My partner & I & 2 small dogs stayed 2 nights while driving down the coast. We chose this property mainly because they allow pets. Wow...were we very pleasantly surprised at how lovely this property was. We had a cabin (one of four) that was well equipped, very comfortable & clean with spectacular views of rainforest & ocean. The main house which also has accommodation is magnificent with a beautiful indoor swimming pool which is available to all guests, pool table/games room, outdoor BBQ area & a fire pit for cooler months. The owners of the property live onsite & are very friendly & helpful.
This property was a very good find & we will certainly be returning next time we drive down the coast again from Cairns. Great property & great value for money.

We stayed in the honeymoon suite, it was 3 times as big as any room you'd want. Large bath and shower, plus a spa bath outside on the deck, to enjoy sunset spa and wine.

Our host Peter was fantastic, super helpful and couldn't have done more for us.

Great views and close to a shopping centre, including the suggested locals pub Banjo's, with great food and cocktails.

Close to coral sea resort and marina for sailing trips and jetski tours, less than 5 mins from town.

Ask Peter to tell you the backstory of the main house 😉 it contains love, lust, betrayal and great wealth, or make up your own story of how this house kickstarted Frank Walker with National Tiles, as it has floor to ceiling tiles.

Superior value.

We loved our stay at this retreat it's the perfect place to isolate at this present time. The views are breathtaking and the facilities are just right and Pete really looked after us, nothing was a problem and he was kind enough to drive us from the shopping centre.

The pool, lounge and deck area were perfect for relaxing and looking at the ocean. This was the perfect getaway for us and we will be back.

Booked for 4 days. On arrival was informed no access to the main house, deck (with views) pool etc. When I pointed out the hotel listing states pool etc I was arrogantly told "no you are mistaken". When I demonstrated the site the owner said "if you look at the room you picked there is no photo of the pool in the room". It turns out the main house was booked out to one group of travellers and they requested no other guests have access.

The room was ok, basic...air con not working, the managers general suggestion was turn it on and off, when I pointed out this was still not working, the manager pretty was like oh well and started ignoring us.
Finally we had a cab service booked a few hours after check out, I had initially assumed as the guest house services were advertised we would hang by the pool and leave the bags at reception, but no we were instructed to leave at checkout exactly.

The owner was nice till he wasn't and then he was just downright petty and uninterested in offering what was listed on the site or resolving problems.

Pete was a champ. Very friendly, funny & even offered to take our photos. This hidden gem is perfect for those couples wanting to get away from the kids for a night or two or just to spend quality time together. We can’t believe we weren’t aware of this place whilst living in Airlie a year ago. The view is also stunning.

Where do I start??
My partner and I stayed in Airlie Beach for 3 nights, so with only having this short amount of time, the accommodation was an important part of our stay! We were really excited to arrive, as we had communicated with Peter before our stay. He seemed very friendly and helpful, and offered to book some trips for us.
When we arrived, the reception area was right next to the inside pool area. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable stripping down to swimwear and going for a swim right in front of where he sits at his desk??
We were then shown to our villa, this is where it hit us. It was a SHARED villa. We were given a tiny bedroom with no privacy in a four bedroom villa shared with three other couples. And this is meant to be a retreat? We and some of the other couples in the villa agreed that the wording on his advertisements are completely misleading and did not realise we would be sharing this villa with other guests! DONT BE FOOLED!
The bedroom consisted of tiny floor space, a shower inside the room (so there is no privacy to shower if you wanted it), a TV on the bedside table, only a few inches from where your head would lie on the bed and a shared balcony. This place just has no sense of privacy what so ever. Then we found our bedroom didn’t even have a working lock. So first we find out we are sharing a villa, then find out we can't lock our bedroom!!
We decided that we didn't want to stay in this villa, as we had such high expectations and it had basically ruined our whole first day as we were so confused by the whole situation that we decided to go and tell Pete how we felt. We explained that the wording online needs to be much clearer and that we didn't feel comfortable staying in a shared villa. We may as well have been staying in a posh hostel. He was not at all welcoming to our comments and when i proceeded to say that we will not be staying here anymore (i told him to keep our first night’s stay charge but would not expect him to charge me for the next two nights as he can re-sell the room) he said he would have to speak to 'the owner' and that he cannot authorise a refund of the remaining charges. Speak to the owner??? I thought he was the owner! Funny how this changed as soon as a complaint arises. He spoke to one of the other couples in the villa and when they also said they did not realise it was shared but they were going to stay anyway he told them that we 'are just typical English and expect too much'. It's not like we haven't travelled from the other side of the world so having high expectations is completely acceptable don't you think?? When we left, i sent him an email confirming we had left and to speak to the 'owner' about our concerns. Still to this day i have not received a response, and the full 3 nights charge was taken from my card. Completely and utterly disappointed. Be careful when booking this place - you might not get what you expect.....

