What an absolute gem! I could not believe my eyes when I stepped into this chic little hotel, it would be quite at home in any capital city CBD. The excellent service began when I rang to make my booking. This continued throughout our stay, from check in, to dinner, to check out. The hotel is in a quiet spot, with the Aqua Studio overlooking the wharf with a magnificent view out to the Flinders Ranges. The rooms were beautifully appointed, a very comfortable bed, gorgeous bathroom and complimentary water. The rooms are also only accessible from the inside, which would provide a good sense of security for those travelling solo. The food is outstanding . My son and I shared the Prawn and Salmon Chirashizushi, which is a DIY sushi which was fun, fresh and delicious. We then both enjoyed the Deep Sea Delicacy, which was fresh perch -yum!. The staff in the restaurant were also very professional, but with that country hospitality touch. They also wore very smart, unique uniforms. I have been fortunate to stay in a variety of hotels and honestly could not fault The Ellen .

Stumbled across this place while looking for somewhere to eat in Port Pirie and wow are we glad we did.
Dined in the restaurant having the oysters which we plumb and fresh ++ Brikset and steak which we're delicious and followed up with the lemon meringue and sticky date - both amazing.
Darryl the owner was working the restaurant and extremely friendly and helped made the night extra fun and enjoyable with his attention to details and welcoming and friendly nature.
Will definitely stay at this hotel next time we are in Pirie.

Lovely well appointed motel in a good location. Staff were friendly and accommodating.
Rpom Windows are double glazed to eliminate wharf noise and can't be opened so room was little stuffy. Not a lot of off street parking.

The Ellen Hotel is an oasis within Port Pirie. The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, and the shower/bathroom is luxury. My only minor complaint is that the room is dark and could do with some extra lighting if someone was trying to work in the room. New owners took over in late 2022 and the service is professional and helpful.

All the reviews i have read here it actually really surprised me as im not thinking the same!
Managed to check in at 12 as our room was ready, the room was spacious and clean but very dark. So lights were on continusly.
Netflix in the room was a nice idea, just log into our accout and watch.
Disappointed that the restaurant was closed, was hoping to eat here rather than pub food again! And the bar was closed too, would have been nice to sit in the area with a glass of wine before bed
Check out, we wanted coffee (even though tea/coffee making facilities were available in the room) So couldnt even get a good coffee from the restaurant area.
So yes, a bit of a let down.....

Hi Lou, Thank you for your review. We are sorry that the restaurant was closed. We find it a bit unfair that you gave us a 2 because of the restaurant being closed. With all due respect when the government decide to reduce our capacity to only 25%, we could not survive. Our chef started at another type of business during the shut down and unfortunately finding a chef in a country town is a lot harder than finding a chef in the city. Considering our check in time is 2pm and you were given access to your room at 12pm, it is very unfair that because of one small item as the restaurant being closed when there are 3 close by (one right across the road being Cafe Primo, and 2 others being a 2 minute walk away) and a few other restaurants, not pubs, restaurant within a 5 minute drive of the hotel. There is plenty that Port Pirie has to offer.

After 3 nights of camping in the Flinders Ranges we spent a night in the Luxe Suite. Everything about The Ellen was outstanding. The room was extremely comfortable, with a luxurious shower. The service in the hotel was very friendly and helpful. The biggest highlight for me was the meal, it was exceptional. Will certainly be returning.

I had fried eggs and bacon on sourdough. On arrival my bacon was beef jerky, and the eggs like a frisby, cold and rubbery. The sourdough toast like a slab of concrete. My wife’s meal was the same, thanks very much to the apprentice working unsupervised

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback following your less than satisfactory experience while dining with us recently. Naturally, we are always disappointed to receive negative based feedback, but we know that it comes with the industry. We always take feedback on board in our endeavours to continue to provide an (predominantly) positive experience to our diners. Like most restaurants, we would love for our "unhappy" diners to raise issues with us on the day/night so that we can attempt to alter their story from a negative to a positive. We know we get it wrong sometimes, and for that we will always say sorry. The young apprentice was working and cooking in the kitchen alone (as she has done many times, predominantly to rave reviews), yet there was relevant "supervision" in accordance with occupational laws that are in place. As already mentioned, we do take feedback on board, we treat is seriously and your feedback will be discussed with our kitchen staff and they will, as they do each and every day, give their all in an effort to get better and make things better - certainly better than the experience you endured. Beautifully and uniquely decorated, this hotel is a perfectly located beacon of luxury in Port Pirie. The professional yet personable staff are welcoming and helpful. There is a restaurant conveniently located within the hotel, or you’re just a minute’s walk away from various dining and retail outlets. I wish every town I visit had an Ellen Hotel!

A lot must have changed in one week at the restaurant as last weeks meal was tasty and fresh for both me and my wife didn’t have much to complain out as we were both regulars at this restaurant. In tasting the food you instantly could tell the tasteless under seasoned steak, not cooked to my liking, my wife’s lamb Was nice but along with the deb favoured mash potato (tasted like it was out of a packet) was not a very pleasant meal put that together with half smashed potatoes that tasted old and more like mash with my steak, was all round a very unpleasant experience for us. Like I said this place was becoming a go to for us to have a meal and now from this bad experience we will be taking our business else where it seems to be going downhill in one week I don’t understand why but it wasn’t the same as it has been in the past 4 months. The service from the bar staff was great it is a shame that the food doesn’t match.
Furthermore recommend this restaurant for the drinks only not for a horrible meal that is up for offer I feel sorry for the bar staff as I was not the only one to complain that night and having to deal with the poor food coming from the kitchen.

Naturally, we are disappointed to receive this type of feedback, but we do take all feedback on board in our endeavours to continue to provide an (overwhelmingly) positive experience to our diners. Like most restaurants, we would prefer our diners to raise issues with us on the day/night so that we can attempt to make things right so that people don't have to leave with a negative story to tell. We know we get it wrong sometimes, and for that we apologise. This is particularly disappointing having only yesterday received our award from the "Restaurant Guru" which is awarded based on feedback from diners. It's unfortunate that one bad experience (after quite a few positive ones based on the feedback) means that we have gone from the "go to" place to taking business elsewhere without providing us with an additional opportunity to make things right, but understand that is a personal choice. As already mentioned, we do take feedback on board, we treat is seriously and your feedback will be discussed with our kitchen staff and they will, as they do each and every day, give their all in an effort to get better and make things better - certainly better than the experience you endured.
