#23 of 33 hotels in Ballarat
Welcome to Ansonia on Lydiard, A small hotel set within a historic building in which the land on which the AnsoniA is built was sold at the first sale of Ballarat land in August 1852. The property at the time had frontages to both Lydiard and Armstrong Street and had been developed as a stables and timber building housing a Coach Factory facing Armstrong street. The two-story section facing Lydiard Street was developed in 1868/9 by Dr James Steward and is listed as having been occupied by Furnvival Chambers and architects Fox and Oakden. The building as it was then housed a bank as well as other commercial investment offices and remained such until the late 1990’s when the property underwent major renovations and became the AnsoniA boutique hotel. The renovation included joining the two buildings by a glass room and buffing out the cobblestones of the laneway which it was before. Hence the introduction of the central Atrium with hotel rooms either side. Ansonia now features 19 guest rooms set in a unique and tranquil setting. Our property is quiet and charming with a surprise around every corner. You can relax in our guest lounge and cosy up in front of the open fire on those cold Ballarat days or stay indoors and enjoy the sun-filled atrium or escape to one of our courtyards. Ansonia is perfect for small intimate private functions or social gatherings.

We stayed here during the photo festival and it was perfect. Perfect location as you can walk everywhere. There aren’t car parks but it’s so cheap to pay for on street parking while there or you could come via train as it’s all within walking distance. It is so welcoming and you feel like it really is a home away from home. We had a wonderful family break together and this hotel was a large part of how much we enjoyed this beautiful city.

This hotel is in the centre of it all, although a nice hotel we would not stay there again. we stayed in room #4, the room was very cold, we had the heating as high as it would go but the room was still cold. There are pigeons that sit on the out side window ledge and make noise all night

Great location: walking distance to Craig's, Oscar's, train station, shops, gallery. Basic but very comfortable room in old hotel. Loved the bath. Some nice places to sit and contemplate/read. Breakfast was good.

Stayed on a mini-break for 2019/2020 NYE and night after that prior to a visit to Beaufort. Beautifully refurbished historic site in quite location but central with lots of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes within easy 100-500 m walking range. Fabulous common lounge (very 1930's feel and look) area with tea/coffee facilities, books, games and sofas which we took advantage of when we played Trivial Pursuit with our 2 travelling companions after dinner and drinks on the 2nd night. Great history and comfortable rooms which are well kept and very clean. Manager Cameron was very professional, efficient, friendly and helpful and contributed further to our stay being a very pleasant experience, which we will almost certainly repeat in the future.

Room Tip: You may hear the odd church bell on the 2nd floor but otherwise all pretty quite.

Terrific location in the CBD and a short walk from the train station. The stairs might cause difficulties for older people, those with a disability etc. Large comfortable rooms, that are in need of a paint. This is an historic building, so some quirks are expected. But the peeling paint needs to be addressed.
