Detailed Reviews
Hubby & I stopped here overnight whilst driving from S.A. to QLD. There was very limited accommodation left in Muswellbrook so we hesitantly booked into this Motel. The outside of the motel from the road is not very inviting however, what a pleasant surprise we had during our stay. To start off, the receptionist was very friendly. When we opened the door to our room we were greeted by a spotlessly clean room. The towels were folded very neatly on the bed, the room was set our with thought with electricity plugs near the beds for phones to charge and a sleep apnea machine to be plugged in. There were even 2 champagne glasses in the room. And the entire room was VERY CLEAN!! We stayed at numerous hotels, motels and apartments during our 2 week road trip throughout rural Australia and honestly, we originally thought this was going to be the worst overnight abode and it ended up being the best! I can't recall our double room type we had but it was ground level and obviously had been recently updated. They discount the room rate if you pay cash. We didn't ask, they just offered. If we are ever back that way we will most definitely stay again. A typical case of not judging a book by its cover!

We needed a motel for one night enroute to Sydney, so the Red Cedar Motel gave us beds but it was in a noisy location with unfriendly hosts. We were disppointed and won't stay there again. Expensive for what we got.

It was okay! Much nicer room furnishing than I had thought to expect and very cheap too. Very clean. Good location. Noise from lots of workers coming and going and parking very difficult. Some traffic noise. Overall for the price I say it's fine.

When a family member stayed at the Red Cedar, they had to call me to come and pick them up, due to a personal issue. Their reason for calling me, through, had no connection to the motel or management.
When I arrived, the owner (male), immediately engaged in intimidatory behaviour. He put his face right up against mine and kept telling me to hit him, which I did not. Even when I kept stepping away from him, he continued to advance towards my, trying intimidate me into starting an act of violence.
The lady who I presume was his wife, eventually saw sense and helped me to collect the family member in need.
Meanwhile, the male owner continued to try to intimidate me by using offensive language and repeating phrases in a childish taunting manner.
As my family member was trying to leave, the male owner forcibly too their belonging from them (bags and a suitcase) and threw them at me.
Although speculative, as it was Xmas day, I can only assume that he was drunk. I cannot understand why someone would act in the way that he did if he was in a clear state of mind.
Although I cannot speak about the condition of the rooms etc, I can tell you that the owner has a lot to learn about dealing with challenging situations.

stayed in a budget single room which was fairly out dated which I didn't mind for the price but it could have been cleaner.. mirrors had not been cleaned and there was something sticky under the plates and mugs on the breakfast bench area.. lovely staff and close to Chinese restaurant and pub but just not clean enough for me :/

Needed a night's accommodation when travelling for work and the website for this place look modern and slick, unlike other nearby motels. Upon checking in, I was surrounded by mining men in their fluoros and felt like the only female in town and a bit uncomfortable. The owners were very nice and friendly. Though I was a bit disturbed when my room number was loudly announced to the crowd in reception. I was given a room in a tin shed that looked like mining accommodation. The door on the bathroom came clean off its rails. The shower did not stop dripping all night long, not matter how hard I turned the taps off. The trucks on the highway zoomed past loudly all night long. Could not pick up my own wifi in the room either. There was a heater but it was so loud, it wasn't possible to leave it on at night. At least there was an electric blanket. The only places to eat nearby was McDonalds, KFC or pizza. Not a great experience.

Response from redcedarmotel, Manager at Red Cedar Motel
Responded 20 Aug 2013
Thank you for the review, and for the chance to respond; we’ll do this point by point. 1. We’re pleased that our website looks modern and slick in comparison with others in town 2. “Surrounded by men in fluoros … felt … a bit uncomfortable … a bit disturbed when my room number was loudly announced to the crowd in reception”, well, Muswellbrook is a coal mining town and 90% of our guests are workers and contractors. And they mostly check in between 4 and 6pm. If you had mentioned yourunease to us, we would have immediately relocated you to another area of the motel, at no extra cost. Since we’ve been managers here (20 months), there has never been even a whisper of inappropriate behaviour from any of our male worker guests towards a female guest 3. “… a room in a tin shed”. We don’t have tin sheds –your room was in the older wing of the motel and is constructed of concrete, timber and cladding. Had you chosen a premium room for $35.00 more, you would have been in a newer more spacious room. Our advertising on all web sites feature pictures of both types of accommodation. 4. You reported the problem with the bathroom door rails when you checked out – it was immediatelyrehung 5. The dripping shower was reported later that morning by the housekeepers and fixed before the next guest arrived 6. A strong wireless signal is available to all rooms in the motel – the signal was boosted nine months ago. Until now, we have not received any complaints. 7. Yes, the older in-wall air-conditioning unit is loud, but each room is also supplied with a small fin-type oil heater 8. There are places much closer to eat than KFC and McDonalds. The Workers Club, the Valley Hotel, the Prince of Wales Hotel, and a Chinese restaurant are all within about a minute’s walk Paul Hewson, Lorraine Johnston, Managers, Red Cedar Motel, Muswellbrook.

Booked this one online based only on the reviews. I just needed somewhere cheap for a quick overnight stop on the bike.
I was a little surprised to see inside the "Donger" a quality bed, with good quality sheets and pillows. It makes all the difference. The showers were good and the room was quiet despite being near a major intersection. The bonus, theres a pub with good quality food right next door. This is nothing more than a transit hotel and I needed a good night rest, warm shower and good food. Check check check. Oh and the Host, was super friendly and helpful. Thanks.

Stopped by for an overnight stay and loved the ambience of the budget room. Was informed when I made the reservation over the phone that since we will be arriving late, the room will be warmed up and a bedside lamp left on for us. When we did arrive after 9pm, found that to be true (much appreciated). Decent accommodation. Clean, comfortable and cozy. Definitely recommendable!

Accommodation is difficult to find in Muswellbrook, and most is fairly pricey if you are just after a stop over. Looks may be a bit deceiving at this Motel. I upgraded for a few extra dollars and received a clean, fresh room with everything you need. Traffic noise was surprisingly minimal, and the early morning workers were able to leave quietly without idling their Diesels. The only issue I had was trying to find an accurate tax invoice.
