I stayed here with my husband and young baby in early Feb 2010. We stayed in a one bedroom ocean front room for $175/night.

The room was dirty with ants all over the kitchen bench, something which were particularly sensitive to given that we have a very young baby which we didn't want to disease with ants! The paint was peeling off the ducted airconditioning vents, falling on to the carpet and the bed, and then my baby was eating it off the floor. The spa was built in with the shower and you practically needed a ladder to get in and out of it. It was a negligence action waiting to happen because the bath mat provided was simply a towel and slippery when exiting the shower. The coffee table had a big burn mark on it. The water jug provided was all stained with something yellow, and there was no way I would have drunk water out of it. The bathroom (and the whole unit) wasn't very clean, and there was mould and rust in the bathroom. The towels provided were wafer thin and there were only 2 provided, no toiletries, and a tiny sachet of dishwashing liquid.

I also didn't believe that the bed was actually a queen size bed, it was more of a double size. We got very little sleep and even my husband woke up and said 'let's go home, I don't want to stay here another night'.

The final straw was when we discovered blood stains on the curtains ... how revolting is that.

I went and complained to management and they offered me another room. It also didn't seem very clean to me (particularly with a baby crawling around all over the floor) although the bed was bigger. The whole complex seemed to be under-maintained and needed a good pest spray, there were ants and bugs everyone on the exterior.

On the positive side (not that there were many), the pool is quite nice and the location is good across the road from the beach (over the road).

We were given a refund for our second night and came home. It ruined my husband's birthday weekend. The management were a little indifferent and said that this was the first time they had a complaint, and didn't seem interested in coming up to the room so that I could show them the blood stain (wouldn't this be something that horrified you as a hotel manager?), the ants or the paint peeling off the roof into my baby's mouth or my mouth as I was sleeping.

I would never stay here again, particularly for the price which is about the same as a 4.5 star hotel.

We looked at a room at Elements at Coolum and for about the same price, it was much much much nicer and we would choose to stay here on returning to Coolum.

Our recent stayin room 48 at the Beach Retreat left us grossly dissapointed.
The following are the reasons.
1.the room smelt strongly of chlorine on arrival.
2.Cobwebs and small spiders in the corners of the ceiling and walls in the living area ,numerous.
3. One third of a toilet roll with no backup.
4. no tissues, toiletries, face washer.A spa is available with no accompanying bath salts or foam!?.
4. Dirty door archetraves and bathroom window dirty.
5. Walls in bedroom badly marked.
5. extra towells required at $3 each as existing were very thin.
For a 4 star resort at $175:00 per night, as a seasoned traveller having stayed in this facility approximately 10 times we believe the standard has fallen and the body corporate should be made aware of the dissatisfaction by ourselves and the people we visited while staying in the resort.
For a propety with this location and outlook investors beware of a diminnishing return if the current managers do not improve the service and facility.

The room is filthy. Dirty bedding. See pictures. Dirty old linen. No view as per pictures. Looking out at a concrete wall. The worst thing is how dirty and old everything is. Feet stick to the floor it’s so dirty. Not to standard. I’ve seen better back packers. This is not worth the price. The whole place is about money. You even have to pay $5 for a pool towel. It is also very road noisy. Internet is limited use, and a poor quality connection. Be warned that a $200 demand on arrival will be made in case you lose the key. Truly dissatisfied customers.

Response from BeachRetreatCoolum, Manager at The Beach Retreat Coolum
Responded 16 July 2018
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are very sorry that you did not enjoy your time at The Beach Retreat Coolum. The linen in our rooms is supplied and laundered by a commercial laundry, and we have not had any other reports or concerns with the quality or cleanliness of the linen supplied by this professional company. Every unit is individually owned and we always encourage the owners to update the units. The carpets and flooring are cleaned constantly and in conjunction with our owners we are currently replacing the carpets in units. We work very hard at maintaining a level of cleanliness and our staff are trained to rectify any maintenance issue as soon as possible and this procedure will be revisited. We do have a number of styles of accommodation with varying views and are priced accordingly. Our position is directly opposite the beach and we endeavor to keep our tariffs very reasonable. Feedback from our guests has been that they would prefer to keep the costs down by not including items such as beach towels and daily services. The beach towel cost is entirely to cover the cost of the laundering of the towel and is for the entire stay, whether that be one night or 7 nights. The $200 security deposit for the key is fully refunded on checkout when the key is handed back (if you pay by cash) and this is clearly stated on all of the websites under "Our Booking and Guest-Stay Conditions". This is also clearly explained verbally when guests make a booking directly with the resort.

