Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were enthralled by the Gaol House and learning about all the history of Bicheno. It was a very comfortable place to stay, with a wonderful open fireplace in the lounge room. The master bed was extremely comfortable and we slept wonderfully til the sounds of the primary school across the road picked up.
The original touches of the building were wonders to us, however we’d flag that for people over 6ft tall, you’ll need to be aware of stooping to get through the jail cell doorways!
The kitchenette is more minimally stocked with amenities, but with the knockout lobster restaurant right nearby, it would be a shame to not go out for dinner anyway! There was a lovely touch of fresh milk & a complimentary bottle of rosé for us in the fridge to welcome us.
Really enjoyed our stay here and already talking about our plans to come back and visit for longer. Thank you, team!

We had a 2 night stay in the old school house Bicheno with our 2 children 11 and 16.
Opposite a primary school but quiet when we were there as holidays
Comfortable accomodation in a good location. Had everything we needed.
Would recommend it

Stayed one night, pity wished it was not
more. Our Canadian friend went from room to room taking photos all the time saying Omg. Continental breakfast was an added bonas. Treat yourself and stay there.
It is well restored and decorated keeping a lot of the original features.
We loved it.

Stayed three nights over Christmas. Cottage in need of paint, and although the bedding was fresh and we had clean towels, the bathroom had not been cleaned. The cottage was dusty and the crockery looked as though it had been passed through cold water. Greasy plates. My memory of quoted price differed from what we were charged. Not sure who was at fault there.
Would not go again.

This was a beautiful place to stay. The cottage was different and very interesting which made for an enjoyable stay.
We had to go and collect the keys from Silver Sands (a motel down the road). The lady was very rude and when we informed her that the cottage was lovely although 90% of the butters/spreads were about a year out of date she told "that cant be right I only got them last week' and turned her back to us, this made for a disappointing end to our stay!

We’ve stayed at a few converted places around the world, particularly in the UK - cow shed, apple shed, tractor shed, barn, flower shed, piggery - but this was our first gaol. It was gorgeous, inside and out. The loving attention to detail - the wallpaper; a gun over the lounge fireplace; balls and chains and handcuffs; the two cells have been converted into a shower and a separate bathroom. It was a cold May when we were there, but the fireplace, though not actually that warming, made us feel warm; whereas the very effective reverse-cycle air-conditioning on heat and the electric blankets did make us toasty warm. Add strong wifi; access to a free washing machine; kitchenette with fridge, stove, microwave; tea/coffee and toiletries; powerful hot water with overhead heaters in the toilet and bathroom; and you have a lovely holiday house. Sue looked after us above and beyond; access was easy. Bicheno is a great little coastal town with terrific hot lobster rolls at The Lobster Shack; fairy penguins; and easy access to pretty Wineglass Bay. The Farm Shed, with local gin, whisky and $12 wine tasting is a 5 minute stagger up the road from the Gaol. An IGA, bottle shop, the Long Point Surf Shop and wood-fired pizzas are a stones throw away. Great local walks and the Blow Hole too.
Loved it all, but the Gaol was choice accommodation.

How often do you get to sleep in a gaol? (don't answer that question...) We stayed two nights in the gaol and were totally in love with the place. The cottage is lovingly restored, with so much charm it'll have you taking photos of every room. The goal section dates back to the 1860's and the later section (lounge/kitchen) were built in the 1890's. The toilet and basin are in one cell and the large shower in the next cell....I've never showered in a prison cell before.... The master bedroom is lovely and the bed was very comfortable. The lounge/kitchen is cozy with a decent open fireplace (plenty of wood supplied), two couches, full kitchen facilities. There is a separate dining room and a second bedroom with two single beds. Also has off street parking...there is also charming garden with a few wild rabbits....all this and it's within walking distance to the shops, beach etc..We could not find anything to fault and it was such a perfect way to end our 10 days in Tassie.

Staying here (parents and two adult children) was a unique experience. Convenient location, well equipped kitchen and bedrooms and quirky bathrooms. Excellent heating! The cottage was spotlessly clean and the linen excellent: we could not have asked for more. Bicheno is an excellent place to stay and we could access two national parks and see them airy penguins.

We stayed in the two-storey old school house. Love the look when you first walk inside.

Pluses : comfortable queen bed, air conditioning, great location, very cosy, thoughtful and generous provision of toiletries, good quality loo paper and towels, lovely garden setting with off-street parking.

Minuses: woefully inadequate provision of wine glasses - only 1!
Bathroom , while very clean, is more like a disabled bathroom and very dated.

Would stay again.

We stayed in the Gaol House early September. We absolutely loved it. Very clean accommodation and lovingly restored. Couldnt stop taking photos. It was very cold weather when we were there so the fireplace was very welcome. Ample wood was supplied. Our only negative observation was the grounds could have been more tidy but this did not deter from a most favourable stay.
