You are steeped in the history of the Northland here at the Duke. Harbor side at Russell's waterfront. Walk to see the sights, hike, and enjoy the former Hell Hole of the Pacific. Quiet rooms. Older feel, the charm of the much used well-worn item. Helpful staff. Highly recommended.

One of the items on our bucket list was to eat here one day - we had a quick trip from Wellington to watch the Tall Ships race and also managed lunch. It was fabulous, service and food was outstanding and just ticked all of the boxes for us. Dessert was out of this world!

We had dinner which was so good we went back for lunch the following day. Beautiful location, gorgeous historic building. We tried most of the menu and were impressed...loved the kumara bread! Only one niggle..our waitress for lunch seemed like she would rather be anywhere else than at work!

We took the ferry over from Paihia -a delightful trip. Russell is a delightful little historic town. We were lucky to get a table in this lovely old hotel as it was Sunday lunchtime. We both only wanted a light lunch so we ordered Seafood Chowder. It was a good choice - delicious and very filling! The staff were very...

This place is in a wonderful location with great views for a late sunset. However there is too much going wrong. Some of the outside seating has no shade from the strong sun which makes it impossible to sit in for a long period. The food was disappointing, I repeatedly checked with the waiter about the type of steak the...

We caught the ferry over to Russell from Paihia. The Marlborough Hotel is New Zealand's oldest and being very keen to visit we decided to go for lunch. They were very busy on a Sunday but we were able to get a table quickly. No disapproval because we hadn't reserved a table. Service was very good. We ordered the Seafood...

We ended our 23 day trip in New Zealand at the Duke and what a wonderful finally it was. It is a beautiful Historic Inn with all the comforts of a modern hotel and despite some trouble with some (rare) unruly guests, they took care of us very well. They know how to take good care of their clientele. The...

We had a couple of cold beers on a lovely sunny summers day. They have tables outside with large umbrellas & helpful friendly staff. We decided to have lunch here & there were so many lovely dishes to pick from. We decided to have the Salt & Pepper Calamari & a West Coast Whitebait sandwich & both were really good....

A good place to stay. Our room did not face the sea and was reasonably priced. Fairly small but all amenities. Good food and great outlook to the beach and sea. Surrounded by New Zealand's early history. Reasonable bar prices. One of NZ's earliest houses and churches a short walk away, as well as a small Marine museum.

Stayed in seaview room which was basically equipped, e.g inadequate storage for clothes. No cooked breakfast available mid-week, continental basic at best. Extra charge of NZ$9 to change from filter to long black coffee. No lift so be prepared to manhandle your own cases up the stairs. Not a 4 star hotel in our opinion. It has tremendous potential but...
