Ballarat's second oldest hotel, the original George Hotel building was erected in 1854. The George Hotel is located in what is known as one of Australia's most important historical streets and is opposite the Art Gallery of Ballarat, walking distance from Ballarat's Visitor Information Centre and a few doors down from the local cinemas. Over the past 3 years the hotel has undergone a major refurbishment to bring its hotel style rooms, including some apartment style accommodation, to a four and half star standard. The hotel is now also home to the Ballarat RSL with memorabilia displayed within the hotel. Newly refurbished bars and dining areas now operate seven days and at the rear is a new upmarket lounge which operates weekends for guests and discerning patrons with strict standards. One of Ballarat's most popular meeting places, The Lane offers a street cafe and alfresco dining, alongside the Lane Restaurant (popular with foodies) and Heritage Bar & Restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week.

Booked this for my mum and aunty and they loved it. The beds were comfy and warm (electric blankets) and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. As 2 senior women who don't travel a lot on their own, the staff really made them feel welcome and safe. A great location too!

Lovely old hotel that has been renovated. Guest rooms were very comfortable. Only thing missing was a hair dryer. All the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and the food in the dining area was excellent but there are also many other dining options within a short walk away. We would happily stay here again.

The room we were allocated was clean and spacious and we had a great night sleep.
The restaurant, whilst more a hotel style was warm and cosy and we shared the mussels which were delicious.
Highly recommend a visit to the George Hotel in Ballarat.

Good experience here. No worries with check in or out-I did have to leave at 4.30am. It is within a 5-10 minute walk to the main bus/train station. Plenty of restaurants and bars nearby too and some great old architecture. My room was very quiet and well appointed; comfy king size bed, electric blanket and good aircon. The shower was a bit of a tight fit but fine. Sufficient hanging space in the wardrobe, and there was a toaster, kettle , plate, cups and some cutlery. Microwave is small but there are no cooking utensils or microwave bowls etc provided. Work desk with good lighting for a laptop and there’s free wifi. Daily room service too, bed made, bathroom cleaned nicely. Thank you. I had a quiet room too which apparently is worth asking for depending on the night club. I never heard it. I’d definitely be back again.

We stayed here overnight after the Nitro Circus at the showgrounds. It was a little confusing when I checked in as when I saw the sign saying "Quality Hotel" I just assumed that it was The George, but in fact it was the reception for the Heritage Hotel. No matter, they are both run by the same company and the girl from the George came down quickly and set me straight. She escorted me to the correct reception and booked us in. The George is an older Hotel that has been done up and the old hotel and rooms have been renovated and re-decorated to very nice rooms. Security is good as there are locked doors to keep out anyone not staying as a guest. We were on level 1 so we could hear some noise from downstairs but it was not loud enough to be a bother. Bed was comfortable and the room facitilities were of a good standard. Parking was in a private carpark for guests only and accessed from the street behind the hotel. Parking was a little confusing, but easy to find once you look at the map that reception gave me. I would definitely stay here again as the location is right in the heart of Ballarat and there was no need for the car when we wanted a feed. I have only scopred a 4 becasue its a pub rather than a Motel.

Dear Radarz, Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are absolutely delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. We do understand that having both properties directly next door to each other, with the same Quality Hotel franchise may seem a little confusing at first. But as you so kindly mentioned we do run both receptions and are always a quick moment away. We do our best to make sure our security is adequate being that we are also a venue and pub, to ease our guests worry. We are glad the map our reception staff help clear up confusion with our parking location. As the CBD is limited on space this was our option of location where we were able to offer parking for our guests. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Kind Regards Emma

Visited the George Hotel on Wednesday evening for a meal with friends.
No table service. Disappointed that the table beside us got table service but we weren't offered any type of table service.
Last drinks were not called, and when approached the bar was told that the tills had been closed this being 9.15pm.
Staff were nowhere to be found at times when we were replenishing our drinks.
The staff member did after I expressed my disappointment at the service we had received, did provide drinks as long as we paid cash.
No complaints re the food.
Service was atrocious, will not return to this hotel.

This hotel has an excellent location in the centre of Ballarat. It was close to many great food options, and a short walk to the train station, the room itself was spacious, clean and comfortable. There is free parking available on site, but it is a little tricky to find. We really have only one complaint and that was about the single elevator in the property. It smelled rancid. The air in it was so bad that we were holding our breath to stop from gagging and throwing up. We only made the mistake of getting it in the once, after that we stuck to the stairs (including with luggage on the way out). No idea what caused the smell, but they really need to work out how to make it bearable in there. Otherwise, great place to stay.

Dear BelRae, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are pleased to hear you were able to take up the opportunity of our amazing location to explore our surrounding local atmosphere. We are very privileged to have such a great location here in the centre of Ballarat. We do understand your concerns regarding the parking facilities, as it is a narrow lane way due to limited space in CBD area it can be a little tricky to navigate ( we do provide directions and maps upon arrival but we do understand your concerns). You may be pleased to hear that we are currently looking at possibilities and ways, to further prevent and eliminate the smell travelling up in our lifts from the cellar below. We understand completely your complaint regarding this issue and we do apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused during your stay. We do hope to see you again in the near future. Kind Regards Emma Gleadhill Reception Team.

Us Melbournians escaped for a few days in Ballarat and weren’t disappointed. Whilst I love the history and architecture, The George staff and surrounds treated us to a special relaxing three night stay. From the reception, to bar staff and wait staff, we were made to feel special. Our room was comfortable with everything we needed and the renovated bathroom was straight from a magazine.

Loved our two night stay in suite15 great value for money with fully equipped kitchen and large lounge area. Breakfast downstairs was good value but chilly despite fire crackling away. This is one place we would definitely re visit on our next trip to beautiful Ballarat

Hello
Yes there is a lift. We stayed at The George Hotel last December and our room was very quiet. There was a Christmas Party in a function room, but we heard no noise whatsoever in our room. I would highly recommend the George. The staff are very friendly so I would recommend contacting them beforehand to let them know your requirements. Have a lovely time.
Cheers
I am not aware of a pool at the George Hotel.
The George is situated in Ballarat's CBD with the arts, shopping, transport, entertainment and dining all within walking distance of our front door!
