My partner and I stayed at Wilderness House for 2 nights, but truly wished we could have stayed longer. Gayle was a friendly and welcoming host, who went out of her way to ensure we had everything we wanted, including giving us some advice on where to eat in town. The house is stylishly decorated, and the bed was wonderfully comfortable to sink into after a long day of winery tours. The bathroom is big enough to hold a party, with a fantastic rainfall shower too. Breakfast was plentiful and fresh, and if you aren't eating out in town, I highly recommend an evening of your own-cooked dinner on the back verandah, where you can listen to the sounds of the Aussie bush. Wilderness House is also only a few minutes' drive from Prevelly Beach, a stunning example of Australia's crystal clear waters and a great nearby place to watch the sun go down into the ocean. The directions were explained well by Gayle, but it was quite easy to find. If you're wanting somewhere that's in walking distance to amenities like shops and bars, then this place will not suit, however if you're wanting a bit of luxury in the peaceful surrounds of the beautiful bushland, then this is perfect. With only 2 rooms, you will never be crowded by other guests, a big bonus in my book!
I can't recommend this wonderful place enough, and will definitely be staying here when I next return to Margaret River.

I have not stayed at Wilderness House but recently went through the site Airbnb to book two nights in November (since cancelled). It’s a cautionary tale for others and one I wish to share. Others seem to have good things to say about host Gayle Cornould’s amenities, the cleanliness of the property and its facilities so I am happy to give the benefit of the doubt here. My experience with her lays elsewhere:

1. The misrepresentation of her accommodation on the Airbnb site

My requirement when searching for accommodation was for two separate bedrooms, single occupancy for each. At the time I booked, the Wilderness House Airbnb site clearly stated that the accommodation was for “entire house, two bedrooms, two beds”. I have screen grabs of the site outlining this and it was on this basis that I booked. Host Gayle Cornould confirmed my booking with an email saying, however, that the accommodation was only for two people in a suite. When I queried this and said that I had booked on the basis of two bedrooms, she said it was stated “clearly” on the Airbnb website that only a suite was available with another bed available for the room if I wanted. In an attempt to try and settle this, I then offered to take the other suite but she said she didn’t offer single occupancy, that I should “book at Quality Inn” and I could take it up with Airbnb if I wanted – oh, and this was her final email on the matter. She said I could cancel the booking at no cost to myself. I had no alternative but to do so.

On 1 August 2017, several hours after the confusion she caused with my booking due to her inaccurate and misleading website, she changed the description of her site. I took this as a clear admission that her original description was inaccurate.

If anyone wants the full transcript of emails between Ms Cournould and myself, as well as fuller screen grabs, I’m happy to provide them.

2. The refund of my deposit

When it became clear that Ms Cornould would not accommodate my attempts at a settlement, as mentioned above she said in email correspondence that I could get my deposit back at no cost to myself. When I went to do this, I discovered that only 50% would be refunded. I referred this to her and she did not reply. I emailed again and her answer was “You have to cancel the booking directly with Airbnb I can't”. This was patently untrue as the Airbnb site said that the 50% deposit refund was with agreement with the host, ie her. Again, I emailed her and reminded her that she had undertaken to refund my deposit to me at no cost to myself. It was only then that she contacted Airbnb, which is what she should have done in the first place. Airbnb immediately contacted me to arrange for my entire deposit to be refunded. It took four attempts I should not have had to make in the first place before she acted. Her actions were stalling, blocking and deceptive - at best.

3. Her conduct

When she realised that this transaction was not straightforward, ie I had booked on the premise of two bedrooms, her manners deserted her. For example, rather than try to reach a resolution with me or accommodate me, her solution was to tell me “Use quality inn if you want an alternative option”. She was curt in her dealings. For example, “This is my final reply on this issue and you can consult directly with Airbnb if you wish”. She lacked integrity. For example, the way she dealt with the refund of my deposit. And, she failed to take any responsibility for this matter by not apologising or even being the slightest bit courteous. I might not have been a customer this time but I might have come back and recommended other people.

Hi team at Trip advisor I have replied to this review and today deleted my reply as this guest has never stayed with us at Wilderness House, is an Airbnb enquiry guest who sort tobook both suites for a single rate and has had no experience of our services It has been on the website for a year and I would argue she has not met the guidelines as she was never a guest. Please can you now remove this review .... it is bonkers.?

Stayed here last year but haven't had time to review it until now. Wilderness House (what a poetic name) is, true to its name, located in the middle of the Australian bush, conveying a wonderful sense of place. That being said, it's also very well located for visiting the attractions in the Margaret River area - 10 minutes drive from the town of Margaret River, 10 minutes drive from the gorgeous beach at Prevelly, etc.

The rooms are beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Bathrooms equipped with a spotlight for cool winter evenings (very much appreciated).

Best of all is Gayle's service - her breakfast spreads each morning were amazing and filling. She also was very helpful with tips on where to go and what to do in the Margaret River area.

Stay here and you won't regret it! 6 months later and this place still sticks in my memory as a wonderful, idyllic stay.

The location of the property is in the middle of bush and is a new experience for those who never live in the bush like me. Although it is deep in the bush, the drive to town center is under 10 mins and it is convenient to go anywhere within the region.

The house is big and modern. Toilet is clean and installed with a warm light for cold day. The garden was a little messy and not organised. No wifi in the property. We appreciate almost everything especially the hot cooked foods in the morning.