A few other points to consider:
-The villas are situated on a very steep bank. We are a young couple and even we would not consider walking up and down this bank every day.
- The Wi-Fi is only situated in the main building (up the bank at the top of the hill) so no Wi-Fi is available in the SHARED villas.
- When using the toilet, the only ventilation is a small window, so be careful your housemates aren't on the shared balcony at this point!!
- Our window of our bed was in full view of anybody outside using the shared sun deck.
- I would definitely consider hiring a car if you decide to stay here, it would not be worth the constant taxi fares.
- You can hear each other’s conversations while you’re in your own bedroom.
- Living room uncomfortable, very cheap sofa type beds would be the best way to describe the 'sofas'. Only two small 'sofas' in front of the TV so you would feel confined to your bedroom every night.
- Kitchen seemed cheap and not much space for storing food considering the amount of people living in a villa.

Only good thing was the view!!!

Hi Emily. I'm sorry to hear that your stay was not up to your expectations. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional service and at this time it appears our style of accommodation is not the correct fit for your visit. The Villas and the shared facilities (Kitchen, Living area and main deck) are all explained as being shared within the description of each room on our Booking.com web page. I'm sorry you have not picked up on that when you have made your booking. Not many other hotels provide full kitchen & BBQ facilities for under $100 p.n. Perhaps you would enjoy our King "Honeymoon Suite" more at only $50 extra p.n. Call me next time and I'll see what we can do for you. As for the lock problem, House Keeping hadn't noticed that someone had damaged the lock. Once you made me aware of it I replaced the lock with a new one within half an hour. I felt that issue was dealt with the best way possible as we take room security very seriously. Hope to hear from you again one day. Take care. Pete & Jules

The road upto the Retreat is not sign posted but directions from the hosts eventually pointed us the right way. On arrival it looks just like a private household, but we were quickly greeted by Peter & Jules and made welcome. A quick tour of the house and off to our spacious, comfortable room. The essence of the Retreat is that you are treated as family guests in their house but the twist is you provide your own food & drink and do the cooking. However, this works well because you interact and socialise with the other guests while prepping & enjoying your meal. Jules is also a great cook and tops up with some tasty treats. Peter has an excellent BBQ on the veranda outside the kitchen which eases the cooking problems and choices. The Retreats location, nestled in the rainforest half way up the mountain, with amazing views is definitely its big attraction. If you're looking for regular hotel facilities then this is not the spot. But if it's a stay that's a little different but packed with fun, charm and chat then this is the place. They even grow their own mangoes & avocados!!!!

We were hoping for a romantic getaway. Instead, we found ourselves parking on rocky flat on the side of a hill, sleeping in a cheap and uncomfortable bed, looking in to others people's windows, squeezing between the shower door and the vanity (it doesn't open completely). The villas are shared with three other people/couples, which is fine, but doesn't add any privacy. From the room you can hear footsteps and hear voices. In the villa we stayed in, you could see two rooms in the villa below - luckily like us, they chose to close all the curtains - but then where is the view?? Wifi is only accessible in the main centre, where the hotel owner has perched himself in front of the pool (very uncomfortable if you're trying to have a swim!). Not totally unhappy but at the same time, not really happy either. We are looking into other places for next time.

The room we had was in a four bedroom house (villa?). The room was so small. Double bed very hard. Shower in room and couldn't open door fully. Nice ocean view from balcony but it is shared with others. A partition between rooms would have been better for privacy. Above rainforest so no shade.
Share lounge and kitchen. Luckily everyone went to their rooms and didn't party. Left after one night. Overpriced.

Hi Shell . I'm sorry to hear that your stay was disappointing. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional service and at this time it appears our style of accommodation is not the correct fit for your visit. Our style of accommodation really doesn't suit Overnight Aussies. Yes, the Villa Rooms also have the Free added Benefit of the shared facilities (Kitchen, Living area and main deck with BBQ) and are all explained as being shared within the description of each room on our Booking.com web page. Not many other hotels provide full kitchen & BBQ facilities for under $100 p.n. Perhaps our King room would best suit any future stay and at only $50 more p.n. is extremely good value. Have a look at it on our web pages. Hear from you soon. Pete & Jules
