Detailed Reviews
This is my first time here at the Sovereign Hill Hotel and from my arrival my expectations of it were good. The reception staff were very warm and friendly and always there to help with questions. Finding our room was a little trickier though as they didn’t really mention how to access the building even after giving us a map. We stayed in the governors room and while it was very clean and comfortable, was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. The shower was strong and hot and the bed very comfortable. My only negatives really was the power points. None were in a convenient or safe location to boil the kettle and you can hear people coming and going the building.. While there’s no dining facilities on site you’re not far from some good restaurants. Would I come here again? Yes. Would I look for larger optioned room, probably.

Stayed here for two nights as a family of 4 whilst visiting Sovereign Hill. The room was spacious and the beds comfortable. The kids loves the size of the shower and the water pressure (and so did their parents). We also loved the convenience of being right next door to the attractions and with out own entrance which made coming and going a treat. I can see us returning to visit Sovereign Hill again (maybe in winter) and we will be looking at staying here again!

We stayed in one of the family rooms which had a large double bed and a set of bunks. As you can only book by calling them, I asked for a family room for 2 adults, 2 kids. The top bunk wasn't made up which was a bit of a hassle as it's quite high and we had booked 2 kids. The room also had a decent sized fridge and tea and coffee making facilities but no microwave or other kitchen facilities. The beds were comfortable. The hotel is quite a long way from anything except Sovereign Hill so it was a bit disappointing that there were no food options at the hotel. They have a buffet breakfast but it only runs during Victorian school holidays. If you arrive by train like we did, and don't have a car, make sure you pick up some breakfast options before you go, as there is nothing until Sovereign Hill opens at 10am. It would be good if they could consider having breakfast packs available, even to purchase, plus basic cutlery and crockery in the rooms so people are able to have breakfast. There was no dinner options either so we just ordered UberEats. Good things are there were biscuits and hot chocolate powder in the rooms, so at least we had something, but there were only 3 biscuits for 4 people and the tiny carton of UHT milk in the fridge doesn't go far.
My husband had to walk back into Ballerat to get extra supplies.
The good thing is it's very close to Sovereign Hill and you can ask at reception for a card so you can go back and forth during your day there. Doesn't get you in any earlier, but it's a short walk to go book the photo experience and mine tour if you want to ensure you get to do those.
We decided to stay there because we wouldn't have a car and Sovereign Hill was the main purpose of our visit, but the lack of food options nearby made it not so good.

Our family (2 adults and 2 children) stayed here for a weekend getaway as we had booked tickets to Sovereign Hill. Whilst the location to Sovereign Hill was convenient, our stay was anything but pleasant.
Firstly, the insulation in the hotel room is very poor. As the family units of the hotel are double storey, we were placed in a ground floor room towards the back. The noise coming through from upstairs was terrible. Crash, bang, people running around, talking, slamming doors on the upstairs floor kept us all awake until the early hours of the morning.
Second, there were bull ants on the bathroom floor. My son was too scared to use the toliet by the Saturday night due to the ants crawling around.
Third, the toliet was leaking. We had to place a few towels down to stop the water running throughout the bathroom floor. The hotel is in dire need of maintenance.
Upon bringing this to the attention of hotel staff, the young lady at reception offered nothing more than an “ oh okay then”. customer service is also in dire needs of some addressing. He
Overall, our experience at this hotel was very poor. I wouldn’t recommend staying here unless being a 30 second drive to Sovereign Hill is paramount. There are far superior hotels and motels in Ballarat to stay in.

We used a travel auction voucher & were very happy with our 2 day stay. Room was comfy, very clean & a good size..I suspect it might be quite cold in winter. Buffet breakfast was acceptible although the cooked stuff was not hot which is a bit of a concern. The staff both in restaurant & reception were friendly & helpful..thank you!

