We stayed for 2 nights at Parautane Lodge, and from the moment you step out onto the spacious deck you will be swept away by the breath taking scenery. The property is located in the hillside over looking the Tasman Bay and the mountains of the Arthur Ranges. There are four luxury mini suites. We stayed in the Pukeko suite which is tastefully decorated and clean with a modern en-suite bathroom. There are French doors that open directly onto the deck. This place and location has so much to offer but sadly so many things let it down on our visit. Firstly there was no one to greet as on arrival and we were entrusted to enter the property and settle ourselves in. We didn't meet the owner until the next morning. There is a breakfast menu on the website but unless you had done your due diligence you wouldn't know. Breakfast was enjoyable but little things were missing off each meal and we felt awkward asking for them. The property is showing cracks with attention to minor maintenance missing. Decking boards bowed and decking lights hanging out of there sockets. The painting in our room remained on the floor our entire stay. One highlight was the outdoor spa which is nestled into the hill which is private from the lodge and has spectacular views of the sunset while enjoying a glass or two. The property is about 10 mins from Nelson city which wasn't an issue as we enjoyed the seclusion and privacy that this lodge offers. Alan the owner is a friendly host who gave us some great insight to places to visit in the surrounding areas, which we took up. We felt like we were a distraction and not a welcoming guest to share this fantastic property and location.

We recently spent 7 nights at the lodge. Great hosts, amazing views, huge breakfast and very much appreciated two lounge chairs being set up in our room due to our longish stay. In hindsight, I would recommend Parautane Lodge for a 1-2 night stay, probably no longer. Seven nights in a B&B that doesn’t provide a communal lounge area for relaxing in or any internal kitchen facilities, was too long for us. We ended up having an early (5pm ish) dinner most nights in the city after a day out rather than having to drive back into town from the lodge and that became an irritation towards the end of our stay.

The lodge is about 4mls out of Nelson, high up a track with magnificent views from the large decking around the bedrooms. Perfect place to lie back and read or take a glass of wine. It is quiet and relaxed and yet within good reach of Nelson centre. Bedrooms are well equipped and the beds are comfortable. Breakfast is excellent and the hostess, Candice is very helpful. The Saturday market is well worth a visit. Nelson is a bit sprawling, merging into other small towns and getting to Coromandel is a treck. The clouds spoilt the sunset!

The Parautane Lodge is a beautiful hilltop B&B with a fantastic view of Tasman Bay. Candace is an amazing host and instantly makes you feel welcome. The room was spacious and perfectly furnished with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The en-suite bathroom was modern and immaculately clean. There is a spa available to guests which has a spectacular view of the surrounding region and brilliant night sky. The breakfast was sensational with fresh baked muffins and homemade bread to accompany a full hot breakfast made to order. Absolutely worth a visit and we are sure to return again!

We stayed here for four nights in December and it was a highlight of our 3 weeks in New Zealand. The views are stunning - during the day and at night. The food is delicious - especially the homemade muffins and banana bread! But what makes this place so special is the family - they are so kind and attentive and go out of their way. We will definitely return if we are back in Nelson - which we really hope to be!
