Detailed Reviews
My husband stayed at the Reef Retreat for 4 nights (April 2022) for our honeymoon. The room was clean and had everything we needed (small kitchenette with cutlery, microwave, etc etc…) the bed was VERY comfy, the room air conditioned with a fan too. The retreat facilities were lovely (a pool & spa).
The customer service was polite (but nothing special), all up for the cost it was good value. The location is very good.
I would recommend staying here :)

We stayed here for 5 nights & it was our first time in Palm Cove. We loved everything about our stay! Before our stay the hotel booked our transfers with ease. The rooms are huge and had everything we needed. The outside kitchenette was really appreciated as eating out in Palm Cove, we found, was really expensive so we cooked most days. The heated outdoor spa was so nice to enjoy after being out all day. The bed was also so comfortable and the hotel is only steps away from the beach & cafes. We will always stay here from now on. Excellent value for money, provided everything we needed with great service & location.

We stayed in room 6 on first floor, room was very clean and has privacy, . It was EXELENT service! For 10 days they cleaned twice! When we arrived our luggage girl took to our room. Anything what we need was given more than we need, and we always could find somebody to ask. Utensils, like saucepan and frypans was right size for 2 people. Just have in mind, that storage there small, (for as was enough), so don't take a lot of clothes and these buildings has steep stairs, so who has problems to climb up the stairs I advise take ground floor (just have in mind that ground floor has less privacy. PS We couldn't nominate somebody, because ALL STAFF was EXELENT.
Thank you

The reef retreat is in a great location just off the waterfront and was nice and sheltered from the constant on-shore wind. The apartment was also clean.
On the down side the accommodation was very basic and quite dated, definitely not worthy of 4 stars as listed - more like a basic Airbnb. The pool area was ok but a bit underwhelming. The worst part though was the attitude of the gentleman on reception. He was extremely rude, literally everything seemed to be too much bother. His grumpy offhand manner and eye rolling were unpleasant and unnecessary. The lady staff member was great though!

This place is NOT a retreat, how they could book the rooms next to the construction sites is beyond me and downright greedy! We were woken every morning at 6.30am to the lovely sounds of concrete sanders and God knows what other power tools were being used right next to our window, not to mention the burnouts in the street and foul language as the site workers turned up generally around 6.15am. The pool is filthy and swim in there at your own peril. The guy behind the desk is totally negative and unhelpful when we tried to change rooms due to the unsuitability of the 43 dangerous stairs we had to climb to get to our room, my hubby has a heart condition and I have a dodgy ankle and that was before the noise factor of the construction site set in. We tried to enquire about booking a Fitzroy Island trip with him and his first rude response at us was "you won't get transfers from here!" Needless to say we didn't book through them and went through another booking place that were more than helpful. We got to the stage that we totally avoided the front office as it seemed like we would get snapped at if we needed any help. Seems like the owners of this place are over it. At no time did we see any Covid cleaning take place, no one cleaned any common areas, handrails etc during our entire stay. If you want a peaceful, friendly place to stay avoid this place at all costs.

Hello Nikki We have already responded to your review on Google and your comments on Facebook which covers most of the issues raised by you in your TripAdvisor review and is included at the end of this response. In reply to the additional comments made in this TripAdvisor review, we provide the following: The Reef Retreat is certified as having COVID clean procedures in place and these are practiced daily. The pool is cleaned daily, as are the pool surrounds, the pool, loungers, the pathways, the BBQ and the BBQ area. The stairs and landings are also swept daily. Because we are located in a grove of tall Melaleuca trees, leaves often do fall throughout the day, especially when it is windy or raining which was the case during your stay. Even if we dedicated a person to collecting leaves 24 hours a day it would not be possible to catch them all. Informing you that the Fitzroy Island day trip no longer provides a pick-up service from Palm Cove or that the Bluewater Tavern no longer has a shuttle service to take guests to and from the tavern to Palm Cove is not being negative –it is providing you with accurate information. One-bedroom units at The Reef Retreat may be on the first second and third floor and all rooms at The Reef Retreat are accessed via stairs. We do ask that if a particular floor is preferred or required that you make this known at the time of booking as this gives the best chance of your request being able to be accommodated. It is not always possible to accommodate requests when we only learn of them on or after your arrival, especially when we are heavily booked, as was the case during your stay. We would have been very happy to move you to another room if one had been available. You did not mention any special needs, health issues or particular floor preferences when you made your booking. The following information has already been provided to you in response to your Google review and Facebook posts and messages - - "We acknowledge that there are two building sites close to the Reef Retreat, one at the rear and one at the front. Information regarding the building work and potential for noise to be generated are posted on the web site used to make your booking. The information is designed to be clearly visible to potential guests before they finalize their booking. It is not “hidden”, as you have suggested. Both building sites are approved for work by Cairns Regional Council from 6.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. We have no control over this. You booked an eight-night stay with us. As you arrived after hours, we did not see you until the morning after you arrived. You asked if you could move from the room allocated to another room as you did not wish to be on the third floor, because you did not wish to climb the stairs. You were advised at the time that this was not possible as there were no other rooms available for the dates of your stay. You did not mention the building works as a problem at this time. On the 7th day of your stay, you posted various messages on Facebook expressing your unhappiness with the accommodation due to noise made from the building works. It is regrettable that you waited until the day before you were due to depart to make this known. As previously advised, there is no need to stay in accommodation that you do not like or that does not meet your requirements. You could have come at any time to cancel your booking and relocate to a property that better met your needs. We may even have been in a position to assist with sourcing alternative accommodation for you. We are in regular contact with the foreman of the building site to ensure that wherever possible noise is kept to a minimum and that tradespeople are mindful that there is an accommodation complex next door. We did check with the site manager and the tradespeople working on the site during your stay. Their response is that much of the foul language that you mention was initiated by yourselves. Other guests staying in rooms nearby to yours made complaints about the amount of noise generated by you returning to your room late at night and the language that was used by you. You have also accused us of deleting your comments and posts on Facebook, which is incorrect. Everything that you posted remains in place, together with our responses".