The Governor’s room was a nice size with lovely windows overlooking the lawn and flower beds. The ensuite was also a good size with excellent natural light.
Inexplicably we had two consecutive days when the room service did not remove used coffee cups. The linen was all changed and the room made up nicely. On day one, we rang reception to mention the oversight of cup replacement and a staffer came with clean cups but did not remove the used ones. To our disbelief the same issue occurred the next day.
The tone of the lady was that we were a nuisance seeking clean coffee cups. Thankfully the next day was a man who was very apologetic and took the used cups with him when bringing clean ones.
I am happy to pay 💰 for something different but I have basic expectations with the service, which certainly were not met on our visit.
Loved Ballarat, enjoyed sovereign hill but some staff need a little bit more training in room service.

This hotel exceeded our expectations. The colonial room was one of the largest we’ve stayed in, lots of space for a family of 4 with king bed plus bunks. The air conditioning works really well and cooled our room quickly on a hot day. All the amenities were modern, clean and well maintained. It was incredibly quiet overnight, no street noise and we didn’t hear any other guests.
Parking is easy and the breakfast room is very close to the room. There’s lots of open space around for the kids to play. There’s also a bbq area that would be handy for a longer stay
During check-in we were asked to book a time for breakfast because the hotel was busy. We selected the last time slot (9am) and I’d suggest that the buffet area was too small for the number of diners at that time, it was really crowded. Unfortunately many of the breakfast options ran out and were not replenished, including the coffee. The available options were delicious.
I’d definitely stay here again. Consider contacting the hotel directly for the best deal on a room with breakfast included.

At bit hit and miss here. On the plus side, the hotel is part of the Sovereign Hill Historic precinct with a private gate to get into and out of the precinct. Staff are pleasant and helpful. The hotel is a former garrison. Rooms are pleasant, with breakfast included. On the negative side our room had lights that didn’t work, a toilet cistern that ran incessantly. The hotel Wi-Fi was down for the entire period of our stay. If you are arriving using a GPS, your device will not take to to the hotel, and that is true for Tomtom and Google maps. Overall score7/10.

It was my second stay at the Sovereign Hill Hotel, I was warmly welcomed, but they had forgot to provide my room with twin beds, however this was rectified by adding a roll in and I enjoyed chatting to the staff while they set it up.
The room was well equipped and clean, but a little dated. The accommodation is set in several buildings and feels like a 1800s township. We went to Aura at Sovereign Hill and it was great to be able to access the show through a private gate.
The included buffet breakfast was tasty and plentiful.
If you're going to Sovereign Hill, it's a great place to stay.

i love sovereign hill and was excited to be staying there, but that didnt last long. The reception staff could do with a course on having a friendlier disposition and the girl we encountered was quite abrupt and unwelcoming. The room had a funky musty smell we opened the windows but it didnt go away and later that evening it got to be so irritating and the thought of sleeping all night with the smell pushed us to decide to leave and drive through the night home to adelaide. We emailed them about it the next day but have had no response at all.

Hi, sorry for the late answer on this, but I believe it depends on the accommodation package you purchase. We booked our package as part of the Winter Wonderlights and it included entry to Sovereign Hill. Cheers.
I am not sure about disabled rooms but the hotel has a few steps in various areas A simple call would satisfy that question. It is about 150 Meters from the main buildings to the access to Sovereign Hill. It is down a sloping path and then opens into a sloping road going downhill which is lined by several buildings in the complex which is also sloping. The inbound journey is therefore easy, but the return journey would perhaps be difficult for a disabled person unless they have a motorised chair.
Hello,
If you book day entry tickets with your accommodation, your day entry will be valid for each day of your stay (the date of check in to the date of check out).
Comfort Inn Sovereign Hill is situated just next to Sovereign Hill.
To confirm your booking arrangements, please contact Comfort Inn Sovereign Hill via comfortinn@ sovereignhill. com .au (remove the spaces from the email address before sending)
Hi Jenny,
I think your referring to the getaway package for 2 adults which includes 1 night's accommodation, 2 days entry into sovereign hill and the gold museum, a 2 course dinner followed by the sound and light show, and a buffet breakfast is priced at $470 per couple. If your wanting a second nights accommodation the price per room for 2 adults would be $179 including a buffet breakfast.
There is no dinner the second night, you can only have the set menu dinner on the night your doing the show.
The total cost for 2 couples to do the getaway package and stay an extra night would be $1298
Entry is included in your package and can be used for the duration of your stay with us.
Kind Regards
Sally
