Detailed Reviews
Bud & Maggie have gone above & beyond for their services. This is a luxury backpacker hostel. Hostel provides free pick up / drop off from Greyhound bus stop which I never expected. I can easily take a taxi. The female dorm is spacious, quiet street & super clean. The ensuite bathroom has a separate toilet which once again little details mean a lot. They even have the Bible in the dorms which I love to see. The bed is comfy also supply clean quilt. The room has aircon. Maggie even helps me with my luggage. I will be back to this hostel again in my next visit.

The hostel is lovely and cosy and its like you are walking into someone else's house, which is a good thing! I stayed 8 years ago and nothing has changed since then, and I loved it then! The pool area is lovely and clean and so are the communal facilities which you can tell are cleaned regularly. It was also a pleasant surprise to have an oven in the kitchen as hardly any hostels provide an oven! The staff are the friendliest around and are always trying to make you feel welcome. I stayed over halloween and they were organising a halloween trip for guests and after I left they were also provided a shuttle bus to some local markets. They also provide free shuttle buses to the greyhound bus stop (except for the really early one in the morning) Thank you for looking after me and for a lovely stay!

Staff are beyond helpful here, from the free breakfast put out in the morning to the shuttle to the local shops. our car broke down and they were happy to hold on to the keys and liaise with the mechanic assigned to picked it up while we headed off on an overnight trip to fraser island. Our private room was comfortable and quiet. Kitchen facilities were spotless. Thank you for providing affordable, good value accommodation.

Had originally booked 1 night here which was fine. We phoned a week and a half before our stay to book the K’gari/Fraser Island tour through the hostel, a two day/one night trip. We also requested to book a room for the night we return from the trip as we would get back around 6pm, which we were told was fine and booked in. We were originally quoted a discounted price as we were booking the trip through the hostel, but when we had to pay the full amount on the day, we were disappointed to learn that the discount wasn’t applied. On returning from the trip and trying to check in to the hostel, we learned that the staff had actually booked the room for the night before, when we were still on K’gari, and that there wasn’t another room available at the hostel. As it was late in the evening, there was 0 vacancies in any hostel/hotel in all of Harvey Bay. The only solace we were given was an offer to sleep on the sofas in the cinema room. However, as it was a public area, we couldn’t access it until after 10pm and we’re woken up by other backpackers at 06.30 who decided to play pool whilst we were trying to sleep. I understand that the hostel is ran by people with minimal experience who are trying to back pack at the same time, but the whole experience with the staff felt very amateur, as two of them sat behind the desk laughing at us whilst we were very visibly upset and tired. Disappointed with the customer service, I wouldn’t bother staying here if you can avoid it.

Response from Flashpackers Hervey Bay, Other at Flashpackers Hervey Bay
Responded 28 Oct 2023
Dear Eilidh, Thank you for your earnest feedback. Our deepest apologies for the lack of written follow-up to your phone booking: we understand that would have prevented most of this unfortunate incident, which we sincerely regret. The staff on duty at the time of your arrival did their absolute best to find a suitable alternative – to which we would have been delighted to drive you - before resorting to the cinema room, which had been cleaned up and fitted with clean linens to maximise your comfort given the circumstances. As far as the access to the room was concerned, our receptionist volunteered to stay up afterhours to let you in at your desired time towards 11pm, rather than within 10pm per regular hours. You were free to access the room earlier as it was ready by 8pm. Furthermore, nobody would have been able to access the pool table at 6:30am, as it would have been physically accessible no earlier than 7am. We understand that seeing off-duty staff members share a small moment of hilarity may have upset you, however you can rest assured no humour whatsoever was directed toward you or your situation. On the contrary, they carefully prepared the room for you once it was clear no alternatives were available. We understand your frustration and your poor experience with our staff: even though several guests have been happy with our team, responsibility must be taken where due. Thank you once again for sharing your experience. Safe travels from all of us! :) Flashpackers Team

The free shuttle to and from the Greyhound bus stop was very useful. The communal areas are huge and very clean! The room was clean but seemed a little tired. The reception staff seemed friendly, however there was a bit of an atmosphere when we were leaving as some of the staff were shouting at eachother... a little unprofessional. They say you can hire bikes but they were broken with flat tyres when we asked. Otherwise, it was fine for a 1 night stay.

We stayed at Flashpackers for a night before and a night after a trip to Fraser Island. The hostel arranged pick up and drop off free of charge from the bus station. The hostel itself is clean spacious and with very good facilities. They have gone the extra mile to include such things as free breakfast, pool table, swimming pool and cinema room to make it feel more like home. The friendly Fijian family vibe from the owners and staff was great. Would 100% recommend staying here

There were alot of things I disliked about the hostel but by far the worst was the heat. Rooms only have aircon for a few hours and turn off at 5am, heat in the rooms is unbearable easily reaching 35° right into the evening.
Hostel itself has had better days, especially the grounds of the hostel it looks old and dirty and is in need of maintenance.

After booking a place and getting confirmation- few days(!) after that, they have remembered to contact me and tell me that they don’t know why it’s confirmed because they don’t have place and just canceled my booking. (2 days before check in day)
They have shown no care or intention to help and I ended up with lots of headaches and rearrangements I had to do midst my vacation and that cost me a lot.
Beware when booking with them… maybe have a backup plan in case they suddenly decide to cancel your stay.

Had a great stay at this hostel. Our room was very clean, with a nice bathroom. Bed linen and towels were provided. The common area included a big kitchen with shelves for each room, and a cozy living room. The staff were very friendly, and check-in/check-out was easy.

I stayed in a private room with private bathroom with my boyfriend. Room was clean + comfortable. The bed was soooo comfy + the sheets were so soft it was honestly a lovely nights sleep! Only downside was the town was so quiet! (Probably due to corona) If you come here I'd recommend this hostel but I honestly wouldn't recommend the town at the moment in time.
