So close to Sydney yet a dreamy lifetime away and settled into a beautiful campus of gardens sits the Lilianfels property in the historic Blue Mountains.
Meticulously tended gardens of box hedges and temperate flowering bushes and trees directly on a crest overlooking the dramatic gorges of the Blue Mountains is the setting for this hotel.
The atmosphere within is plush and American clubby - toile wallpaper and drapes, brass accents and pleated lampshades, highly polished wood furniture, downy beds with plump duvets, matelassé covers and feather pillows. All perfect for chilly mountain evenings.
Rooms and en suites are spacious. My only negative comment which is a general bugbear is the tiny soaps which this hotel and many others still offer. So much luxury but a skimpy little wrapped up soap looks meagre and I cannot imagine the waste. Why not move on to wall mounted larger bottles of good qualitybody wash which don't need re-filing every visit?
Rooms are generous, and our garden view had a gun barrel view of the dramatic cliffs. That's of course when the mist wasn't hanging low over the mountains!
Lilianfels is situated perfectly in the mountain town of Katoomba. The hotel is just a five minute walk to the look-out for the famous Five Sisters gorge, and walking tracks begin from the lookout in every direction. The hotel is also walking distance into town where great cafes and restaurants beckon. (Try Frankly My Dear for excellent coffee and amazing breakfast offerings).
Back at the hotel, enjoy a world class spa, complete with indoor pool and great treatment offerings, a beautiful outdoor pool set in classical gardens, and a well fitted out gym in its own stand alone and charming little building.
The hatted restaurant Darley's is at Lilianfels but sadly it was closed on the days we were there (Sunday and Monday). We ate at Echos instead (also part of the hotel's Escarpment Group) and didn't feel like we had missed out. Delicious and refined with Thai and Vietnamese accents, our meal rivalled any top meal we'd eaten in a big city.
The views from our table were staggering......
For more casual meals, the re is also Miss Lilian Tea House on the property open for lunch and early dinners (Last orders at 8.30 pm).
The slower pace and dreamy atmosphere, the beautiful architecture and gardens of the Lilianfels property, the amazing location and the unobtrusive staff made this a very special stay.
We can't wait to go back!

My wife and I spent last Friday and Saturday night at Lilianfels in a deluxe view room. The hotel looked about half full, maybe less.

The location is perfect for the views and proximity to the key tourist spots of Katoomba (Three Sisters, Echo Point, Scenic World etc).

Front of house service was excellent and plenty of staff around. The barman was run off his feet though on pre-dinner drinks on Saturday night. He needs another pair of hands.

The room was very well appointed, albeit with rather “quaint” looking decorations including brass bed head and fabric canopy above. Bathroom was spacious. But the bath was perhaps the most shallow one I have ever sat in. You won’t get piping hot sitting in this in the middle of a cold winter’s night!

Indoor and outdoor (heated) pools were lovely. Darley’s Restaurant is an absolute stand out.

Highly recommended

Spent 3 days here and really have nothing to complain about this beautiful heritage building. Reception was helpful and professional and they directed us to the underground garage to park. We booked the spa room which was large and comfortable with a plentiful supply of coffee, tea and milk. Breakfast was taken in the large specially set aside area where there was more than adequate choice. The waiters were polite and efficient and happy to attend to individual whims eg extra fruit for cereal etc, even a few rolls to take away. There is no shortage of things to do her. Whether it be the pool for a swim or a game of pool indoors.
There are 3 excellent restaurants, a bistro type in the main building and two mere minutes away in the complex - Darleys for fine dining (small portions) and Echoes (which we preferred - better value)

We were impressed with the adherence to Covid rules and appreciate the need for people to sign in to each restaurant even though guests. This is the main reason that we in NSW have had NIL cases over the past weeks and overseas writers who come onto forums such as this and criticise just don't get it!!

