I had a two night weekend stay here. I arrived fairly late in the day and at that point I had been instructed to go to the bar and a staff member would sort out the check-in process. This was all very straightforward and done quickly. The parking for the hotel is quite limited and was actually full all the time I was there but I checked with staff and they confirmed that the public parking by the water edge was free and not restricted so my car stayed there both nights without a problem.
My room was perfect, actually quite spacious and clean. The room looked to have been recently renovated and felt quite modern, the shower room looked to have had a partial makeover but some aspects were a little more dated, though as it was clean I didn’t see this as a negative point. There was tea and coffee provided, a little fridge, air conditioning and a neat little sitting area in the room - I would definitely say a well planned out room.
Staff members were friendly and welcoming. I didn’t eat in the bar here during my stay so can’t comment on that aspect.
The general location in Tea Gardens was perfect, very close to other facilities (cafe, bakery, fish & chip shop, ferry to Nelson Bay) and I found the area quite nice for walking over to Hawks Nest and the beaches.
The room I had (number 23) was the first one in the row, so closest to the beer garden area which on the Saturday night did make it quite noisy (I called reception when the music hadn’t been turned off by 10:15pm - they did then turn it off, it seemed they hadn’t realised the music was still playing out there). I think the general noise there is to be expected given people using the external area of the pub and it was only really as I was wanting to get to sleep that it was a problem.
I would happily stay again if I was in the area.

We stayed a night at the hotel and enjoyed a lovely lunch in the pub overlooking a very picturesque Myall river. The room was very clean, basic, but very noisy with all the children staying and the playground right outside our room door, but I guess that can’t be helped. Car parking very limited- car park serves pub patrons also. Bamboo bed head very noisy every time we turned over in the night so didn’t have the best night’s sleep.

We stayed here in holiday season so the price for the rooms were really affordable. The room itself has a lovely decor and comfy bed. It was clean and tidy. Bathroom is obviously the old original but it was clean so no complaints. I was disappointed to find no hair dryer. I didn't take one away assuming there would be one in our room. And no essential toiletries other than soap. No shampoo or conditioner. We were right at the kids playground so very noisy. On the first night it was very loud until 10pm with kids screaming and yelling at the playground. Next time I'd request a room away from the playground if possible. We did not eat at the pub. Prices were quite high $24 for a snitzel chips and salad and a schooner of beer we were shocked at $8.50 a beer!! All in all location is fantastic can walk to lots of places. Price was very affordable for a clean tidy room.

We visit this pub fairly regularly. A few years ago it changed hands and the new owner has done wonders. It is a gorgeous place to visit. It’s in a beautiful location right on the river and the new fitout is totally in keeping with a chic nautical theme. The place is always lovely and clean and a delight to visit. The new owner is passionate, kind and really goes above and beyond to care about the customers experience. He even personally hosts the weekly trivia which is loads of fun!
We were lucky enough to have a small event here in April in the dolphin room and and found the functions staff very responsive and we considered it to be good value for money. We will certainly be recommending it to friends for functions.
If you’re stopping bye don’t pass up the pizzas or the special herb bread, the chef making them is great and they are really tasty! The cocktails aren’t bad either ;)
Thanks, E + T

A Tea Gardens institution, this old pub sprawls along side the Myall River. Its a popular local spot, with a nice beer garden and a large covered outdoor area out the back. The best feature is a regular Thursday night trivia, enthusiastically run by the publican, Ben. In holiday periods, it’s so popular that you need to have dropped by earlier in the day and have booked a table.
The interior of the pub was given a considerable spruce up when the pub changed hands several years ago and the ‘Goldfish Bowl’ room and bistro are now pleasant spaces to sit. The bistro food is pub-grub style and if you stick with pub classics, you will probably be OK (see seperate reviews on the bistro). On the plus side, it is open 7 days a week and does $15 specials Mon-Thursday.
Overall, this is a classic local pub, with a nice, friendly atmosphere that reflects the pub owner’s warmth and hospitality.

The room was fine but they do not warn you the motel rooms are just behind their beer / restaurant courtyard and the night I happened to stay here they had a live band that was perhaps fun for the visitors but not for one trying to get an early night of sleep in the middle of a 14 hour drive. The band members were essentially screaming and pounding on guitars and drums. There is no buffer between the music and the rooms, as well as the drunk partygoers and screaming children. This is not the place to go for a relaxing night sleep - especially in the middle of a 13 hour drive. I was sorely disappointed. Additionally there is no one at the reception desk, if you need to speak to anyone you have to wait in line at the bar to speak to a bartender about your room or reservation, even if you're in your pajamas and have a question. I guess this is a fine place if you're going to drink until late and collapse in bed but not if you want to actually sleep.

We stopped here for lunch on a Sunday. It's a beautifully decorated pub with lots of different seating areas, including an outdoor area that has a playground, so it would be great for families with kids. We loved the "photodographer" in the window! Publican was very friendly and jovial without being intrusive and the atmosphere was happy and relaxed. Our flathead, chips and salad was delicious and it was lovely to sit and sip our drinks looking over the beautiful Myall River. We are going to return and stay a night or two in the near future as Tea Gardens is a lovely little town with lots to do.

We came to stay for five nights. The place has lots of potential to be a cute, cosy and authentic place for a short to medium stay. Unfortunately, attention to detail is missing, and being located adjacent the pub, dining and outdoor/entertainment space you are in for a long night (especially on the weekend).
It felt the rooms are somewhat a side business, with all the attention (service, maintenance, etc) directed towards the food and drinks and the local community. It is hard to separate the two sides of the property and hence we just felt like pub guests at all times. Overall, the staff was helpful and friendly whenever we needed something.
Maybe we came at the wrong time of the year, and it is great to see places like Tea Gardens Hotel to be operating again Ffull marks for the Covid safe measures by the way).
Food and drinks at the pub are good, and the stone oven baked pizza is definitely a highlight. Great location.

As a group we ordered two pizzas as a late lunch, one vegetarian, one meat lovers, they were both undercooked and very light on toppings. The order for the second one also got missed so we were waiting quite a while, kids were starving and ready to leave when it arrived so it got eaten and we left without complaining. Not good value for $18 and $20.

Value for money. Clean, quiet, renovated rooms. 100% will stay here again. Right on the water, so convenient for a relaxing stroll. The children’s playground and beer garden is in the centre of the rooms, perfect for parents travelling with kids, sit back with a beer as the kids wear themselves out.
