A gem of a hotel. Themed around an artist whose works are dotted in and around the hotel particularly on the ground floor. I know some people would be critical of the size of the rooms but they are extremely well appointed, beautifully decorated with the space used cleverly and creatively. For example, hanging on the inside of the door is what looks like large paint drips (in keeping with the "arty" nature of the hotel) but what are in fact coat hangers. The bathroom was clean, bright and well laid out.
Breakfast was very reasonably priced and as good as you would want. Parking (although in the open) was at no cost and right outside the front door. The 2 receptionists , Anna in the evening and an Asian lady in the morning were friendly, efficient and a credit to what an outstanding hotel.
We will certainly be back.

Check in was quick and simple. The hotel had good covid protocols in place with clearly marked sanitise pens and all staff wearing masks.
Lifts were limited to two people at a time but this did not cause any delays.
Room was a little small considering the price but was comfortable, clean and had all we required by way of toiletries, towels etc.
My only complaint was that the bedding consisted of a think Doona with no top sheet I was continually throwing it off and on throughout the night.
Check out t was quick and breakfast was good with lots of choice via a la carte menu.

I only stayed for one night and I found the room to be quite adequate. It was very comfortable with a good bed and bathroom. My room was located at the rear away from the main road, noting also the hotel is itself situated quite well back from the passing road. I had a very quite night.
An unusual feature is the cafe come restaurant situated right in the main entry thoroughfare. Moreover the check in desk is located immediately adjacent to the open kitchen. Nevertheless the meals served were quite acceptable.
My understanding is that this was not a purpose built hotel, but a conversion/adaptation of hospital quarters., hence the quirky layout.

The hotel was clean and tidy. the staff were ok, however we had requested a room with easy accessibility, as I had just undergone surgery on both hands. I needed my wife to assist in everything. On arrival, after we paid for the room, we found our room, and it was "cosy" short for small, more like a cheaper Ibis hotel, which I have used in the past and no had issues with, clean but very small. This room had a one person bathroom, and even smaller shower area. When we asked if there was larger / accessible room we were told all the rooms were the same, one had a small extra room but all bathrooms were the same. We ended up staying as there was a no refund policy, but we have learned an important lesson, deposit only - check the room is what you requested and don't believe it till you have seen it, all before you pay.
We will never use the Mercure in Bendigo again, even as Mercure members we believe this was badly handled. Would have loved to have seen them offer somewhere else and say, sorry we could not accommodate you, be honest, especially as you admitted it was in your notes what we needed and you still went ahead and took the money, then had the gall to ask us our opinion on the way out, when we told you our opinion the manager a gent asked if we had asked for an accessible room or approached them after we saw our room ! the very person that we asked was right there and we had prompt him to tell the manager he had handled it.
Bad training and exceptionally bad customer handling.
The 2 stars are, 1 an honest opinion of your room staff keeping it clean, 2 for the night manager, a young lady, a new member we believe, assisting us with some ice for my swollen hands, everything else including the Tuesday, male manager and lady, a resounding 0. That young lady and your cleaners are the only ones holding you above flat 0 / negative if we could

Paid for 2 nights in a Superior room, as advertised on their website: Soundproof doors and Soundproof Room.
The road noise through the balcony sliding doors was like camping next to an airport runway. After our first night I spoke to their manager on the phone as he was at home, he couldn't care less and said "You must be a light sleeper!", I said I wanted to be moved to the other side of the building and he told me they didn't have that type of room on that side of the building, so I said I wanted to check out early. He then told me "We have a no cancellation policy" in which he charged me for 2 night's stay! $720 it cost me for 1 nights' accommodation plus I had to find another hotel for the next night, I highly recommend Quality Lakes Hotel Bendigo which is so quiet.

This was the smallest motel room I have ever stayed in. I have never had to shuffle sideways to get past the bed before. The manager even admitted they had to have special shorter beds made to suit the rooms. Somehow, they made the photos on the website make the rooms looker bigger than they really were. I would not have booked, had I known.

The room smelt of mould and the shower was dirty. And on inspection the manager even blocked her nose when entering. I was offered to change rooms which i declined, because of rhe fact if they gave that room to me for $250 then someone else will end up in there.

Response from Mercure Bendigo Schaller, Guest Services / Front Office at Mercure Bendigo Schaller
Responded 17 Sept 2023
We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us. However, we offered to move you into another room at the time, but it was declined. We even went and assisted in adding a scent to the room, however, there was no mould in the bathroom or room itself. The duty manager offered to move you into another room multiple times, but it was declined every time. Our pricing is dynamic and is affected by few factors such as demand, occupancy and local events if any. I do apologise for the inconvenience, but we also tried to ensure that we resolve any issues at the time. We hope that you enjoyed the rest of your visit to Bendigo. Best Wishes, Hotel Manager, Faiz Rashid.

Based on its reputation, and our previous experience with this chain we booked tdirectly with this hotel for two nights. We were looking for some comfort and leisure so accepted the two day cost of $534.

We atrrived at about 11.00 and not unexpectedly the room was not ready. We were given an undertaking that the make up of the room would be givenm priority and if we went for a walk in town we would receive a phone call when the room was available.

At 3 o’clock when we had still not heard any word from the hotel we returned to he hotel andt booked in.

We were directed to our room on the first floor.

On opening the door what we saw was rather laughable. It’s almost as if you tripped over the front door coming in you would’ve knocked yourself unconscious on the wall at the other side. It was tiny to say the very least. There is absolutely no provision to put the bags in. And the shower was simply small corner of the small toilet.

The room, [particularly at the cost was quite laughable. When looking at the website after viewing the room on Google/TA it disclosed the room as 19 sq M. This is about 2/3 the size of any standard room we had ever stayed in anywhere in the world.

We decided this was not for us particularly at the $524 cost for two nights that we were paying.

After a short "discussion"with reception the company finally agreed to refund 100% of our fee. ( initially it wanted a cancellation fee on one days tarrif ) Of course, at this stage it was about 3.30 -4 o’clock and all motels we tried to contact were booked out. This left us little choice but to drive home, another 160K

Stayed overnight, on arrival was not welcoming or friendly had to beg for an upgrade which we expected on arrival as gold members, did end up getting though, along with free welcome drinks which is served by receptionist and sitting in check in area not very relaxing as people coming and going cold and noisy. Room was very arty, loved the extra art along corridors bright and cheery, even had some nice art books to read in our room, loved the extra treat biscuits to go with our tea. Room was basically standard with walk through interconnected door to other room done up with two chairs instead of a bed, so double everything else, bed area was extremely small (only a double) and hard to walk around, but very comfortable and cosy. Shower was very tiny triangle shaped hard to wash yourself in, however great hot and full pressure, overall good for a night but felt average and would not stay again.

We spent 3 nights at the hotel which I had booked largely on the basis of the Mercure brand.
The room we had (which seemed a very typical one) was very small, with a very small balcony (wouldn't accommodate more than two).
Breakfast was not the usual buffet: you ordered what you wanted at a counter next to reception, and they brought you the food.
Nothing wrong with that, in principle, but we could see orders at the pass waiting for waiter service - waiting too long.
By the time we were served the food & drinks were just tepid!
Positive note: Free parking.
However, I would not book here again when next visiting Bendigo (great town!).
