Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful hotel with cosy rooms and high ceiling. Parking is free too. Very friendly staff and they have a restaurant as well. Great air conditioning as well.

A few issues i see is the dust behind the bedside tables, we have to shift it to use the plug for charging of phone and its absolutely dusty there. The edges of the shower screen are quite filthy at the bottom, would be great if there are maintained clean. Another issue is the door of neighbouring rooms, they are always slamming it! Like each time it closes, we wake up. So maybe you can set the door closers to permanently soft close instead; its a very easy fix.

Overall, this is one of the more modern motels we have stayed in and loved it. Hopefully you can take care of these minor issues and it’ll be perfect.

Arrived last minute on a Friday winter's night as was driving to Melbourne and fatigue stopped me at Sale. While considering whether to continue I saw The Criterion, all lit up and looking inviting. I booked a room and had dinner. The meal was something else: looked and tasted delicious. The room was clean and modern with a big TV. Staff were pleasant, helpful and professional. The experience was so much more than expected. Only suggestion is that I would have booked directly rather than through a booking service if the price was comparable. The cost through the booking service was $54 per night less than booking directly with The Criterion. As a woman travelling alone I really appreciated the standard of both the facilities and the service and recommend highly.

I can keep this brief. This is quite simply one of the best boutique hotels I have ever stayed in Country Victoria. Our room was of a very high standard, clean and tidy and functional. I was stunned how good it is.

Further to this, we ate in Hotel restaurant and drank in the bar. Again both were superb, and staff were really friendly and helpful.

Can't fault a thing.

I was so looking forward to staying here, but three issues made me downgrade my rating for the Criterion Hotel, Sale.
First, the good points. The whole hotel has undergone a recent renovation and it is beautiful. There is attention to detail, and the finishes throughout are lovely. I want to give credit to those who undertook the refurbishment.
We stayed in Room 12, which was a King Deluxe Room. First, the size of the rooms are "modest", the en-suites are "bijou", but that is fine. Both the room and en-suite were spotless with lovely amenities and toiletries in the en-suite. What made me downgrade my rating was 3 things.
1. The only natural light in the room is from 2 windows placed high towards the (very high) ceiling. You cannot actually look out these windows, and to be honest it felt slightly claustrophobic and a bit like being in a prison cell, although a very luxurious one.
2. There is nowhere comfortable to sit in the rooms, other than the bed. This really annoys me. There is a small desk and standard chair, but there is no comfy chair. In this room there was space to place a chair beside the bed. This may not be the case in the smaller rooms.
3. The closet was so full of mini bar stuff there was nowhere to actually hang your clothes. The closet contained a small fridge (full of alcohol and other mini bar items) and on top of the fridge there was more mini bar stuff and glasses. There was no way you could hang anything in this closet without potentially knocking over this (unwanted) stuff.
Two out of my three concerns could be easily rectified (chair and mini bar). I realise the placement of the windows may have been due to the original design of the building, as the corridor you walk down to reach the rooms is bathed with sunlight due to it being adjacent to a wall of windows.
The rooms are on the first floor and a final positive point is the small lift that has been installed so that those with mobility issues or a heavy suitcase can access the rooms via a lift. Otherwise there is a lovely staircase which you can use.

The room was clean, recently renovated and ideal for a night’s stop over. Check in was smooth, efficient and friendly. Having the bar downstairs, one of the most popular pubs in town, was handy and they served one of the best Chicken Parma I have had in a long time.

The food was lovely for dinner tonight, although we ordered a side of potatoes to share, half way through our meal the potatoes hadn’t arrived. We reminded the waiter, the potatoes arrived at the end of our meal. We were still charged for them. The service was abysmal, I booked a booth a week ago as my husband is hearing impaired and finds the main restaurant echoes and so finds it difficult to hear. We arrived tonight and were sat at tables in the main restaurant. During the evening one booth remained empty the whole time. When we mentioned this to management, he was really dismissive. We never promise booths he said, while they had when I booked, he couldn’t even maintain eye contact. The staff on a whole need a lesson in respect and how to treat their customers.

We came in the evening and the reception was closed, but they had texted us instructions into how to access our room keys. I used the lift to reach the first floor rooms. Our rooms were well equipped, but the bar fridges were filled with their things and there was little space for ours. There is a charging facility for electric cars and we were in urgent need to use it. One of two sockets was out of order, but the other one did the job for us. My room had a window overlooking the main road, but the view was of a building site. They cannot help that. We were also in need for a feed, but the restaurant next door was closed. We all had trouble with wi-fi, as the information was on a business card in the last place we looked. Again not their fault.

Stayed here for one night. Got Room 1, which overlooks the main road and the balcony (that has customers sitting just outside the window). The room was small and there was no desk to work. The room is also closest to the door that enters onto the main hotel. Noisy with people moving back and forth. No breakfast available.

We dined as a group of 16 at The Criterion with a last minute booking and Chad was wonderful accommodating us. Julie provided exceptional service and the food was outstanding. Everyone enjoyed the meal and the setting. Thank you to all the staff for a great night.
