Enjoyed my one night stay here before travelling to Alice Springs. The hostel owner was friendly and gave out plenty of free wifi which reaches your room (usually only common area!). This allowed me to do research on trips/tours, book my next place to stay and catch up with people from home.

The bed was very comfortable and I had a proper pillow for once - a lot better than I've had in previous hostels! And the check-out time was a bit later than the normal 10am which added to the relaxed atmosphere. (This may change during the busy period so don't quote me on it!)

The girls bathroom could do with a good clean but then kitchen was always tidy and had plenty of space to cook.

Would stay here again if I was travelling through Katherine!

Not too many people in a room, only 4 beds in the dorm room. Fan and aircon working well. Common areas were rather clean. Relaxed atmosphere, good place to meet nice travellers.
There is a place where you can hang your wet cloths. Bring your towel & soap. 30$ per night, you can have a discount if many nights. Coco is a nice and easy going Australian guy.

Looks impossible to make a booking online or over the phone. I guess the only way is to directly go there and book with them face to face.
In Australia it is common that reception hours are quite limited, so make sure to contact the hotel if you arrive early morning or late evening (during the night the main gate is locked).

If coco's backpacker has pretty basic facilities, the place has still some character. Coco is friendly and helpful, and i had quite good conversations with him. It's also a place where you gonna meet all kind of travellers which is also great!

Coco and Tony provide a choice of backpacker rooms or bungalows (built by Coco with unique artistic charm). Cocos house offers the opportunity to mix with international travellers and Territorians travelling to Katherine for business or a relaxing break. The gallery and art scattered throughout the hostel mixed with the wandering chickens cannot fail to relax and rejuvenate. Coco and Tony’s local knowledge as well as experience with supporting international travellers of all ages makes this hostel an affordable, ‘chicken soup for the soul’ stay within easy walk of Katherine shops and cinema. Secure parking and access after hours.

Stayed at coco's for 10 or 11 weeks for work. I have never been in a place that has felt more like home than here. Everyone was friendly, Coco and Tony had so many stories and treated you like one of the family. This is a great place to stay if you want to meet new people and have a great time. Due to many people working and living at the hostel, there was a curfew on when music had to be turned off, the main gate was locked at night, which always made me feel safe. If you can follow the few rules there are at this hostel, you will have the best time of your stay. Rooms are shared, there is a female toilet, and the others are shared. Honestly best choice staying here!!

Backpacking up the west coast to Darwin we had to stay a night in Katherine, everywhere was booked except cocos. This place looks like something out of a twilight zone episode, I wish we had have slept in the car. The sanitary conditions, picture trainspotting the part with the worst toilet in Scotland, and double the unsanitariness and you still have a way to go. Bed was uncomfortable, room was cramped, the door doesn't lock. Arrived and coco himself appeared to have mental health issues or a alcohol or substance abuse issue. We had paid for 2 nights and in the am when we asked for a refund for the second night which he previously assured us was OK, then commenced cursing, and swearing at us. We got to see all three of Cocos personalities on this trip. He then tried to recharge us for another night and when we advised this he swore and reluctantly gave a refund. Definitely worst accommodation I have had the misfortune to stay in. DO NOT STAY here.... drive through or sleep in your car.

No 1 tip : DO NOT STAY HERE

Aside from being filthy rotten dirty, the beds are painfully uncomfortable, the toilets and showers are disgusting and the manager is mentally unstable. God forbid you ask for a refund and he try's to swindle more money out of you putting it through the eftpos machine as a purchase ! He's a scammer and a con man of the highest order.
Only the most stoned and desperate stay here. If you've any sense you'd be better better sleeping in your car or tent elsewhere.
This place needs shut down pronto!!
Literally shocking standard of cleanliness. Feral level : Expert!

I've travelled in hostels all over the world for thirty years, this particular gem is inducted into my steaming pile of turd on toast award.
The two gentlemen in question run it as a personal fiefdom. They arbitrate their attentions to the paying customer depending on gender attractiveness and the schizophrenic moodswings that are observed from day to night.I was told i could be easily buried and forgotten in the desert ,during and argument in the commnal kitchen, personally didnt effect me as i have seen all types ,laughable in that they said it in front of other guests in the kitchen. But buyer beware ,these guys mechanisms have gone.
Charming slice of good ol Australian hospitality you aint going to get unless your The Rothschilds or Prince Charles.
A Quote from the horses mouth.

we had troubles on finding an economic place in Katherine on our way up to Darwin so this is how we ended up in Coco's Backpackers but it turned out to be the worst night during m 2 months Australia trip.

- reservation was forgotten. however, there was still space available.
- very small rooms (5 people on max 15m2).
- very uncomfortable beds
- freezing air condition or without no air to breathe on such a small space.
- bathroom / shower cleanliness horrible. we decided not to shower as we didn't dare to step into the shower.
- owner showed up completely drunk in our room re-arranging the air condition (obviously asked by somebody in our room?). anyhow, you do NOT enter the room at 3am and create a big fuzz waking up everybody.
- due to the owner being drunk, somebody else needed to return the deposit and open the gate in the morning at departure.
- its a clear sign when 4 out of 5 people from the same room 'escape' as early as possible in the morning and prefer to have breakfast at McD vs. in the hostel.

This backpackers is basic, with camping ground and two kitchens. The owners are friendly with very relaxed and laid back attitude. The hostel is quiet, stayed in total nearly 5 weeks. Recommend it. Katherine is an outback town so expect the randomness.
