Earlier this year, I stayed at Nightcap at the Federal Hotel for one night while visiting Mount Gambier. I did not have high expectations. Online reviews for this venue are decidedly mixed, with many criticising the noise level (this hotel is a part of the Federal Hotel, a pub that could be quite raucous on some days). Arriving at the hotel, the relatively dated building facade and reception did not inspire confidence. Still, I was pleasantly surprised to find a clean, modern, and reasonably commodious room (note: I booked the studio with two queen beds, which are somewhat larger at 25 square meters, do not book the cheapest queen studio rooms- some of those are very diminutive at just 10 square metres) with comfortable beds and decent bathrooms. There was a bit of noise, but it was neither intolerable nor exceedingly vexing.

However, the food on offer at the Federal Hotel is profusely mediocre. The beef schnitzel was chewy, devoid of flavour, and overcooked. Likewise, I also ordered a roast of the day, which included steamed beans, peas, broccoli, corn, pumpkin, potatoes, and carrots. This meal was again bland and unsatisfactory. The corn was overcooked, the broccoli was especially insipid (and not fresh), and the potatoes also lacked flavour; the other vegetables were unremarkable but not as poor. (On the other hand, the staff were friendly and courteous). Overall, I would recommend the hotel but would suggest dining somewhere else.

The hotel was clean and presentable upon arrival. The gentleman that served us at the bookings window was warm and friendly. The shower facilities were amazing and the bed was super comfy.

We went to the bistro here at the hotel for dinner and the service I could not fault. Angie was lovely, cheerful and extra apologetic when picking up our plates.

Unfortunately the food was below standard. I ordered a medium rare T-bone steak that came out well done and there was no salad dressing on my salad. My mother had the roast Beef. It was so tough and chewy it looked as though it has been boiled and then roasted. The roast was also paired with 2 baby potatoes one half of a carrot and a mountain of frozen beans and corn. I work for the company and at a pub in Adelaide and I'm very disappointed with the food only.

Very clean lodgings and cosy with everything we needed. Good location in the main street and well priced. Staff were very friendly and approachable. As per other reviews the rooms are a little noisy at times due to the traffic, definitely not unbearable and the hotel even provides ear buds if the noise gets too much

We held a function (family catch up) there last weekend and it more than met our needs with good value menu options and plenty of them, drinks at good prices and the accommodation whilst not top end, is more than adequate as the rooms are very clean and beds comfortable and right at the back door of the restaurant and bar. The hotel is located centrally to the town, close to the Woolworths supermarket and handy to the service station and pizza bar. Bar service to the tables was a little poor and clearing away the dishes a little slow, but overall, not a lot to complain about, the good certainly outweighed the bad (and it wasn't actually bad anyway).
Would happily recommend this hotel.

We booked this pub for a night while traveling through Mt Gambier. We really hit the jackpot. We stayed in a double pub room with two king single beds, which were firm and comfortable. Tea, coffee, milk and toiletries were provided and a breakfast pack is complimentary for direct bookings.
Downstairs in the bar, happy hour was running with $4 beers and house wines. As hotel guests were were entitled to 20% off meals, but the Two for Tuesday deal was even better. The house speciality is schnitzel and there are some thirty toppings to choose from. Servings are very generous, especially with the included bread and salad bar.
The staff are friendly and helpful and appear to enjoy their jobs. Great pub, highly recommended and would definitely stay again.

Very comfortable and economical. Room was spacious and the bed comfortable. A little noisy being on the main road, but ear plugs were supplied. Added bonus was a voucher for a free drink from the bar downstairs. Had dinner in the Dining Room - only complaint was the lack of vegetarian items on the menu. Free on site parking. Would be happy to stay here again.

Hi Jill. Thank you for your kind review. We are constantly looking at feedback from our customers, and making changes as we go. We recently had a menu change, due to supply issues, and items such as our Vegetarian Schnitzels have been increadibly hard to source. We will look to utilize the specials board to fill in some of the gaps moving forward, providing those additional options for customers! Cheers, Paul - Management

Went in here for evening meal and was amazed. The schnitzel menu I here was the best I've ever seen, in beef, chicken and vegan. Three different sizes, of which had the middle regular. It was big, with a good amount of salad and large amount of beautiful fries. Also was given free rein on a top salad bar. I had the Mexican version of schnitzel, beef which had the best to ayo sauce on top, then a beautiful guacamole, and jalapenos and corn chips. Cheap beer prices too added to make this a brilliant feed and night out.
