Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A splash of paint and a king sized bed has done nothing to warrant the price of these rooms. Original shower and box aircon which rattled. Small TV and very old cabinetry. Stained carpet and what looks like original light fittings

The motel is ideally located overlooking the city affording wonderful views. The room services are adequate for a budget motel. We were fortunate the motel was not busy so not bothered by noise of other guests. Good for an overnight stay if travelling through to Victoria.

Although this place has varying reviews and has a few quirks, it's a solid 4 stars in any book. The location is pretty hard to beat perched high on the side of the crater overlooking the town. It's a short stroll to the amazing Blue Lake and the views are breathtaking all round. Sure, not every room has a view, but you don't have to try hard to find the view. Our room had comfy beds and was very spacious. Some aspects were a bit dated and maybe the place could be better maintained, but overall the price was fair for what it is. Service was friendly and excellent. Wishing we were back there already!

Very over priced. I let reception know of problems in the room within minutes of entering. They couldn't care less.
Toilet and shower had not been cleaned properly, there was mould on the tiles in shower.
TV didn't work, there was a large iron scorch mark on the carpet. Coat hangers in wardrobe were broken. Bed cover was worn and dirty.
I will say that the view was great and there was a small complimentary bottle of water, 2 guests, surely 2 bottles, but now I'm nit picking.
I certainly would not recommend this place.

The motel did not live up to the description at all.
The room was TINY !, the bathroom was not clean, tiles needed a good scrub & floor needed washing.
Very claustrophobic with 2 people trying to move around.
Certainly give this one a miss.

We stayed overnight. The place is situated on the highest area of Mt. Gambier so we were overlooking the entire town from our room. It was beautiful especially at night.

Reception was friendly. Room is a bit dated but the view mire than makes up for it. Pool and Spa probably just need a little bit of updating, but we had fun cooling down for a good hour there.

We arrived late afternoon in mount gambier, all the hotels we passed seemed well best their sell by date. The Lakes wasnt much better. Very old fashioned room decor really bad, tiling in bathrooms grotty. The worst thing was the noise, I think we would be lucky if we got 3 hours sleep all night! Every time one of the other rooms above or to the side used the bathroom we had to listen to 3 minutes of the drains emptying. The ancient fridge started up every half an hour. The road outside is obviously used as a racetrack for young ones at night.
$160 for one night! Absoloutly shocking not worth $80. Never again, avoid it if you can.

For many years I have been visiting Mt Gambier in South Australia for business and pleasure. Over that time I have stayed in several establishments linked to chains and some not linked. On my last trip, the second week of July 2006, I stayed at the Lakes Resort which had been touted as "a fine if under rated motel".

After having stayed there for 2 nights I would strongly reject the formentioned quote and ask "How the hell did they get 3 stars?" I found the following problems - The heater was barely adequate to warm the room and it took hours to do so. The room had a spa bath but the hot water ran out long before the jet nozzles were covered. After the first night the staff came and took away the soiled towels but did nothing else. The steam room was out of order and from the look of the dirty old notice attached to the controls had been for several months. On the second morning breakfast hadn't arrived at the designated time because some one had forgot my order.

Normally if some little thing bugs me I can often let it go. Sometimes I call the desk and if the desk staff can't fix it I let it go. This time it wasn't one thing, it was several, and I thought I should warn others so that they are aware this motel is definately not up to the standards set be some of the other Mt Gambier motels and it certainly doesn't deserve 3 stars.

For the record - I don't get special treatment, I pay full price like a lot of other people so I expect to be treated fairly. Don't you feel the same?

The Lakes Resort is a 20 year old complex that doesnt shape up to its name in any way shape or form. First off the "resort" is what should be classed as a budget motel. Expect basic amenities in the room, average cleaning standards if you are lucky, and hapless babbling from the management. The Receptionist on our first day did seem nice and pretty together though, and the bed was well made.