My husband and I spent 4 nights at this hotel. So disappointing. When we checked no one offered to carry our bags or explained what facilities were available. When I asked if we could have a drink in the lounge the bar tender said he was flat out. Maybe he’d have time get get us a quick drink if we’d have it in the reading room rather than the lounge. One day whoever cleaned the room “ forgot” to give us soap, shampoo, tissues or a clean face towel. Breakfast was a fiasco. Clearly modifications have been made because of Covid but management has implemented a system where you queue to get in for breakfast , then queue to point out to a staff member what you’d like to eat. She then plates it. Coffee arrived up to 30 minutes after we’d finished our food. I have no idea why patrons can’t be given a menu at the table and place an order that is delivered to their table.
For a hotel that is charging top dollar the service and experience were not even average.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences during your recent stay with us. We are sorry that we have fallen short of your and our own high expectations. We need to acknowledge that under our COVID safe plan we are unable to offer some of our usual services like porterage and valet parking. We acknowledge some of the challenges we have faced during our reopening period post shutdown and we know that we are still adjusting to the new normal. We have taken all of the feedback from our guests and teams and are working hard to adjust. I have passed on comments regarding forgotten replacement of amenities to our Housekeeping management and our F & B Director for your coffee service and would like to apologise in this regard. We do hope to welcome you back again soon and take exceptional care of you.

Stayed one night over the Australia day week end. First thing you notice on arrival is how every thing is so well kept and maintained and this impression continued right through the hotel. The room was large and spotless and the whole hotel is decorated in the country/heritage style which had a warm and relaxed feel to it. All very nice. Every thing looked relatively new. From the carpets to the spotless paintwork and the furnishings. Our room on the second floor was very quiet. One of the reasons we booked here was that they had a bath tub which is some thing my partner likes and very few hotels bother listing it in their inclusions even when they have one. Very close to Echo point and a lot of the attractions. Plenty of parking on site too. For ma luxury stay in Katoomba it is highly recommended

Husband and I were celebrating our 10 yr wedding anniversary, and whilst the hotel was kind enough to present us with petit fours, unfortunately the rest of the weekend was very disappointing.

The room was nice, but I wouldn't pay $700 for it as is was very basic and all you recieved was some milk and 2 x 500ml bottles of water.
The dinner was exceptional at Darley's restaurant. I can not fault the food or the service (when you could find someone). It was a 3 course meal for $135 and both my husband and I enjoyed every morsel.

The reason for the poor rating is the overall service. We ended up paying just over $950 for the night including the dinner. For $950 I would expect to be treated like royalty.

The first hiccup came when we thought we would go down to the lounge for a pre dinner beverage. The wait staff looked at us like we had two heads. What? a pre dinner drink?: you haven't booked!
We didnt think we would need to book a table for pre dinner drinks at a supposedly 5 star hotel.
We were told to go to the restaurant as they had a bar area. We did , and thankfully there was an adequate bar area. We overhead another group as confused as we were about the lack of pre dinner options.

As I said, dinner was exceptional but it was clear that they wanted us out of the restaurant well before 10pm. Keeping in mind that our reservation was not until 8pm, it was a 3 course meal so you would want to be able to take your time and enjoy the ambiance.

By around 9.45 when we wanted an aperitif to finish off dinner we could not find a waiter and when we did he did not appear to possess any peripheral vision as we had to call him over rather than get his attention with a hand gesture.

Once finished we thought it would be nice to have a post dinner drink to enjoy the ambiance in the lounge. Keep in mind that you are in the middle of nowhere and there are no other options but to stay at the hotel. At just before 10.30 we entered the lounge area to find that the lounge was closing. I would have thought at a 5 star establishment it would have a bar area open until at least midnight.
The guy at the front desk looked at us as though we had two heads again to think about a post dinner beverage.

I have no idea what other people do at Lilianfels before and after dinner but my idea of a night away does not entail sitting in my very bland room watching the 10 free to air tv channels.

I understand that this is also a spa and wellness centre and I understand there are restrictions with COVID but to not have any options for before or after dinner is very disappointing.

Save your money and go elswhere. No wonder Aussies go overseas. For almost $1000 a night you can find yourself at an outstanding hotel where you are treated like a valued guest.

Our stay at Lilianfels was everything and more that you can expect from a 5 star hotel. The staff was exceptional, especially Naman at check in and the F&B service team at the Lobby Lounge. Breakfast was delightful and service was quick and efficient. Also, I must mention that when I went out sightseeing I realised I forgot to put the housekeeping service card out to clean my room, however, I was pleasantly surprised that my room was serviced when I got back.

