You do not want to miss staying here if you want to experience a piece of true New Zealand. We had such a great time talking with the owners and their family. The feel and ambiance are similar to McMenamins establishments in the US WA/OR area, only this is the real deal.

A wonderful place where you can have a great meal ! Interesting atmosphere given the history of the hotel and the related history of the mining industry. The owners are very friendly and willing to tell you all about their hotel and to give you advice where to go next. A must go, when you are in this area !!

Ultimately had a good time and good to visit this iconic pub.....found it strange that the whole reason the Pub made a name for itself was covered up by a map. Owners were a bit sarcastic as I suppose they get answered the same questions regularly, but I'm sure that's life as a Publican.

My sister and I loved staying at Formerly The Blackball Hilton. It felt more like staying with old friends than staying at a Hotel run by people we had never met before. We were welcomed with open arms, we had a great time playing cards with the locals, the meals were very tasty, I had Veal the first night and...

We visited this place in June. Arriving at 1.30 found that the hotel didn't open till 2 pm. Just after 2 we returned, and admired the facade. On entering, the proprietess said that there were no meals as it was Winter. We opted to have just chips and a wine. She spoke rudely about her partner lighting the fire, then was...

Staying at the Formerly the Blackball Hilton was a treat. Great old time hosting with a huge open fire. Warm and inviting. The room was functional and clean. Toilets and shower shared down the hall. The dinner was superb. Venison steak, mash potatoes and roast vegetables. What more could a man need? The pub was humming for the party. Great...

We enjoyed everything about our visit. Dinner was fabulous next to the warm open fire. The hotel his clean and cared for yet you are surrounded by the rich history of the area. We loved walking the Croess track for the day and coming back to the comfort of the hotel.

Hospitality lacking, host smart, made us feel as though we should've known all about Blackball's History. Meal was average in the Hotel, would not reccommand. Best place to visit was the Butcher and art shop at the end of the main street.

Welcoming and very comfortable hotel and public house, with a historic charm and interesting past. We'll worth the visite, pleanty to see and do around the area, and more than one day is recommended... just stay!

Stayed a weeknight and it was very clean and comfortable. The dinner was an absolute delight and delicious! Pistachio encrusted rack of lamb....a beautifully cooked steak...yummy entrees! Very, very good indeed! An interesting place to look around, as is the small town. Bought some local goods from the butcher shop (salami, black pudding and sausages!) A great place to stay...