I booked the property from one of the online Apps and everything has been go well for years. When I arrived, Gayle was showing a huge surprise on the presence of my 4 years old girl. "I not been informed about this and I need to charge her because I need to buy water". Is water free in Margaret River Region? In another occasion, I am just showing my courtesy to carry the used utensils into the kitchen but I been "block and push rudely" right in front of the door. This really surprise me and it leave a very negative and unfriendly moment especially for someone hosting a B&B.

WE welcome children at Wilderness House but it is important that they are booked in at the time of booking. Some guests insist that children are not present during their stay and it was fortunate that this was not the case during your stay. I have had a number of occasions recently where guests are arriving with 1 or 2 children and this has not been stated in the booking request. I don't think this is respectful. You have misquote me in your review. Your child was charged at a child's rate for breakfast, linen , room occupancy and use of services - and this includes water. At this time of year I have to pay for water as all the water is from the rain in winter time and by this time in summer the tanks are dry and we pay for water and its delivery. There are lots of properties in Margaret River that have to do this. As a guest in a B&B there are guest areas and private areas for the owner/manager. Guests have a large area but my living space and kitchen area are private. Most guests when being helpful understand the separation of spaces and place items in the public areas. I am sorry if you were upset but note that you have had many positive things to stay about your stay at Wilderness House and thank you.

Talk about location, location-Wilderness House is set in the quiet and peaceful Australian bush, no other house in sight, yet 3 minutes to Surfers Point and 7 minutes to Margaret River shops and restaurants. It is right in the heart of wine country-Cape Mentelle winery is just minutes up the road.
The accommodation is also very new and modern-gorgeous bathroom, king size bed, spacious bedroom and a lovely shared sitting room for breakfasts and relaxing.
Gayle, your host, is wonderful and can answer any question you may have about travelling in this gorgeous part of WA.
Breakfasts are 2 course with a hot main e.g. eggs and bacon. Cereal is muesli or a hot porridge-yum!
Our Booking.com reservation stated "wifi is available in all areas and is free of charge," but this is an error. We used a hotspot from iPhone to iPad which worked well, but I think international travellers need to be aware of this.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 days in Wilderness House.

Thank you for your review and happy that you enjoyed your stay at Wilderness House. Now that the Margaret River council provides free WiFi services in town I no longer offer wifi and Yes I will correct the Wifi information on the booking.com website which states Wifi is available for $10 a day. My daughter and I drove down from Perth to Margaret River for the weekend and stayed at Wilderness House. It was a perfect weekend getaway. The location is absolutely beautiful: remote and woodsy, yet not that far from the things you want to see. It is so peaceful in the woods; the only disturbance is the black cockatoos who gather in the top branches. Kangaroos are plentiful on the roads at dusk.

Gayle was a wonderful hostess and made us feel welcome and at home. The rooms are spacious and well equipped and there is a shared guest kitchen for those who want to cook or just make themselves a drink. The breakfasts are out of this world and Gayle was also very helpful as we planned our sightseeing. From Wilderness House, we were in easy driving distance of Cape Leeuwin, the Caves, and of course, all the wineries and other lovely shops in Margaret River itself.

I would definitely come back here again and would recommend Wilderness House as the perfect place for anyone wanting a peaceful and refreshing holiday. Thanks for everything, Gayle!

I went down south to Margret River with the wife for a weekend getaway. We were so impressed with the location. Our room was fantastic, the room came with a king size bed and a large bathroom and the decor was amazing. Wilderness House is close to beaches and the town centre yet so secluded and peaceful. There is also a private courtyard attached to the room. The living area was perfect and came with a kitchen area and a nice lounge area if you want to just lay down with a cup of coffee and just listen to the birds sing, which is what did! I recommend Wilderness House to anyone who loves to go bushwalking, surfing, wine tours, site seeing and or just looking for a peaceful weekend getaway. Wilderness House is in the perfect location to achieve all this and more!! We will be back!!

My partner and I spent two beautiful nights at this very new bed and breakfast set on a bushland block of 8 acres.. The bedrooms and bathrooms are extravagantly spacious and luxurious. The bathroom is large and has a rainshowere and opens out onto a small private courtyard. The bedroom has a large comfortable kingsize bed, lovely fittings and decor with two windows looking out onto a wonderful bush setting. There is a spacious lounge/kitchen area off the bedrooms where you can relax and read, have a coffee or a wine or wander outside to outside courtyards or go for a walk in the bush. There is a small kitchen with a fridge and microwave if you want to get takeaway for your evening meal. The photos say it all. The beach is about 5 minutes away by car and the town about the same. Breakfast is generous, fresh and includes local products and the lady who runs the place very friendly but makes sure you can enjoy your time alone. She has her own separate area.

Hello Kirsty When guests bring their pets I ask that they bring their dogs bedding and this helps the pet settle in. The suites are large and each have direct access to the garden areas, as well as the guest areas. I check with fellow guests if they are ok with the pet being in the guest Areas and to date there has been no objection. As there is a lot of guest area, large suites and 8 acres of garden and bushland there is room for everyone and the dog. Gayle

Hi There are 2 suites One has a queen bed and the other a king size bed. I often put a single bed in the queen size suite if guests want 2 separate beds, eg 2 girlfriends or where a family have a child. We don't have a single bed only in the suites Breakfast is included in the tariff. Gayle Wilderness House
