Stayed two nights in March as part of East Coast drive. Check in average just a list of what is not provided due to COVID (no housekeeping, no breakfast available, take a copy of credit card to charge later) however was fast. Note that no other hotel in Tasmania applied these rules so guessing it’s a cost cutting measure.

Room was a family room (for 2) as only one available, good size but very average mattresses (uncomfortable), double and two singles. Parking available outside room.

No curtains/blinds on small windows above door and in bathroom allows light in.

We were after last minute accommodation whilst travelling through and as it was just one night I went cheap. I then read some of the negative reviews and whilst the price reflected that it was a motor inn, I was a bit worried. Well, the accommodation was a delight! The receptionist was lovely, very polite and informative. We had chosen a sea view room The room was the cleanest motel room I’ve ever stayed in! It was as if it was brand new,. The furnishing was contemporary, and chic. It was roomy. The bathroom was stylish and the shower was great. The bed was extremely comfortable, the towels were white and fluffy and the bedlinen was crisp. Our view was directly across to the water, sure there was a road in between but it’s Tasmania and traffic is almost non existent and there was enough lawn not to notice it plus the room was quiet.. We didn’t use the pool or the restaurant on-site. When we booked it was the least expensive available and I expected a motor inn but the rooms are contemporary and new, spotless, comfortable plus a view across to boats on the water.

We enjoyed an excellent meal at Diamond Island resort restaurant last night. Service was with a smile and Korean style food that we chose was delicious and great value. It appears children are welcome with a lovely play corner and lovely atmosphere all up. After the meal we wandered down to watch the penguins from the viewing platform on the property. A wonderful evening

We chose this accommodation as it had a lovely view of the water and it had a restaurant attached. We had a drink in the local bar drinking Tasmanian wine at reasonable prices. Our local fish and chips and calamari were average. Both meals were slightly overcooked for our liking. With children eating free between 5pm and 6pm the restaurant was ever so busy but slowly thinned later. Hopefully the chefs were just busy that night hence the average meals.

The location was great as it is just across the road from the beach and there is a bistro attached to the hotel. The room was clean and spacious and has a balcony with some sea view. However, can be too windy to sit out there. Breakfast was pretty good. The reception is not 24 hrs, it closes after 6pm or so. Overall, a great stay.

Room was nice and tidy. The bathroom was good.

What made this trip poor was the communication.

I got a phone call at about 11am saying that when I got there reception would probably be closed and I would have to check in through the bottle shop. Fair enough. No big deal.

When I checked in, I was told the pub (part of the hotel) would not be open for meals that night and there would be no breakfast in the morning.

If they had been upfront about that I would have found alternatives. This poor level of communication strikes me that they were just interested in taking our money.

Too expensive for what we got considering.

Called in for late lunch & they had BBQ Lamb Ribs on menu. They were magnificent & I have never had better, meat fell off the bone, flavour magnificent.
Wife’s steak was well done when asked for medium but she said it was still nice.
Service was excellent, very clean & staff great.

Pretty poor for $160 a night. The confirmation email “rate description” says room service breakfast and minibar. However, there was no breakfast “ due to COVID” and no minibar. However you could pay for room service dinner which apparently is ok. Felt like they were just taking our money and using COVID as an excuse as we are now COVID free for months in Tasmania. Neither the restaurant staff or reception seemed to care that we had not got what we paid for. Also no soap or toiletries in the room and the shower pressure was weak.
We had sea views but the windows were filthy which marred the view.
Restaurant food was good basic and our waitress was lovely, but a “ misprint” on the menu means that what you think are mains are actually entrees. Apparently too hard to get them reprinted?
Would not recommend this place at all.

Stayed here as part of a tour group; Trade Travel

All rooms need a refurbishment and it looks as if they were doing that with four at the front. My room out the back, #32, left a lot to be desired. Plastic furniture painted a strange orange colour to supposedly look like wood?

This room is right next to the pool so if you want peace and quiet in the warmer months, request somewhere else. It was clean but there was a strange bump in the floor that I almost tripped over and the chairs had been gouged out somehow; very unsightly as well as unhealthy.

Worse was a very steep slope to get to the room with no handrails. Someone is going to have a nasty accident there one day pulling a heavy case that will propel them down the slope and likely fall over; especially problematic for anyone with even slight mobility issues.

No lounge to sit in and relax before dinner: the door to the dining room was locked. Very limited choices of rather ordinary wines by the glass when it did open. The food at dinner was inedible even though it was pre-ordered days in advance; a Trade Travel policy that regrettably, happened with most main meals. Here it was greasy batter with dry tasteless fish and small serve of salad out of a packet (supermarkets do it better). 'Fruit salad' was diced peaches and pears from a tin dumped into a bowl with a sliver of maraschino cherry as 'decoration'. It was so awful one spoonful was enough. It appeared again at breakfast, which was also substandard. We were told that breakfast was at 7am but when we all turned up at 7am it had suddenly changed to 7.30am because 'that's what was on the manifest'. I have no idea who made the mistake, but it was very poorly communicated and managed.

Don't bother with this place or Trade Travel; neither of them is value for money.

Not sure either but it wasn’t late and as others have said was busy. Food didn’t look great. We went down the road to a nice place called Pasini’s for dinner and it was good so returned for breakfast next morning too.
Answer from
Gunns Plains, Tasmania, Australia
The Restaurant attached to this Motel is ok but not what you would call the best. I would try some of the nicer cafes in the main part of town (Bicheno). Such as Pasini's Cafe, Blue Edge Bakery or Sea Life Centre Restaurant.
