booked, fast moving hotel. They ask you to clean up after your dogs (pet hair) but there’s no vacuum, broom or mop left to do this - then they threaten to charge you a $90 cleaning fee if you don’t.
We contacted the number provided, which turns out to be a management company and not the owners. We discussed our concerns. This was day 2 as there’s no reception at the property and arrived late, so had to suffer the first night. We were offered another “professional clean”, which we declined as we’d already done a bit of a clean and didn’t want people poking through our things as we’d settled in. We asked about the doona and asked for a new one. All we were offered was a cover and free coffee. We asked about check out and were offered 2 extra hours, so 12pm. We then requested a partial refund and extra wood, explained more of the situation and our concerns. We were met with a rude reply declining this - making out like the doona, offer for a clean and late check out (which they charge $44 and hour for, hahaha) was enough.

In sum - would we not only obviously never come back - but we will be posting a review to Airbnb and reporting them, google, Facebook and here. We warn everyone to NEVER stay here. This weekend was such a disappointment and the biggest waste of money ever.

The owners and the management company should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the plum tree cottage earlier this year (August?) and were completely blown away by the level of service and attention to detail that was prevalent throughout our entire stay... The house itself was beautifully constructed, and sparkling throughout. The surrounding area was a picture of tranquility and the facilities (whiteware, fireplace, spa) were first-rate. The provisions (breakfast ingredients & soaps etc) were more than adequate, and of very-high quality. The Host was very friendly, and brought us delicious scones on our first day!

It's a tiny bit more inland than most other B&Bs, but well worth the extra drive to get there! Definately worth a visit (or two).

Lovely cottage although we stayed in the plum cottage bed sit. Large enough room with king bed, bathroom with spa, small couch and tea coffee making facilities with bar fridge and micro wave. Wonderful balcony area overlooking the lake. Birdlife abounds, peacefull tranquil setting. Lovely romantic setting. Next time will rent the cottage with upstairs separate bedroom and downstairs living area for a bit more room.

We have just spent four wonderful days in Plum Tree Cottage. Such a gorgeous place it was hard to tear ourselves away to see the beautiful Otways rainforrest. So quiet and peaceful.

Everything about the cottage was lovely, the bedrooms were to a very high standard with lovely linen and very spacious bathrooms. Ideal for 2 couples sharing. The lounge was comfortable and everything we needed in the kitchen and good bbq. Great to have a laundry room too as we had been travelling for a couple of weeks.

The gardens were lovely, and with two very keen photographers there was loads to keep them busy, so many birds and ducks visit the garden. Our grandaughter named the island Chloe Island and had such fun playing there.

No TV or mobile signal but this just did not matter as there were so many other things to enjoy.
I would thoroughly recommend these cottages, great for couples or like us, sharing with family.