We were disappointed by the closed in feeling of our room. We had booked a 10 day stay here expecting to have a retreat with a beautiful view as represented in the website photos. Instead our space faced directly onto a bedroom of the next door resort and the dark timber louvre doors could be closed for privacy but made it feel shut-in & dark. We were unable to upgrade because of unavailability. I overheard a couple of other guests conversing about how they enjoyed their rooms so this was evidently just a personal let down for us in our particular apartment.
Jo & Jim are not gushy hosts but were helpful, particularly when asked about local sites. Receptionist Jerry was exceptional, she was warm and hospitable and the maintenance worker was also helpful.
We did however feel that when comments were made to the manager about maintenance issues (especially not hot water if the guests above had used it up) we were met with a tone of defence rather than a simple apology for the inconvenience. While the issues were addressed, after several comments on the same ongoing issue we became reluctant to make further mention because the manner in which we were met became more of a concern for us than the actual problems.
During our stay we had the beds and towels changed but no floor or bathroom cleaning within the 10 day frame. On request the floors were mopped but personally I expected that general cleaning (especially gritty floors) would be standard room service for a 10 day stay.

Thanks for your comments. We are sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. You booked a Jetstar package that included a stay in a standard spa suite. The description of the standard spa suites is as follows: “Standard spa suites do not have views of the pool or gardens and look out onto another building”. We realise that this was not what you wanted but we were unable to move you to another room as we had no other rooms available for the dates of your stay. If we could have offered you a complimentary upgrade to another room type we would have done so. Pool and garden views are available from studio suites, one-bedroom suites and superior spa suites, so it would probably have been better if you had of booked one of these room types. We acknowledge that there were some issues with hot water in the kitchen during your stay. We have repeatedly apologised for this and we did everything possible to get these issues resolved as quickly as we could. The Reef Retreat is self-catering, self-contained accommodation and as such daily room servicing is not included in the room rate. Rooms are serviced mid-way through 5 days stay and the service consists of fresh bedroom and bathroom linen, emptying of rubbish and a general tidy-up. If a higher level of servicing is required then it is available but at a small additional cost. Our records show that your room was serviced a minimum of twice during your stay and additional bathroom linen was supplied to you when requested.

We recently spent 3 relaxing weeks at this lovely resort. The property and gardens are extremely well maintained and the staff very welcoming, giving the resort a homely feel. Although there is some construction work taking place nearby the resort, the lush gardens throughout the resort make you feel like you're in a tropical oasis. Our room was beautiful and very well appointed. We stayed in a superior spa suite and didn't want for anything during our lengthy stay. The room was serviced every fourth day which is over and above the service we've experienced at other hotels and resorts. Jim and Joanne are consummate hosts and all staff are friendly and professional- Allan was genuinely keen to ensure that we knew about the area and the best places to visit. We would thoroughly recommend this resort to couples, families and groups. There is a great barbeque area near the lovely pool, with ample seating to accommodate social get-togethers - or if you want to eat out the resort is right nearby the 'restaurant strip on the beachfront. Thank you Reef Retreat for a great holiday.

Advertised as a 4 star but would struggle to hit a 3. Location is good enough but the on site ground maintenance and room decoration desperately needs attention. As a budget accommodation it’s fine but not the 4 star as advertised. Would recommend looking at the hotels on the sea front as Palm cove is quite lovely.

This was my first visit to Cairns and I really enjoyed Palm Cove and the beachfront restaurants and café’s. The Reef Retreat has everything, a great pool setting amongst trees and gardens and sheltered from any wind and is value for money. My room was clean and had all that I needed and was serviced during my stay. Palm Cove is a good base to explore the region as it is away from the main centre of Cairns. Hotel Reception has a tour desk and they were helpful with local knowledge of what is operating and what is not in terms of tours and opportunities. Businesses seem to be booming with lots of people in town but they also seem to be struggling to get staff. Difficult to get a hire car and it was best to book a restaurant for dinner at night to be sure you got a table.

Loved it here. A little gem, hidden round the corner in its own rainforest grounds.
We had a fab ground floor studio room which had an open plan relaxed vibe, and all amenities needed to be self sufficient.
Even though we were near the pool and main path, we felt secluded on our little terrace.
Everything was tastefully decorated and well thought out - really liked the swivel tv mount which can follow you around the room!
1 min walk, and the beach and ocean beckons. I found a bench nearby and enjoyed watching the world go by.
The lovely palm tree lined ‘high street’ is compact, packed with eateries and little shops - plenty to keep you busy as you wander up and down.
A walk to the end of the street brings you to a lovely pier/jetty.
If we’re lucky enough to come back to palm cove, would defo stay here again.
