We stayed for two nights in a private queen room which was spacious, had a ceiling fan, had patio door to outside, comfy bed and clean linen. The hostel has a really laid back feel and the clientele is young and old and from all round the world. There is a great kitchen and communal areas and ducted air con throughout the building. There are three bathrooms which were very clean and have hot, high pressure showers. There was no late night noise at all during our stay. This place is a great alternative to a motel and less than half price.

Great location, there is everything you might need - laundry, kitchen, dining and living room, nice garden. I saw a few pish bikes there too, not sure they were for guests or not though. The hostel was clean, spacious, the common areas smelled nice, and the bed was very comfy.

The check-in was a bit tricky because there was no reception and the phone number given was just telling me that everything had to be done via booking.com. Although they replied back to me quite quickly, so I could get in after a few minutes to leave my bag there as I had arrived before check-in times. I received my room details later on via text message. One thing that also need to be mention is to be aware if you choose garden view room, the curtains have to be closed otherwise people in the garden can see you (no intimacy). The garden room is very spacious, it would be great a small cupboard to be placed there. ☺

This was my second stay at Bendigo Backpackers, and it is still the best stay for the budget. More like a family home than a hostel, I had a double bed and bedroom to myself, and was easily able to access toilet and shower when I wanted too. The kitchen was clean and functional, and the loungeroom was comfortable.

Very central to Bendigo CBD, and off-street parking was a big help.

Had work in Bendigo on the Friday, decided to stay for the weekend.
PIN to get in the front door, which is changed regularly, then a PIN for your room makes the place feel very secure.
Bedrooms were larger than I expected. My room (Room 1) was huge.
Place was spotless and kitchen very well equipped.
Rear courtyard an excellent feature too.
And Bendigo CBD was less than 500 metres away.

Friendly environment and good menace from the owner. The room is big enough for a couple, very clean, quiet place and easy to walk down the city centre.
Parking spot at the front and by the look on the street it’s very safe.
Highly recommended, the bed was comfy.
No air conditioning but they have a wall fun that does help a little bit. During the day the room can be hot if it’s hot outside but was cool over night. Thank you

Fabulous place to stay. Clean, neat, warm. Spacious kitchen and shared facilities with everything you'd need. Large quiet bedroom. No dorm rooms so not many people to share bathrooms with. No fuss entry and exit using codes. Would recommend.

After booking the room months in advance through the previous owner. I was informed by Daryl (recent new owner) that he'd decided to increase the price per bed. Knowing that we'd never get accommodation elsewhere in bendigo during the Groovin The Moo music festival weekend, we sucked up the price rise. The new owner has absolutely no communication, social or business skills. His phone manner is deplorable to say the least and if he wants to continue running a successful business he seriously needs to consider the way he handles customer relations.

Upon arrival we discovered that his unpredictable nature transferred into real life and he had absolutely no idea in conducting business transactions. He refused to take payment via credit card, insisting we pay only in cash, even though we said we didnt have enough and even brought up the various very unpleasant phone conversations that we'd had with him in regards to the price increase.

RE: the rooms, we were 1st put into a 6 bed dorm (there were 5 of us) with no heating (bendigo is freezing in May) after being told the place is fully booked with no room for movement. He came back into our room shortly after and moved us (go figure) to a 5 bed doorm with heating. The beds were fairly stock standard for a backpackers, however the $50 per night price for each, is not!!
The bathroom & toilet were grubby and needed a good scrub and again, if the owner wants to charge such high rates he should consider at least providing guests with mould free bathrooms.

Both nights while we were out and about in town we coincidentally (????) saw him lurking about. On the Sunday morning we left very early so as to avoid any further conversations with him.

For the price we paid collectively, we could have gotten a double room at a hotel in town rather than having to deal with the crazy owner.
Do not waste your time staying here.

The Bendigo Backpackers changed hands about 5 weeks ago according to the new owner. All I can say is that I will be avoiding that place at all costs. The new owner was unstable to say the least. My work colleague and I were the only people in an 8-bed dorm room (only one other backpacker was there the night we stayed and he stayed in another room). At about 11pm, the owner started banging heavily on the door (which was locked, thank god) screaming and swearing at us to turn off the light. When I told him that we would, he launched into a tirade and called me all sorts of names as he thought I was being "smart" to him. He proceeded to kick the door repeatedly (there were dints in it the next morning) and made death threats towards us, telling us the moment anyone steps through the door is the day they regret they were ever born. As a young female, I was honestly frightened by this sudden and uncalled-for outburst of rage. And it was at this point that I dialled 000 and held my phone in my hand in case the door gave way. He eventually went away and I made sure we were up as early as possible to avoid him. However, as we were packing the next morning, he stormed into the room this time banging his fist against the wall and continued to swear and scream at me, for no apparent reason other than our light was on the night before. I can honestly say I was completely terrified and ran out of the place only stopping to drop the key on the kitchen table. It was by far the worst experience I have ever had in a hostel/backpackers, and it is absolutely ridiculous that someone paying $30 a night is nearly forced to call the police because they fear for their own safety.

Can relate to Teresa M's comments after having a similar experience. I also was confronted with a rude and unprofessional host who raised his voice at me and was not very understanding at all. I wouldn't even bother with this hostel, there are so many more professional and friendly establishments in Bendigo.

Things have certainly changed at Bendigo Backpackers, and NOT for the better. I made a booking through booking.com for Sat 5 Nov 2011 for myself (a 67-y-o woman) and my 13-y-o granddaughter back in September. I rang on 3 Nov and Graham told me he had never received my booking. He shouted and swore and told me that booking.com was 'a load of [--]'. I rang customer service at booking.com and they confirmed a) that I had made the booking and b) that they had received an e-mail from Graham confirming that he had received the booking. Long story short, my granddaughter and I arrived on 5 Nov to find the smoke alarm blaring throughout the house. Graham shouted and swore at me again, this time in front of my 13-y-o granddaughter, and accused me of 'sabotaging' his alarm system. I told him I did not smoke and had not done anything to his alarm system he called me a liar. He continued shouting and swearing at us until my granddaughter (who was terrified) ran out of the house in tears. We moved to a motel and will never go back to Bendigo Backpackers, and I would advise others not to patronise it either.