Although everything was exceptional, I must mention the following just so that the hotel can avoid small things that affect an overall experience:

1. There were cobwebs in certain parts of the room, particularly in the lampshade near the window and by the bed.

2. When I was confused between booking Lilianfels and another hotel for our stay for 2 nights, I had called the hotel to check how the F&B, Spa outlets, etc. were operating due to covid. I literally said, “I am looking to book for 2 nights for 2 adults on XYZ date”, and before I could say any further, the gentleman on the phone said, “Look, there’s no point calling for discounts, the prices are the same as online.” I was shocked at the response and didn’t say anything further. I had then decided not to stay here, but my sister insisted. I had written about this on google reviews, but I took it down after staying since we had a good experience. But things like this can really put people off.

This is a lovely hotel and I have been looking for an occasion to stay here. I have stayed in their other properties, so at the end of COVID lockdown and for my birthday I decided to treat the whole family to a get away. After a couple of thousand dollars later, what a disappointment!!

I booked directly with the hotel 5 weeks in advance, organised 3 rooms and dinner for 7 people. Told the hotel it was a special occasion and was assured that we will have a great time. So here I am with a room on the ground floor facing a driveway. I have to keep the blinds closed as there are cars driving past at all times. And not even a small acknowledgement of my birthday. This is not service I expect from a 5 star hotel. So very disappointing!

We have stayed at Lilianfels a number of times over the past fifteen years. Initially, the hotel was a really luxurious, well appointed, very homely establishment with delightful rooms and furnishings, excellent staff and many small touches to make the experience special and well worth the premium you paid to stay.

Unfortunately, over the years we have seen the standards drop (while premium prices have been maintained) and our latest stay was no exception. This is no longer a six or even a five star experience! Our Executive Valley View Suite enjoyed magnificent views but the furnishings and paintwork were in need of freshening (I would have thought the recent lock down was a perfect opportunity for management to get the hotel right up to standard) and the walls are too thin, with the TV, conversation and the flushing of next door's toilet very obvious. We also had a problem with a noisy air conditioner in the middle of the night and when the maintenance man promptly fixed it the next day he told me that the filter which had caused the problem should have been changed long ago (surely routine maintenance!!).

Staff and service were not up to scratch, with the exception of long standing staff whom we recognised and who maintained the old standards. While generally friendly, many of the staff seemed undertrained, inexperienced and lacking basic skills such as removing empty plates and glasses as they delivered new items or passed the table after serving another in both the restaurant and lounge. The staff all wore smart uniforms but, at the risk of being pedantic, many of them sported totally inappropriate footwear, with the lounge hostess wearing a pair of scruffy, dirty old riding boots with her trousers tucked in!

The food was excellent and we thought in the circumstances the breakfast arrangements worked well. We were very annoyed that we were not told either prior to our arrival or on check in that the spa was closed due to the virus and that on checkout additional and items had been added to our account for a dinner and high tea for which we had a fixed rate paid in advance. Reception could not explain these and agreed to delete them but I note that one of them was recharged to my credit card after my departure without any advice or explanation.

While we enjoyed our stay at Lilianfels, this is certainly no longer a premium experience and does not justify the very high rates charged anymore. Such a pity!!!

We just spent two nights at Lilianfels at Katoomba. Whilst the room was reasonably comfortable, it was absolutely NOTHING like we saw in any of the photos. We paid for a "Deluxe View Room", which was suppose to have a lovely canopy over the bed and nice wall-paper, together with a "view" over the mountains. When I phoned to make the booking, I specifically asked if the room was like the photos and they said "yes"...... well it wasn't !! I asked the Reception Staff why it wasn't what I asked for and they just said "we have been in the process of modifying the rooms" and that they had nothing available which looked like the photos. I suggested that they "update their photos", because it borders on "false advertising". I suspect all the photos were taken when the hotel first opened, which was MANY years ago.
When I pay almost $500 per night for a room, I expect to get what I pay for. There wasn't exactly a "view" either..... the view was just gum trees across the road, or the brick wall of another building..... not happy.
The best part of staying there was the location and proximity to the bush walks and Scenic Skyway, which was excellent.
The lady in the breakfast room, named Yolande, was extremely pleasant and helpful, however the Asian staff (not being rascist here) couldn't understand me. The breakfast food was supurb and very tasty. One breakfast is big enough for two people.
I'm not sure if I would stay here again, but at least if I do, I will know what NOT to expect.
Cheers.
