We stayed one night only , Room 6 in Hermitage House , after a day at the Bendigo Art gallery. Clean and cosy , with an outdoor table and chair ( too cold in winter) numerous rooms adjoined a delightful lounge with a gas fire, a well stocked kitchen with microwave, Nespresso machine, cups etc..
We had a Wine presentation, complimentary for in house guests at 4pm, very personal with just the two of us! Purchased their Sangiovese, to bring home and enjoy. Thoroughly enjoyed my birthday mid week trip!

We stayed in Bendigo during the 'Elvis Gold rush', and found that finding decent accommodation at a reasonable price was a big ask. That's how we ended up at Balgownie Estate, where we secured an excellent room in 'The Homestead': large room incl en suite with two basins, strong wifi, comfy queen bed, nice view. But that was not the end of our expenses. Guests here are able to taste a large range of the estate's wines for free, and we took the challenge! We liked a lot of what we tried, and walked out of the Tasting Room with close to a box of wine. The other issue with Balgownie Estate is that it's 15 min drive to downtown Bendigo, so that once you have booked in you tend to stay. From what we could see there are not a lot of alternative eateries in the local area, so you are pretty well obliged to eat at their restaurant too. This we did - we thought our meals excellent, but at $70/head for 2 courses, $80/head for 3, plus beverages, it left very little change from $200. As things turned out, think it would have been much cheaper to stay in one of the much more expensive hotels in downtown Bendigo!

We stayed a night in a Deluxe Room in Hermitage House. The room was huge, as was the bathroom, and had expansive views out over the vineyards, as well as some of the glamping tents in among the eucalypts and passing kangaroos at dusk. Our stay included a free wine tasting at the cellar door, covering most of Balgownie's extensive range. We also dined in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast - both of which were very good. A relaxing and enjoyable stay.

I should have read the reviews more closely but I did not. I booked a one night stay in a bell tent advertised as a “glamping experience” for our Wedding Anniversary thinking it might be very special at $288
It’s not glamping, it’s a tent with a bed in it
Our view from the front was a dead wood pile and we had to carry the uncomfortable chairs out of the tent onto the deck to sit outside
The toilet is a hired porta loo toilet shower combination which is shared with another tent and was awful. A walk to these “facilities” during the night requires shoes due to the gravel path
The cheese board I pre ordered was sparse and not at all appealing.
This was an experience to remember for all the wrong reasons unfortunately

Thank you for taking the time to review Balgownie Bendigo. We are disappointed that your experience did not match your expectations. We take all feedback very seriously as it helps us continuously improve our offering. In line with this, we have scheduled significant upgrades to our bathroom facilities for Winter.

We highly recommend the restaurant offerings and reasonably priced at 85$ pp for 3 courses.

The tents were clean and comfortable. The AC unit was a welcome addition during our hot trip. The 2.5km walk around the winery was a nice way to finish off the evening.

Unfortunately the let down was close proximity of tents and noisey neighbours. We politely spoke with them to no avail and the reception staff member neither acknowledged, validated or dealing with the issue.

This is for the meal only. Have not been here for a long time, covid etc, so were interested to see what it was like. Service was very good, 5 of us opted for chefs meal @$80 per head. We had a number of starters and sides which were both interesting and tasty. Each of the starters came with servings for 5. However for the main meals, we were offered fish, steak duck , and it was suggested we had the duck and steak. We had two plates plus sides, one larger piece of steak cut in 4, and a side of duckling -tasty but not very big . However overall it was a good meal

We stayed for 2 nights and wished we could have stayed longer!

My husband, our son and I thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We stayed in Cottage 1 consisting of one queen bed and a sofa bed. Both beds were super comfortable. The bathroom/toilet is huge and includes a spa bath tub.

As soon as you enter the cottage, you can feel and smell the cleanliness of the place.

The quiet open space around the winery setting was so nice and provided great walks . The views, sunset and wildlife were all superb!

Dinner was very good in the restaurant with very well prepared food.

Service on the estate overall was great.

Would we stay here again? ABSOLUTELY!! Can't wait to return :)

Wow - we are thrilled to get your feedback. You have been very kind. Bendigo is a beautiful property, and while our glamping tends to be the popular choice, it's so wonderful to hear about your cottage experience. Don't forget to like us on our socials, and if you could tag us in any posts you got of amazing sunsets, food and scenery, we would appreciate it. See you again soon!

We booked in for lunch in the dining area and selected two course for $60 pp. Food was quite good but small servings and looking at the dining room the outside seating looked just as good. Service was very good. I just think that a wine included in the menu price would have been nice or free tastings afterwards in the cellar door. Just a small touch.

Hi Sue, thank you so much for your review and for your suggestions. Our recommendation is, if you have prior opportunity, try a wine tasting first, and then you will have some inspiration for the wine/s you may like to accompany with your restaurant meal.

Quiet and blissful location overlooking the winery being 15-20mins away from the city centre. We liked the balance and mix of homestead and glamping without feeling over commercialised. Great to have the community kitchen which was clean and well equipped. Seeing the family of kangaroos, bird wildlife, winery with the solar panels farm and wind mills on the side was a nice touch. We stayed at the Homestead Queen which was nice, spacious and warm. We may try glamping next time!

Book here for romantic birthday surprised. Checked in by Amy and was asked for $100 deposit on room which you don’t find out this will occur till after you book.

Mention we won’t be using any of the mini bar, still had to pay it, with a up to 10 day release back, such a very old fashioned way of dealing with things, especially when Booking.com have all your details if anything goes wrong, so please be prepared to pay $100 more!

The accommodation was quiet and comfortable, apart from the very tired sofa with a sloppy old nylon cover badly draped over it, very uncomfortable to sit on and definitely not the chairs duplicated in the photos when booking

Bed was quite comfy but we were shocked by the uncleanliness of the bathroom, long hairs on floor and in the sink. We had to wash spa bath before use and poor excuse of shower pressure.

When we had to move bed to get to the one plug behind the bed head, there was so much dust, this all put a dampener on the whole unromantic experience.

When I showed Amy on check out, the only offer was a free bottle of wine, that’s if, as she mentioned “she was able to find one in the winery.!!! “ When I declined because we don’t drink wine, there was no other offer.
No free coffee or breakfast breakfast, just your receipt of $172 for your one night disappointing stay.

We were very underwhelmed and disappointed by the experience

I was looking at booking one of the tents options but with shared bathrooms during COVID? and after seeing now, how close they are situated to each other, we won’t be rushing back anytime soon to this overpriced and overrated accommodation.
