A beautiful old gaol renovated by a friendly and interesting couple with a fabulous family connection. We stayed in room 20; a double room with its own toilet and the shower next door. The room is a nice size with funky decor; is immaculately clean and comes with furry throw, heated blankets and a heater on a timer in case... More

Old prison turned into a hostel, what a great idea. Staff is so nice and always ready to help. They really want you to enjoy your stay. There are little things such as bath mat in shower and lots of blankets everywhere to make your stay better. Atmosphere in this hostel is very special and it has interesting history. Definitely... During our recent road trip to Kangaroo Island we decided to stop over in Mount Gambier, there were 4 of us and we stayed at The Old Mount Gambier Gaol. It was an awesome experience and we can't speak highly enough of this place. James and Mel are easily the best hosts, they both went out of their way to... More

Come here on a top deck tour to spend the evening, place is quite interesting as James and his family has converted this place that was once a prison to a hotel. It's got history and well preserved. Quite the experience if you ever wanted to go to prison for one night knowing you could wall around on your own... More

Stayed here for 1 night and can't even start about how cool I think this place is. So much history, so well done up, the owners are so friendly and there's plenty to see in the area. Definitely one of my highlights of my trip in SA. Would stay here again and would recommend it to everyone.

My colleague and I stayed there while on a community speaking tour of the Limestone Coast. James is very friendly and helpful. He provided us with loads of information about the area and all was always available to answer any questions that we had.

You know a place is good when, months after you stayed there, you're still left with pleasant memories and a yearning to go back. My partner and I stayed for only one night as part of a long weekend camping around the South East. I decided that we'd spend one night somewhere nice (that didn't involve the tent), and when... Great experience from beginning to end! Kids loved playing cricket in the old yard and dressing up in the old uniforms. Very comfortable, and everything we needed. Easy walking distance to centre of town and the developed railway yards were a great place to burn off some energy! Owners were fantastic - a very memorable stay!

Stayed for 2 nights in the 3 bedroom wardens house. James was very helpful and informative about the history of the buildings. Very close to all the shops and restaurants. Plenty to see and do in and around Mount Gambier for the whole family. Will be back for sure.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our gaol journey all began with a vision to turn an old debilitated building into a vibrant community asset. We originally hoped to create a new atmosphere that was warm, inviting and both community and family focused. We, along with our two young boys, own and run our family business; we are blessed with the ongoing assistance of our fabulous staff and wonderful family. We have much love for the old building, her history and our spectacular Limestone Coast region and for this reason have opted to remain an independent accommodation provider. We love to travel, enjoy new experiences and meet refreshing people; running the old gaol is allowing us as parents to raise our sons in a beautiful part of Australia whilst still meeting amazing guests from all over the world. Every day we see new faces, are moved and excited by guest’s travel adventures whilst living in an old English prison! We are a young business with many more fun ideas and improvements yet to unveil. We have spent the last three years creating and establishing our business. We are now excited to move onto further promoting who we are and what we have to offer! The Old Mount Gambier Gaol was a functioning 'English Prison' from 1866 to 1994.In 2010 we opened the gaol doors for a new venture. We had a vision to create a place where our community could relax and enjoy various events and where travelers could combine a comfortable stay with a unique experience. Almost three years later we are still pursuing that dream. ... more   less
