I really enjoyed my stay at The Fish Tank Lodge. The Manager was so nice and accommodating. My friend and I had originally booked in at The Adelphi and upon arrival found it to be filthy, old/cold and not value for money. We walked passed The Fish Tank lodge and decided to see if they had spare rooms. It turned... More

Kaikoura is without a doubt one of my most favourite places in the world, and Fish Tank Lodge played an important part in our experience. The mixed dorms are clean, comfortable and fairly priced. There is a cosy lounge with a balcony looking out onto the sea. Its location is excellent, the beach is across the road, and it is... More

Lovely little place with gorgeous views & great location! Very helpful owner who was happy to give advise on trips. We had a private double without ensuite facilities however this wasn't a problem as the cleanliness was of a great standard. Kiakoura was possibly the nicest place I have ever visited, we were on a budget however if I was... More

This clean and well equipped hostel is maybe the best adress if you are traveling on a low budget and want to stay in Kaikoura for a few days! This applies even more, if you are traveling with the bus. The hostel is located in the citycenter, just opposite the bus station. So everything you might need, like the supermarket,... More

This ain't no hotel and that will be evident once you see the bathroom sized reception area, but this hostel is clean, comfortable and has a great attention to detail. Kitchen and lounge are way cool, beds comfy although more space would be good especially during busy season. I was looking for a chilled out clean hostel and this is... More

Although it has nice facilities, there is no room for personality. All communal parts of the hostel close at 10pm and guests are instructed to go to bed or to the bar. I asked the owner why he would restrict the hours of socializing, and he explained to me that I had many choices for accommodation in Kaikoura, and that... More

I had a great stay at the Fish Tank Lodge, and truly appreciate the hospitality from Craig and Emily. The hostel is rather small, but well-equipped. Kitchen was tidy and spotless, which every backpacker knows is almost unheard of. The lounge area has a large communal table/bench, and a nice big digital TV with a selection of DVDs. There is... Stayed just one night in the four bed female dorm, beds really comfy, nice pillows etc. Dorm is clean and well presented, there were only two of us in it so perfect, it would be a little cramped for four. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice big TV lounge and decent kitchen. Only downside was that you had to pay... More

Spent seven weeks travelling around New Zealand, and this was the best hostel I stayed in. The manager, Craig, couldn't do enough to make us feel at home, the room was newly decorated with enough room for all four of us, and the lounge was cosy and inviting. Large, fully-equipped kitchen, excellent location. Will definitely use again when I return... More

“We stayed in a 3-bed dorm on the ground floor for $60 per night in early January. Linens were clean and comfortable. Because the room was beside two bathrooms so it was quite humid and noisy, especially at night. The double room beside it looks like a much better choice (with its won bathroom)”

“I think the 3-bed dorm gives a possibility of a single bed, which I myself prefer. Otherwise the rooms do not really have views, but the lounge does, a nice one.”
