The owner and his father were very welcoming- What great people who are passionate about their Gaol. Nothing was too much trouble. Free Wifi, great spaces within the grounds and ... haha obviously..... secure. A novel and different thing to do - love the common areas, and nooks and crannies around the grounds.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 1 night and we were so impressed with how welcoming our host James was. Gave us so much information on what to do during our quick visit and gave us some background info on the gaol! Really glad we found this little treasure.

Stayed here for one night as part of an organised tour in September 2016. We arrived and dropped our bags off in the rooms and were then given a tour by James. He's obviously passionate about the place after all the time, money and effort that his family has spent to rennovate and get the gaol up and running as...

Though we only stayed one night, it had a lasting positive impression. The owners were very welcoming, and gave us a mini-tour when we got there, as well as pointing out all the local attractions on an annotated map. Also, the business supports marriage equality, so it is good to know that it is queer-friendly :)

My boyfriend and I were so down when we arrived in the Old Mount Gambier Goal. The hotel had been booked in the last minute by the campervan's agency after several break down on my road trip. The owner Mel was very kind with us, she did all her best to put back the smile on ours faces or to...

Recent visit to mount gambier and got a chance to explore and live in this old gaol, and happy to say that I spend one night there, accomodation with a difference! Not a usual kind of motel but worth visiting and spending a night!

I've stayed in The Jail for about 1.5 weeks and it is a good place to connect with a part of Mount Gambier's history, and also a good starting point to explore the surroundings and some of the highlights like the Blue Lake (jogging around it is really fun-there are a number of lookouts around the lake), Mt Shank (very...

Recently stayed at the Mt Gambier Gaol for 1 night and really enjoyed the experience as something different than your usual type of motel accommodation. Made to feel very welcome and it was interesting to explore and be told of the history of the building. Lounge room is very inviting and the kitchen had all the necessary items for cooking....

A beautiful old gaol renovated by a friendly and interesting couple with a fabulous family connection. We stayed in room 20; a double room with its own toilet and the shower next door. The room is a nice size with funky decor; is immaculately clean and comes with furry throw, heated blankets and a heater on a timer in case...

Old prison turned into a hostel, what a great idea. Staff is so nice and always ready to help. They really want you to enjoy your stay. There are little things such as bath mat in shower and lots of blankets everywhere to make your stay better. Atmosphere in this hostel is very special and it has interesting history. Definitely...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our gaol journey all began with a vision to turn an old debilitated building into a vibrant community asset. We originally hoped to create a new atmosphere that was warm, inviting and both community and family focused. We, along with our two young boys, own and run our family business; we are blessed with the ongoing assistance of our fabulous staff and wonderful family. We have much love for the old building, her history and our spectacular Limestone Coast region and for this reason have opted to remain an independent accommodation provider. We love to travel, enjoy new experiences and meet refreshing people; running the old gaol is allowing us as parents to raise our sons in a beautiful part of Australia whilst still meeting amazing guests from all over the world. Every day we see new faces, are moved and excited by guest’s travel adventures whilst living in an old English prison! We are a young business with many more fun ideas and improvements yet to unveil. We have spent the last three years creating and establishing our business. We are now excited to move onto further promoting who we are and what we have to offer! The Old Mount Gambier Gaol was a functioning 'English Prison' from 1866 to 1994.In 2010 we opened the gaol doors for a new venture. We had a vision to create a place where our community could relax and enjoy various events and where travelers could combine a comfortable stay with a unique experience. Almost three years later we are still pursuing that dream. ... more   less
