Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Steve and Karen host a truly unique B&B experience in an amazing National Trust home. Perched on top of the town Penghana House seems imposing but is warm and friendly inside. Lovely food, great service and excellent accommodation. We had a great couple of nights here to enjoy the region

Property's Favourite Review
A most beautiful, tastefully decorated, well equipped and maintained mansion, looking over the town and surrounding hills - plus the generous and friendly attitude of Steve and Karen, a combination that made my 2 night stay a delight. It is a first rate Mansion with unique atmosphere, excellent service, and friendly people - all set in a beautiful location.

The apartment is ideal for four. Spotlessly clean and lovely touches included a decanter of port! Steve gave an amusing tour and he & Karen were very readily available if needed (so friendly & helpful). We wholeheartedly recommend to others (just as we had been).

The title says it …. From the moment we arrived it felt special and different, we felt we were part of history. On arrival we were provided with a tour and some of the history of this incredible property. Steve and Karen were the prefect hosts, made us feel very welcome and special. The property has a licensed bar so we could sit outside and admire the view with a drink. Rooms very well appointed and very quiet and comfortable. We also had a small lounge and kitchen shared with two other rooms, great to relax with a glass of port of a cup of tea. The highlight of course being breakfast, home made yogurt and poached pears, home baked bread and a cooked breakfast for champions. Many thanks to Steve and Karen for an amazing stay.

Thank you for your words of praise. We love to hear that our guests feel welcome and special. That upstairs lounge sees many a glass of port and cups of tea as well as light snacks instead of going out for dinner. Again thank you for supporting small business on the West Coast.

Ross, We appreciate your comments. Thank you. Love to hear that our guests have a great sleep when they stay with us and that your found the kitchenette facility covered everything you needed. Yes Penghana certainly has a great story to share - now 125 years worth too. We aren't just somewhere to stay! We trust you enjoyed the permanent photo exhibition in the ballroom that recognises all the general managers who lived here and contributed to the 'fabric' of Queenstown and its history as well as showing the evolution of the house over this time.

Beautiful home and fantastic hosts who made this an unforgettable experience. The history of the house is well documented and interesting. We loved all the small details in the room which made us feel like we were in the roaring forties. The facilities in the house were second to none and we felt like we were the Lord and Lady of the Manor! Steve your breakfast was magnificent and I am going to make Karen’s Guilt Free Fruitcake as soon as I get home!

An amazing trip - I was here for a conference, but the West Coast, Queenstown and Penghana B & B made this feel like a holiday. Karen is an amazing host - from the cosy bedsheets and fruitcake to the well-stocked wine cellar and rooms to explore (thanks for the tour, Karen!). I cannot recommend highly enough - stay here, you will not be disappointed!

Firstly, Karen's meticulous eye to detail is second to none. From her welcome at the door to the next morning's amazing breakfast this lovely lady and Steve host a superb Bed & Breakfast. (Speaking of breakfast, you must try her bircher muesli. And Steve's bread.) Authentic period decor, wonderful linen and beds, lovely thoughtful touches throughout; there is too much to mention individually. Every industry award is well deserved. The best part though is how welcome and comfortable Karen made us feel. We loved every minute of our stay. Thank you!

When we first come into Queenstown, Penghana stood out high on a beautiful hill. It did not disappoint. As soon as we entered the front door, we were made very welcome. The old mansion was beautifully kept, with history on the walls, old style furniture and a feel of going back in time. We stayed in the Owen Suit which had a great view of Queenstown, nicely laid out antique furniture and a lovely decanter of Port. Steven & Karen went beyond our expectations, even chauffeuring us into town for dinner and picking us up. We what else can l say! You will just have to find out when you get here.

We literally felt transported back in time to when the mansion was first built. Steve and Karen were the perfect hosts with Steve taking on the role of what could only be described as the most attentive butler! The attention to detail was amazing. Well done both. We will be back again. The work that they have put in to create this experience is definitely well worth taking the time to stay.