Of course, the Beach Retreat’s greatest gift and asset is the Coolum coastline. Not only the strip of beach running parallel to the CBD: if you have time to do nothing else in Coolum, follow the southbound coastal boardwalk to Point Perry outlook, follow the pathway on to First Bay, décompressez in the shade of the pandanus trees, watch the waves smashing against sandstone boulders, washing into rock-pools. With neighbourhood blessings like these, and with an outlook over the beach from your balcony, the Beach Retreat does not really need to be more than functional.
We had two nights in a studio apartment, and it really was little more than functional: in most reviews, you will read that the Beach Retreat needs some refurbishment and much maintenance. But the price of accommodation is very reasonable, half the price charged by comparable Coolum motels.
One reviewer solicitously noted that the height of the step into the spa/shower was “is very high to get in and out of and would not be suitable for someone that is elderly.” We are. It is.

Considering its shortcomings and applying our usual question, “would we stay there again?”
Yes! We would.

In writing this review I will keep things in perspective by looking a price, location and the resort itself.

The price is good compared to what else is on offer along front in the town area. We paid $115 for a single night in an ocean view room. Most of the other resort and units will be close to double this. The resort itself is in an excellent location being almost opposite the main patrolled surf beach. The surf club, restaurants and shops are all within a stones throw so you can park the car and leave it. The resort also has its own restaurant and bar which is quite good. The staff and the check in was welcoming and friendly.

The resort complex itself is showing its age and due for a refurb. The room we stayed in was comfortable but looking a bit tired and I would imagine this would be consistent with the rest of the rooms. The rooms were clean and tidy. There are two outdoor spas, one is heated, and a large pool and a wading pool for kids.

A word of advice they charge for beach and pool towels so it might pay to bring your own.

Overall this resort is still good value and in a great location. If you are after 5 star lodgings you may be disappointed. If you want a good location at a reasonable price then I have no hesitation in recommending the beach retreat.

What a fantastic location. Beautiful beach, lovely cafe's and restaurants to choose from.
The room was filthy, carpet was torn and stained, dust on window sill was thick, 10 years worth of crap behind the rusty air conditioner unit, sand on dining chairs, sand and dirt in shower, balcony floor was filthy, balcony table was filthy, greasy finger marks on tv stand. When we complained we were told that it was because of the salt air. They did come in and wipe the window sill, kind of cleaned behing the air con. did a couple of wipes on the balcony, still filthy.
We have stayed in many many many places over our travels and this is the second worst ever.
It does not matter what price you pay, they place should be clean.
Before you stay, ask to see the room.

Wonderful place and the location directly across from the beach can't be beaten. The rooms all look over the central pool. The breakfast included in our room price at the cafe next door was wonderful too. We loved our stay and will be back. Thanks Beach Retreat.

Great accomodation for an awesome price. We booked only a few days prior to our stay and checked in to a lovely ocean view room. For only $150 a night we were thrilled to find the room was exactly as described and shown in photos. Although our stay was short, we will return to this motel again.

Reading the previous reviews, I'm thinking some people must just have low expectations, or they've had a newer unit. Our unit is old and drab, and is in desperate need of a face lift!!! Our lovely builder paid for us to go away for the night and at $200 on wotif is a complete joke, I would be filthy if I had of paid!! The air cons units out on the patio are old and rusty, the curtains in the rooms are filthy and rust marks on them, door frames all rusty, c'mon get yourselves together and modernize these dull units!! Only good thing is the location, but that's where it ends!! Thankfully only here one night!! This is a 3 star resort, not 4.5!!!