We experienced a mechanical failure in our spa room on the first night of our stay which required a maintenance worker to be called. This is apparently a well known issue to both management and maintenance alike, and has never been resolved, much to the inconvenience of the traveler. This wouldn't have been an issue if the problem hadn't resurfaced merely a day later, but such was our experience.

The "Resort" claims to offer an indoor heated pool, spa, sauna and gym facilities. The pool is probably no more than 10 metres long, but a metre deep, and fails to provide railings to get in and out of the water, but is slightly heated. The spa is large enough for at least 6, but alas the water is hardly warmer than the pool, has no rails to aid access on the slippery wet tiles, and has no places for towels aside from the wet tiles on the floor. As for the Sauna, well it was permanently padlocked closed so you'll have to find another review to see how that was.

The Gym is a fitness fanatics nightmare. There is a single ancient treadmill which is too skinny for even the leanest athlete, a solitary cross trainer, one exercise bike and an all in one exercise machine that was missing over half its weight capacity (possibly as it was a cheaper model using sand filled weights). If you want a workout, you're better off running up and down from your room to the reception desk to inform management of whats gone wrong with your particular stay...

In addition, when I arrived I had overheard other guests complaining to management that their air conditioning didnt work, but I foolheartedly thought that it must be a mistake or that the patron was having a bad day.

Do yourself a favour, and avoid this place period. The Blue Lake is in itself a lovely attraction, but you cant see that from the room, and you'll have to drive to it anyway to see it, so you might as well stay in a better hotel.

Response from Val M, Public Relations Manager at Comfort Inn The Lakes
Responded 1 Feb 2015
Hi Ryan L. Your review is nothing but dramatised nonsense!! Firstly, yes we know we are not a "resort". Changing a Business name is not an easy fix. We are proud of the standard of our Motel, and are reviewed independently quite frequently, and need to meet certain standards, to which we pass. I'm really not sure what more amenities you would have liked in your room. Perhaps you are maybe comparing us with a 5 star city motel?? Yes, we have some issues with spa's from time to time, and unlike your comment of us repeatedly not fixing the issue is utter rubbish! We test the spa's on a regular basis, and when issues arise, they are fixed accordingly. It was unfortunate that it had to happen during your stay. No where do we advertise a sauna. We advertise everything else you mentioned. Again this is reviewed and inspected by local Council on a regular basis, and meets all council and state law regulations. Including the temperatures of the pool and spa, safety within the building. The room is maintained daily. We offer what we have and do not charge for it. The gym equipment suits the majority of our guests fine. No where do we advertise any lake views. The guest may see that we are close to the lake, and assume that we have lake views, but this is not the case. Your "DO NOT DISTURB" sign was on the ground, and not on your door. Our housekeepers have been told that in this case, they are to open the room and see if towels etc are on the floor, then the sign may have read "please make up my room". Then to go on and say that our housekeeper touched your belongings and computer is ridiculous and downgrading to them. These ladies take a lot of pride in their work, and do not deserve such public put downs.

It wasn't the flaky paint around the bathroom door frame, nor the smoke burn in the hand basin that bothered me. I was even willing to ignore the poor reviews on trip advisor; that was until the blaring sounds of 'go grease lighting' infiltrated my room at 10.30pm keeping me from much needed sleep after an 8hour journey. The Lakes resort advertises as being having one of the quietest settings in Mt Gambier, however, this is false advertising on the nights there is a Function on using a DJ. At the very least, the hoteliers should be aware of how sound travels and therefore could forewarn the guests using the rooms, all be it, below, but parallel to the function room. When I mentioned the noise in the morning, the hotelier didn't believe me saying she didn't hear a thing - her home/room being far behind the function room, clearly.

Further to this and because I was disgruntled, be aware of the 'deal' for small standard rooms - the bed is hard, the pillows are thin and the room is cold. The website does look great, but the reality doesn't match up.
