Once an art gallery, cafe and private residence of flamboyant Melbourne artist Mirka Mora and her husband Georges, the Tolarno Hotel has always been a creative space in St Kilda. The tradition continues at Tolarno Hotel. In a salute to the charismatic Mirka, the hotel’s walls and halls are hung with striking artworks by emerging and accomplished artists, 150+ works in total including a number of Mirka’s – guest’s often comment that it’s like staying in an art gallery. Today our 4 star hotel awards 3 major student art prizes via the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), Monash University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the yearly winners are exhibited in the hotel foyer for 12 months. Many of the artworks in guest rooms are prize-winning student paintings; the remainder are works by prominant local artists. Combine these striking surrounds with our friendly service, well-appointed rooms and suites and location in the heart of St Kilda’s dining and entertainment precinct and you have a stay like no other. With trams just a 30-second walk from our front door offering easy access to Melbourne’s CBD attractions, shopping, restaurants, events and business precinct, you’re connected to everything the city has to offer.

Tolarno Hotel feels like a family business.

I've stayed at Tolarno Hotels when in Melbourne on holiday with my daughter for over 10 years. They have stylish, comfortable hotel rooms for a fraction of the price you’d expect to pay at other 4 start hotels... meaning you can spend what you save on all the other great things that St Kilda and the city of Melbourne has to offer!

Clean bathrooms, eclectic artwork and furnishings, personal reading lights and power points all helping to make you feel at home. AND bed choices have two to four pillows! We love that the hotel has Wi-Fi included. Each room has climate control, TV's, soft towels and bed linen, tea and coffee making facilities. It's lovely to find all the rooms we have stayed in over the years had a fridge and microwave included.

You won't get a better location in St Kilda that Fitzroy Street. It's a vibrant part of the city with a colourful history. The hotel has a security code on entrance with each hotel room having security key-cards to enter and operate power to the rooms. Reception is open until early evening with the current managers living on-site at the hotel. Any issues and there is a contact number provided.

The hotel feels like an old mansion that has been renovated to accommodate a restaurant and hotel guests over the years. The rooms are not soundproofed so room selection is key depending on what hours you intend to keep at the hotel. I've found this to be more of a mindful caution especially if staying on weekends. Speak to the staff to find the best room choice for you and know that weekends are notoriously busy and noisy with clubs located nearby on Fitzroy Street.

We have always felt safe at this hotel. Our car has felt safely parked in the side street or in the nearby parking lot (undercover). We take precautions with our belongings as in any city and keep our wits about us if going out at night.

What else can I add? I do my research online for the best price then call the hotel to book directly. This approach has been appreciated by the hotel over the years. I always ask for extra toiletries when staying with my daughter and extra towels to accommodate face washing and wet hair.

Current covid restrictions has meant rooms are not serviced during your stay which for us was an opportunity to get settled in any comfy for a few days without the need to tidy for housekeeping.

We intend on staying in every room type and for the most part have covered many of them over the years. Looking forward to booking the two bedroom suite on our next stay.

The Tolarno Hotel is well placed to explore both the city and St Kilda Beach. The entrance was through a Restaurant/Bar which was off putting when we arrived but once inside all was fine. Its public areas are very quirky with an art collection displayed and weird and wonderful lighting. Our room over looked the main street with a balcony but we were not disturbed by noise. The room was bright and spotlessly clean with an extremely comfortable bed and good facilities. Staff were helpful and there was plenty of Tourist information to hand.

We have stayed here many time over the years and it is handy to many local restaurants and saves having to drive home. The hotel is clean and quiet with comfortable beds. If you want a morning jog you can head around the Albert Park Lake and its close to the beach as well. Fitzroy Street has been cleaned up a bit and there are now many breakfast options plus its only a short tram or light rail trip from the city. Very helpful staff and we will stay here again.

