We stayed in The Tea Tree bungalow for a few days as part of a recent visit to Tasmania. The owner, Joy, was a pleasure to deal throughout the booking process and when we arrived. The bungalow had a couple of bedrooms, a bathroom with 2 showers, a decent sized sitting room and dining area and a well appointed kitchen. Good location, and Queenstown is a great place to explore the local area from. We went on a Roam Wild trip to Kelly Basin so we could walk to Pillinger (arranged by Joy) and be sure to check out what is going on in the Paragon Theatre when staying with them.

A trip to Queenstown for a family celebration required accommodation for 2 couples and one of the restored cottages at The Anchorage fit the bill perfectly.
The cottage situated on the edge of a productive kitchen garden was well equipped with breakfast supplies laid on. The two queen sized bedrooms were warm and comfortable with a spacious lounge to relax in. The fit out was quite retro with all the comforts of home.
The host Joy invited us over to the Paragon Theatre, another of her renovation projects, for a drink at the bar. There are films screened to be viewed from comfy leather couches up in the Dress Circle and simple meals to be enjoyed here as well. The floor is quite something to behold and do explore the building further to imagine what it was like in its hey day back in the early 1930's.
Centrally located for wanders around this historic mining town and close to the West Coast Wilderness Railway station for a ride on the steam train to Strahan 35 kms away. The main house also offers comfortable queen size bedrooms with a common kitchen for breakfast preparation.

I’ll be honest - we weren’t expecting much from a mining town and just thought of it as a convenient stop off point. But the mountainous terrain around Queenstown is visually stunning! The accommodation was great value for money and we thoroughly enjoyed dinner and an old black and white movie at a restored historic theatre (also operated by the hosts of Mt Lyell Anchorage) with comfy leather couches and snuggly blankets. It was a unique experience. We’d come back here for sure, to do the train ride to Strahan and a Gordon River rafting tour.

Dark room. Dingy lighting. Heavy sheets and blankets. Had to fill the jug via the shower. Hugely overpriced at $180 per night. Insulting "breakfast" consisting of 2 slices of bread, 2 small portions of butter and 2 small portions of jam. "Joy" was anything but. Glad to get away. Will never visit again and will advise others not to.

Response from Joy Chappell, Owner at Mt Lyell Anchorage
Responded 26 Apr 2021
I must say, I find this review confusing, not least because I have no record of you staying at my property. However, I would like to respond to your comments, just to set a few details straight. I have 3 rooms which I charge $180 for. All are painted a nice light green colour with 12 ft high white ceilings and white window trims. We have normal ceiling lights and bedside reading lights as well as good lighting and windows in the en-suites. We don't have blankets on our beds. We do have light cotton sheets, medium weight doonas with very light covers and a light cotton coverlet on the top. If you found these too heavy perhaps you could have removed the coverlet or the doona to be more comfortable. With the electric blanket and the very good and quiet panel heating in the rooms you would have been warm enough to do so. Perhaps you could have filled the kettle from the basin sink, with the little jug provided? I have to wonder why you would book a room costing $180 if you are then going to complain about the price. There are plenty of cheaper options nearby. I'm sorry that the complimentary breakfast provisions weren't to your liking. Perhaps you should have accepted the offer of cereal if the toast, tea & coffee weren't going to be enough for you? With standard portions of butter and jam to go with each piece of bread, the best quality bread we can get, you were quite welcome to ask for more. I am rarely more than 100metres from the property and can always be reached by phone. I can't speak for my mood that day as I have no idea when, or if, you stayed. Perhaps you arrived after 6pm without letting me know in advance as is mentioned on all booking confirmations, and caught me in the middle of dinner service at our cinema/restaurant? I am glad you managed to get away safely and if I had any idea who you are I would probably be happy to never accept a booking from you again anyway. Best of luck with your future bookings. Cheers "Joy"

We stayed in Tea Tree Bungalow. Very clean and quiet. Lovely and warm and very nice showers. Joy came over on our arrival and was very pleasant. We were asked if we needed anything when we arrived and I said no not expecting that there would not even be the basic of coffee or salt. Certainly know that I could have phoned and Joy would have brought it over, just mentioning for future visitors so they can request. Very cute little vege garden.

The Huon room with its full size bath is a treat. A very large bedroom that was well equipped and included comfortable arm chairs, sofa and a table. A well appointed common kitchen and lounge room complimented the package. Off street undercover parking is available.

What a lovely, cosy little B&B. And what a lovely welcoming host is Joy! Really enjoyed our stay here, only a short walk to the empire hotel for dinner, which was equally great. Only slight criticism I would have is.... I wish the breakfast was a little more than cereal and toast. Would definitely stay again, and would recommend to anyone.

What a hidden gem, this B&B is. Mt Lyell Anchorage is a beautifully and thoughtfully restored old mine managers residence dating back to 1896. The beautiful old fireplaces have been uncovered and timber stripped back showing all the old period features of years ago. As well as fireplaces in the bedrooms, lounge and bathroom off the master bedroom, all rooms have central heating and electric blankets. Lovely bathrobes await you and even the finest touches with lavender scattered over the central heating and fresh flowers add that really homely touch. The hostess couldn't have been more helpful and organised our booking for the Gordon River Cruise that leaves from nearby Strachan. The kitchen is well and truly equipped to cater for all your needs with plenty of breakfast provisions for all. It was so nice to come home after a day out exploring to relax in the lounge infront of the fire (wood well stocked up). A BBQ is also outside for a relaxed evening meal and the supermarket only a block away for extra provisions. We truly thought Mt Lyell Anchorage was our home away from home. Queenstown is the largest town on the Tasmanian West Coast and is home to the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Company and the West Coast Wilderness Railway. There are great walks to be had as well as trout fishing in the surrounding lakes. The township of Queenstown was originally developed to service the surrounding copper mines and is located in the Queen River Valley. We are glad we stayed here instead of at Strachan, as Strachan only has the wharf area where you catch the boats for the Gordon River Cruises, something that must be on your to do list when visiting this part of Tasmania. I would highly recommend this B&B for its charming atmosphere and friendliness of the hostess who couldn't do enough for you, and we will definately stay there again when next in the area.
