Detailed Reviews
Coogee Beach House is all you need in a budget hostel. Having never really done the hostel thing and being in my late 20's, I was a bit dubious about booking a hostel with images of 18 years olds partying until dawn, commandeering the kitchen and basically being a rendition of my University days, but I was pleasantly surprised with what Coogee Beach had to offer. Okay so as a general rule of thumb, it is more for the younger traveler and did to some extent remind me of student halls, but for the older traveler, if you are looking for a cheaper alternative for accommodation, this is definitely probably one of the better hostels for peace and quiet. Parties aren't actually allowed here - if you are young and looking for the 'proper' hostel experience, you may want to check out one of the other hostels in the area if partying is your thing.
This hostel is very clean - I was extremely impressed! The communal bathrooms are immaculate - this was probably one of my biggest fears - and so is the kitchen. Breakfast is included with bread for toast and cereal that you make yourself and complimentary tea and coffee. The kitchen is also well stocked.
I had a private, twin room which to my surprise had a TV so if the common room (which is very homely and a good space) is too much for you, you can seek the haven of your room no problem. The room was small, but very clean with the standard 1960's carpet and bunk beds with one or two springs digging their way into the night (it's no dreams mattress!), but for a budget hostel it is exactly what it says on the tin and was more than adequate for my first 2 weeks in Sydney.
The staff are very helpful and friendly, especially Pam who was happy to answer my questions about bus routes etc. She even let me store my luggage there when waiting to move into my new place.
The only thing I would say is that it was very cold in the rooms. I arrived at the end of winter (August) and found myself digging through my suitcase for extra clothing at night. There aren't heaters in the room but extra blankets are available on request and if you go in the winter I would suggest an extra blanket! There is no free WiFi which can be annoying but you can purchase vouchers from the front desk which you do not have to use in one go.
You can't beat the location. It is a stones throw away from the beach, which is gorgeous and around a 5 minute walk to Coogee Bay Road which hosts lots of coffee shops. Walk straight up Coogee Bay Road and you come to Randwick which has more shops. Take a left at the top of Coogee Bay Road onto Perouse Road then onto St Paul's street and you'll find bars and restaurants and an old fashioned cinema that I love! It is also excellent for buses. Take the 373, 372 from the crossroads of Arden street and Coogee Bay Road (2 minutes from the hostel) into CBD (City centre) and Circular Quay (for Sydney opera House) or 313, 314 for Bondi Junction.
If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to a hotel and aren't overly fussy then Coggee Beach House can give you all you need.

Place was clean and tidy, including the shared bathrooms. Friendly and helpful management. No drinking policy which I appreciated. Great location right next to the beach. On the down side, my room was right next to a bathroom with a fibro wall which was disturbing to sleep. Also, being an older style building the noise of talking and music from other bedrooms really travels and kept me awake well after midnight. Not airconditioned and only one thin blanket on the bed so I got a bit cold. I was also curious that the room was 'approved' (according to the official notice on the back of the door) for one person but was clearly set up for two people with bunk beds. Being in my 50's I think I'm not up to this style of accomodation any more but the younger back packers seemed to be enjoying the place. Not for an older dood like me.

Me and a friend ended up staying here for 10 nights, we shared a twin room which was small but ok, room was kept very clean and so was the rest of the hostel. There is a free breakfast between 08:30-10:00 of cereal and toast which is very handy when you are in a travellers budget!
There is a nice common room which is cleaned daily and is a great place to meet other travellers, hostel staff on the whole are very friendly and especially Daniel who was friendly and always happy to go out his way to be helpful.
Great location right by coogee beach and near to shops bars and restaurants, if I could make one suggestion it was be nice if there was some soap in the toilets and maybe some hand towels, otherwise very pleased with our stay here

I've stayed in this hostel 3 times now, and it has been a pleasure each time. The staff are friendly - even the manager takes the time to get to know the guests.
Plenty of bathrooms available and the kitchen is well equipped. Plenty of social space, too, with a living room downstairs and a large covered balcony upstairs. Bedrooms are good - there are clothing rails to hang your clothes which is a bonus! I stayed in the 4 bed female room.
Laundry costs are on a par with every other hostel at $4 but, unlike other hostels, there are washing lines available instead of having to pay for the dryer.
A lot of people staying here are long term whilst working, which is always a good sign. Calm relaxed atmosphere - even at the weekend.
I would (and do) recommend this hostel to anyone staying in Sydney. If I find myself in Sydney again this will be the first place I look for a room.
Thanks for a great stay, Coogee Beach House.

Very confused at all the good reviews. Staff were not that friendly, rooms were a bit dirty and while one bathroom was very nice, the other had two cockroaches to share your shower with. Right by a loud street so you can’t really sleep past 7am, and they say they have parking, when it’s really just finding a street nearby.
Wouldn’t really recommend staying here.

Had a lovely stay - so close to beach and public transport, comfy beds and clean facilities. Plenty of places to eat and walks near the ocean - great views and nice atmosphere. Felt safe with No issues

Dirty, noisy and un-welcoming. We stayed here only one night as we really couldn't face staying at this
Hostel any longer than that even though we had already paid up front for two wks! The hostel has a no refunds policy so we did not receive any refund on this. Not at all what we expected.

So, this hostel has an upper age limit of 45 in their dorms. Not sure how this is allowed without disclosing it during the booking process. I had booked for a 2 day visit next February - if it hadn't been for the fact that I asked a question in my booking (& got a reply regarding the age limit) I would not have known I'm too old until I turned up to check-in!
Non disclosure is a serious thing - I suggest they amend their websites to include this discriminatory policy they've implemented.
I've travelled all over the world and never encountered an 'upper' age limit in hostels anywhere but this one.
Very disappointed - and offended.

I have stayed in many hostels over my travels and I have never stayed anywhere as bad as the Coogee Beach House!!! First of all we were greeted and shown around by a girl who clearly couldn't care less about her job! Our room (if you could call it that, more like a prison cell), was tiny and dirty! The sheets on the bed smelt and felt like they hadn't been washed in years! I wouldn't usually expect a TV in a hostel room so that was nice, except it didn't work (why have it in there)!
The walls were like paper so you could here everything that was going on inside and outside the hostel all night so don't expect to be able to sleep here!!
The toilets and showers were awful! Taps falling off the walls, mould everywhere!!
They say they have a car park, they don't! They say they have wifi, they don't! We booked to stay there 2 nights but left after the first!
Horrific! DO NOT STAY HERE!!

My wife and I (early 30s) stayed at the Coogee Beach House in November 2014 for two nights. We found it to be loud and unclean. The staff was not friendly or helpful. The one upside is that the accommodation is located very close to the beach. If we return to Coogee again, we will be staying elsewhere.