Aesthetically it would be cool, but it seems like it's seen better days. The front desk closes at 8pm, so good luck if your flight is delayed or you lose your key (instructions for late check-in are emailed, but if you don't have data that does no good). We bumped into a mother couple that were past repeat customers who were similarly confused about the late check-in; apparently this is a new policy and they were very dismayed. I question their business model since if I wanted to deal with inconveniences like that, I would just stay at an AirBnB or equivalent. The restaurant out front wasn't open the entire week we were there; according to a friend, it was open one night the week before. The bar was only open one night, and it seemed like it was just the bartenders drinking with friends. They did some repainting while we were there, but apparently there was a minor flood in the hallway the week before. Everything just sort of smacks of disrepair and poor management... At lest the staff were friendly? The mattress was not great, but okay, and stained on the bedskirt. They apparently only half-cleaned our friend's room and told him that they don't clean on Sundays, which doesn't make sense (but maybe he was confused; that was the day we were locked out). No elevator that we saw, so be prepared to carry your luggage upstairs. The Wifi was a bit slow and would cut in and out. We thought the back of the hotel would be quiet since it's not on the main street, but it was super loud many mornings due to recycling pickup. Overall, I was just disappointed since it seemed like it had been a really nice place. The neighbourhood is maybe half gentrified; there are some really good brunch spots around, a few bars, but also some concerning characters on the streets. Convenient trams to get to downtown.

The Airport Shuttle Bus does not go to the 'Tolarno,' the Skybus St Kilda, stop 4, is 180 metres away. I rang the hotel two days before our arrival to confirm the shuttle stopped at the Tolarno and was assured it did. The Hotel Restaurant and bar are no longer open, the private sub letters moved out a month ago. We think this was the reason there was little light in the 40 metre entrance-way inside the building This 4-storey hotel has no lift. Most of the walls are painted a dark blue creating shadows on the poorly lit stairways and about half the hallways. There are some rather good large paintings on a lot of the passageway walls. Both sets of stairs are dangerous with worn carpet tread on the front edge of many of the stairs The room was tired, with chips out of the woodwork, dirty windows and stained dirty glass in the shower. I particularly did not like the attempt at creating open hanging space. It was made of the cheapest stained and worn white melamine. The promised broadband was very occasional. Finally the rain shower head was in the wrong place too close to the wall, one hinge was broken so I had to hold it up while I showered. I did complain about this but nothing happened. On the plus side David the manager tried very hard in a losing situation to cater for our needs. The cleaners were keen although they did forget us on Sunday. The toiletries were decent. Over the years we have stayed at a lot of Melbourne Hotel's and this is by far the poorest we have ever se

Dear Provew111, Thank you for taking out the time to leave us a review & feedback, we really appreciate your time. We apologise for any inconvenience held during your recent stay. We are a 2 Storey plus mezzanine level Heritage listed Boutique Hotel, that is iconic to St Kilda & Melbourne with it's bohemiam styles crossed with some contempary. We are first & formost an Art Hotel, therefore you will see many Paintings inside the Hotel & Artwork from the famous legendary Icon herself, Mirka Mora who once lived & owned the entire Building during her time, therefore the hotel itself is a unique Building with lots of colour & quirky designs, maybe not to all tastes however very loved by many. The Front Bar & Restaurant is separately owned, however will re-open soon. We are happy to know David went above & beyond to assist you during your stay. We do hope you will come back & visit us once again very soon, & thank you for staying at Tolarno Hotel. Kind Regards Tolarno Hotel Reservations

Location was perfect. Access to public transport was fast and easy, there were many delicious restaurants surrounding, and the beach was a short walk away. Hotel staff were kind and helpful, willing to do their best with any requests.

An elevator would have helped a lot with transporting luggage to our upstairs room, however we knew to expect this.

The room was well-soundproofed and we loved the multiple pieces of art scattered throughout.

