Ballarat's second oldest hotel, the original George Hotel building was erected in 1854. The George Hotel is located in what is known as one of Australia's most important historical streets and is opposite the Art Gallery of Ballarat, walking distance from Ballarat's Visitor Information Centre and a few doors down from the local cinemas. Over the past 3 years the hotel has undergone a major refurbishment to bring its hotel style rooms, including some apartment style accommodation, to a four and half star standard. The hotel is now also home to the Ballarat RSL with memorabilia displayed within the hotel. Newly refurbished bars and dining areas now operate seven days and at the rear is a new upmarket lounge which operates weekends for guests and discerning patrons with strict standards. One of Ballarat's most popular meeting places, The Lane offers a street cafe and alfresco dining, alongside the Lane Restaurant (popular with foodies) and Heritage Bar & Restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week.

Loved our two night stay in suite15 great value for money with fully equipped kitchen and large lounge area. Breakfast downstairs was good value but chilly despite fire crackling away. This is one place we would definitely re visit on our next trip to beautiful Ballarat

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed 3 nights over the Queens Birthday Weekend. The room was great. Spacious, clean, modern, comfy bed & good heating, would happily stay in this room again. The staff were great and helpful. Had a meal in the restaurant and that was very nice. Risotto was good, nice size gave me plenty of room to eat the Eton Mess which was yummy. My husband had the Nicoise Salad and that was nice as well. We were both very happy with this hotel and agree that next time we go back this is where we will stay. The hotel is in a great position in the middle of the town. The one small thing I could say against it was that we arrived at night and the parking for the hotel needs some lighting. Would recommend to anyone wishing to stay in Ballarat

Visited the George for lunch, lovely décor, lovely staff and adequate pub menu available for a Sunday Having ordered our meals and enjoying a pre lunch drink I was disappointed to find when a couple with a pit bull X dog arrived they were sat at the next table Now I may be a bit old fashioned but I prefer to eat with humans and was not expecting a dog in the dining room It was the only dining area open, the roof was closed and the walls too so it was not an "outdoors" situation Afraid dining with animals is not my style and if its not yours too you may wish to dine elsewhere

Thank you for reviewing The George Hotel and The Lane cafe. We do understand your comments in regards to pets being able to be present in The Lane Cafe and we do aware this will not be to everyone's liking. We don't usually get many pets to come in and dine but on the odd occasion, we do welcome them. We are sorry to hear this policy made your visit uncomfortable and your concerns will be passed on for consideration. Kind Regards The George Team

Loved everything about The George... From Reception, restaurant and those that keep this such a very clean hotel, rooms great attention to detail, lovely staff all round. Nothing to fault...thick bath towels, quality linen, wonderful modern shower, great water warmth. Chose the one bedroom suite, didn’t use all the amenities in the room but gave us a roomy feel...just loved the hotel. Big serves in the restaurant, loved my cocktail, such very friendly staff. Would absolutely go back to The George, thanks for a great stay.

Quality Inn The George Hotel Ballarat is located in Lydiard Street, one of Australia's most intact Victorian-era streetscapes. The Quality Inn George Hotel is one of Ballarat's most luxurious hotal properties. The rooms are well set-up and the housekeeping is up to standard. It's well worth making your base here, in the heart of this historic gold mining city.

The George Hotel has been part of the social fabric of Ballarat since 1854. It was built at the height of the Great Australian Gold Rush. The hotel even played a part in the suppression of the Eureka Stockade. The facilities have been modernized recently, and it's a pleasant place to stay. The George is in historic Lydiard Street, over the road from the superb Art Gallery of Ballarat. The Lane Cafe is a good place for a drink and a meal.

Visited the George Hotel on Wednesday evening for a meal with friends. No table service. Disappointed that the table beside us got table service but we weren't offered any type of table service. Last drinks were not called, and when approached the bar was told that the tills had been closed this being 9.15pm. Staff were nowhere to be found at times when we were replenishing our drinks. The staff member did after I expressed my disappointment at the service we had received, did provide drinks as long as we paid cash. No complaints re the food. Service was atrocious, will not return to this hotel.
