A most beautiful, tastefully decorated, well equipped and maintained mansion, looking over the town and surrounding hills - plus the generous and friendly attitude of Steve and Karen, a combination that made my 2 night stay a delight.
It is a first rate Mansion with unique atmosphere, excellent service, and friendly people - all set in a beautiful location.

This is the best place to stay in Queenstown, if you want to appreciate the heritage and history of the town. It is a heritage mansion that played a central role in the town's development, now being run as an extremely comfortable and hospitable B&B. The hosts are warm and engaging and the location on a hilltop gives a great view of the town. Breakfast was individually cooked and delicious. We really enjoyed our stay in Queenstown, and a large part of it was this excellent B&B.

We stayed for two nights in this beautiful home. It was clear to us that our hosts loved this property and their pride in it was shown in every detail of the exquisite furnishings. When we arrived our host took the trouble to give a wonderful potted history of the house and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are large and beautifully furnished. Breakfast showcased local produce and was delicious. It was an absolute joy to stay here.

From the moment I made the initial booking with Steve and Karen I knew this was going to be a special place to stay.
On arrival we were given a short guided history of the residence as we were shown to our room, which had all the little added extras you would hope to have but not always given. Karen and Steve go the full nine yards offering home baked fruit cake to enjoy with a tea or coffee in the sitting room. A complementary sherry/Port was enjoyed in the evening while sharing a conversation with Karen prior to adjourning to our delightful suite. Bed linens were white crisp and very comfortable. We could not fault a thing. Steve booked out dinner reservation at the local pub and picked us up when we were finished. In the morning we enjoyed a full silver service breakfast cooked by Steve and time to suite our activity for the day. We had booked the half day heritage train trip, Steve let us keep our car parked at the residence until our return when he picked us up after the trip, even though we weren’t staying there that evening. Nothing was too much trouble. This couple know the meaning of customer service and obviously love what they do.
Thank you both for a lovely experience. Some wonderful childhood memories were evoked when walking through the front door of Penghana!

This is a must stay for anyone visiting the west coast of Tasmania. The location is stunning with great views over the town. Nothing is a trouble to the owners who are willing to take you to a restaurant and then pick you up. Breakfast is a real treat. Home made jams along with such a variety of cooked choices that it is hard to make a decision. We had such an enjoyable stay that it was hard to leave.

I had 4 nights in Penghana B&B's self contained studio and it was a really good experience. Allowed me to self-cater while having the very genteel public rooms of the grand house still available; a welcoming 'signature' fruit cake in the room and a tour of the main rooms of the house made me instantly welcomed. My hosts were very informative about the town and the house (the original mine managers residence, atop a small peak overlooking the town). Extremenly attractively priced for what you get.

Driving up the long driveway from the road, Penghana House stood stately before our eyes. It was a sight to behold. Karen warmly welcomed us at the front door and after explaining a few tips and tricks for our 2-night stay, she showed us to our beautiful suite which consisted of 2 queen beds, a separate lounge, and a bathroom/toilet. There was everything and more that you could ever want for. Steve helped with our suitcases then met us in the cosy little bar for a lovely glass of Tasmanian Pinot Noir and a good chat. Steve drove us to dinner at a local Thai restaurant and picked us up again to bring us back to the house.
The breakfast the next day was 5 stars with everything you could imagine. It was nice to meet and chat with the other guests staying in the house, whilst enjoying the breakfast cooked by Steve.
Upon our departure, Karen gave us a little gift of lollies and disposable toilet set covers for our journey onward, which was a thoughtful touch.
Thank you for having us.
John and Shona

This two story mansion dates from the 1890´s and was the home of the general managers of the Mt Lyell Mining&Railway Co.Ltd.and it’s subsequent appellations. In the hall is a grand photo portrait of Mr Sticht ,an American who was GM for about 30 years and who introduced pyritic smelting amid much scepticism and thereby ensured the profitabilty of the company in the early 20 th century. His successor,Mr RM Murray, came to Mt Lyell in 1900.His career was a mirror of the way mining changed at Mt Lyell. He died in the house in 1945.
Why the history lesson?Because the house is part of the saga of west coast mining, and I believe knowing something of this history will greatly enhance one’s stay.I recommend reading an early Geoffrey Bainey title,The Peaks of Lyell,to pique one’s interest. The house is hugely atmospheric, aided in this by the Victorian and Edwardian decor.
Our room ,the Owen Room, was of a good size with modern heating, shower and wc.The bed was superbly comfortable. The view over Queenstown and of the peaks beyond,is stupendous from this room.
There is a commodious common room and an adjoining room which has basic cooking facilities.
Breakfasts are terrific,an abundance of choice of the highest quality, cooked cheerfully by Steve.
The house is a ten minute walk down a hill through revegetation and across the Queen river to near the train station, whose cafe is excellent.
The resident caretaker managers (I believe the house is owned by the Tas.government or insrumentality thereof)Steve and Karen, are most pleasant people and make every effort to ensure a great stay. There were several thoughtful small gestures they made which were not essential but well noticed and appreciated by us.Steve and Karen have been here for 6 or 7 years and had successful professional lives in other fields before, and most certainly run it very well.
This is a unique accomodation.I cannot recommend it too highly,it was the highlight of our first but I hope not last visit to Tasmania.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive overview of your stay at Penghana and thank you for your compliments. Just a couple of corrections - we are in our 9th year here and what guests see, isn't us just as 'caretakers' of this business. We purchased the business back in 2015 and have styled and built it to what it is today. Yes the property is owned by National Trust Tasmania. We have a commercial lease to operate Penghana as a B&B business. We pay all outgoings as well as rent to NTT with the Landlord being responsible for maintaining the heritage value and upkeep of the structure. This property has been a commercial operation now for 28 years. We are it's 4th owners and now hold the longest ownership record. Guests who are interested not only in the house's history but that of Queenstown and it dominant reputation globally as a source for copper and gold, can also enjoy the Exhibition we, in collaboration with NTT, brought together to celebrate the house's 125th anniversary in 2023. The originalballroom now houses a permanent photographic display to illustrate the house's evolution but most importantly the purpose was to honour all the 11 General Managers and their families who resided here over a 99 year period. Yes we have gathered some amazing stories from remaining families/family members and uncovered pieces of memorbilia to keep the history alive and give accuracy. It is titled "The hands that shaped the bannisters" . We are proud of our achievements now with 2 consecutive years of being included inTripadvisor's top 1% of B&B's globally and rated in Ausralia's top 10 B&B's. (2023 at No. 8 and 2024 at No. 7 as well as in the top 25 for the South Pacific Region).

We love staying in old places with significant history and character. Penghana ticked all the boxes with the bonus of charming and helpful hosts who went out of their way to welcome us and treat us like the royalty that reputedly had stayed there before us. Breakfasts were country house style with everything matched to individual tastes. The chauffeur service offered to nearby restaurants was unexpected but very welcome. Overall a great experience and well done Steve and Karen

Wow. The beauty & heritage of the house was only surpassed by the sensational hosts Karen & Steve.
You are welcome and encouraged to immerse yourself in the various rooms, ports, billards table and more, socking up the heritage.
Room was very comfortable, home made fruit cake waiting, and simply the best host service I enjoyed over 5 weeks of travelling Tassie.
Absolute no-brainer to recommend. I will return for a longer stay