We were a bit disappointed with the cleanliness of our room: the fridge and shower stall needed to be detailed, and there was a cigarette butt underneath the bed (in a no-smoking-allowed facility). All quickly rectified when issues were discussed with hotel staff. The hotel seemed rather like she's an ageing old lady.

That being said, we are repeat customers and would stay here again. The friendly service and great location are paramount.

Firstly the bad - the coffee machine smelled stale like it hadn't been cleaned, the shower recess was clean but the grout needs attention, there was no milk in the room. The room was clean but worn.
Having said that, the Hotel rate is reasonable for the area. The bed was comfortable, it was very quiet and the room has everything you need for your stay (except milk).
The location was great, a few minutes to the airport bus, city trams, restaurants, cafes and bars and also a Woolworths.
Also 15 minutes walk to the beach, Luna Park and the Palais Theatre.
It is also worth walking a few minutes across the road to a cafe called The Grocery Bar for a a fantastic Big Breakfast!
Summing up, next time I'm in St Kilda I wouldn't hesitate to stay again at Tolarno.

We also apologise for the Coffee Machine & Milk not offered in a clean odour free condition & enough milk during your stay. Yes the Beach is only just less than a 5 Minute walk & a lovely 15 Minutes walk to Luna Park & the Iconi Palais Theatre, also Acland Street shopping mall. We do hope to see you once again very soon. The Tolarno Hotel is great for a long weekend away or even a long term stay. We stayed in a twin room on the second floor which was very roomy and set at the back of the property near the stairs. Large bathroom and small kitchen area with all the necessities for tea and coffee and toast as well as a small portable heater to make the bathroom nice and cosy.. The shower is large with a rain shower head and the water comes on very hot with great pressure. The beds were very comfortable and the room had a variety of pillows to suit your comfort. The Hotel is very close to three tram stops and is only 4 minutes from St Kilda Beach. The hotel is set on a small local shopping strip which has restaurants, Pizza Hut, a newsagent and a Metro Woolworths. The staff are so helpful and catered to our every need.
Only 1 negative for me was that I had my leg in a toe to knee cast and there are no lifts which made access a little awkward but the staff, on our arrival, took our cases to our room while we settled in.
TRAVEL TIP. DO NOT get the Skybus to St Kilda (peninsula) from Tullamarine, as the bus only has 1 drop off point which is about 1.5 kilometres from the Hotel. Get the Skybus to Southern Cross Station and catch the 96 or 96A tram and get off at Canterbury Road, St Kilda, one of the 3 stations with 50 metres of the Tolarno.

A great little hotel in an excellent location, housing some wonderful artwork.

The managers (Mira and Eric) are very responsive and extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel doesn't currently have its own website, but if you find a good price on a booking site, they will try to price match or price beat if you call or email (info@tolarnohotel.com.au) the hotel directly. This was particularly beneficial during the uncertainly of COVID restrictions, as they were very flexible with date changes.

A comfortable hotel, but some of the rooms are a little tired and the hotel is very much in need of a makeover. This said, the convenience of its location, ample close by undercover parking and great management somewhat compensate.

Definitely our favourite go-to hotel in St Kilda.

Easy check in, friendly staff, great room, comfortable beds, extremely quiet, central to transport, shops etc. Excellent value for money. I was amazed how quiet the hotel is considering it's location, with a tram stop literally at the front door of the hotel. The other thing that I like is that you can open the windows, which have californian shutters so the room is dark and there is also a ceiling fan to circulate the air in the room. Fully equipped kitchen too,

Hello Antje, Thank you for your query. We do have a website. I am unable to place it on this message but if you google us it should come up. We have twin rooms available for the dates you are after; in either a superior mansion or a balcony. The car park we use (about 180 metres from the hotel) has a clearance of at least 2.1 metres but we can assist with another car park where it is higher. I don't think it will be a problem. The hotel has 37 rooms so it is quite boutique and it has 4 levels with the bulk of the rooms being on the first floor. Please don't hesitate to contact us on 03 95370200 Kind regards, Jane
