Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nice clean rooms with good facilities. The pool area was clean and comfortable with great cushioned deck chairs. Although a little run down with missing tiles in the pool and a very rusted pole that could potentially be a hazard. The kids and adults loved the pool and stayed in until it closed at 9pm. We ate dinner on the table and chairs near the pool area and had a relaxing time.
I unfortunately was bitten by an ant in bed and it was severely painful for hours. Reception were closed from 9.30pm so I couldn’t get an ice pack.
Friendly staff.
Good location.
Hairdryers didn’t work in either of the two rooms we had.

Stayed here with two colleagues. All our meals were nearly inedible, and the prices were very high. My shower had so little pressure that I struggled to wash my hair. A room nearby was a smoking room so my bathroom always reeked. Room facilities were otherwise fine, although nothing flash. Best part is that it's next to McDonalds so we didn't have to go back to the restuarant for breakfast.

I stayed in the John Hunter Motel in Muswellbrook this past week, being the 3rd time I have stayed here on business travel in the past 3 years. The first time I stayed here I was booked in by colleagues, since then I have booked directly with the hotel. I paid AU$120 for the night for a room for 1 person. The room assigned had a Queen size bed and a single bed.

This hotel is large (not sure how many rooms, but it comprises 2 double story blocks linked by a covered walkway), and in each of my stays has been predominantly occupied by business travellers.

Being the week after New Year, the restaurant and bar was closed but room service was available. The staff were happy to recommend a nearby restaurant that was open, and was a good recommendation. When I have stayed there in the past I have had good evening meals in the restaurant, both on my own and with clients.

The hotel is a bit dated, however each time I have stayed there the rooms are in excellent condition and clean. In the summer it gets very hot in this area, and the air conditioning was a 'split system' and delivered cool air with no intrusive noises.

There is a swimming pool between the 2 buildings, but I did not use it.

Upsides - very comfortable, frienly staff, affordable, lots of car parking.

Downsides - can not book online, need to contact the property directly. I tend to prefer online bookings where available.

Would I recommend this hotel to my best friend?
Absolutely

I recommend this hotel for:
Business travellers

I do not recommend this hotel for:
Honeymoon

We spent the final night of our ten day road trip at John Hunter Motel, and it was the most enjoyable of our stops. The manager, Jess was amazing and clearly took pride in providing a friendly and welcoming environment. The room was quiet, clean and the bed comfortable. The dinner menu provided a range of reasonably priced options, which were delicious. We will definitely stay there again.

At best, this is a rundown and dirty 2-star motel. The room was worn, had dirty carpets and a heavily stained bag placement area. There were visible signs of rodents eating the woodwork, and I even had to kill three cockroaches. The bed was uncomfortable due to sagging and poking springs in the mattress, and the toilet hadn't been flushed by the previous guest, leaving a strong urine smell. Finally, the Fire services are not up to scratch with a dysfunctional smoke alarm in the room, and in the hallway, where there were places for three extinguishers, there was only one present. The other two were missing, causing me to feel very unsafe.

Do NOT stay here
Received confirmation of booking from booking agent AND motel. Received confirmation of checkin details from motel.
Upon arrival, manager gave the very strong impression of being intoxicated… manager said booking agent payment had not come through despite email confirmations - so would not allow checkin.
Manager was advised of personal situation - but did not care.
Manager was advised things were being recorded - manager did not care.

Left with no accommodation, no where else to stay and on the streets .

Manager did not care

It had been about 2 years since we had been away for even a weekend so even a weekend in muswellbrook for a family wedding seemed like a real treat.
Unfortunately when we arrived at the motel my dad had organised ' so we were all together' we were met with a room that hadn't seen renovation since the 80's. The fixtures were so old they were yellowing and the linen was so worn and faded that you had to feel sorry for the fabric, why hadn't it been allowed to retire yet after so many years of service?
For a rare occassion we just couldn't bare to stay, we left immediately to find something else which was at least equal to the level of quality we have at home, after all we hadn't signed up to go camping for the weekend.

The motel is clean and in a good location. Staff were very helpful. Unfortunately the WiFi was not working and they had trouble getting it to work. Also - there are no Power Point's near the bed - not good if you have medical equipment. Luckily I carry an extension chord - but this failure annoys me. Other than that - a pleasant stay.

The room was clean and the bed comfortable. Was fortunate to have a room at the back so it was quiet.
However, maintenance is lacking. The tap in the basin was leaking, the shower screen glass was cracked, the security lock on the door was broken, as was the sliding door lock. Not good for $135 plus credit card charges.
I went to reception and asked for some milk and was told it would be delivered to me. It wasn’t.
I chose this motel because it had a restaurant but it was tied up with miners. They suggested getting takeaway which was fine, but I had no utensils or plates.
