We had deliberately chosen an economical room (without windows) and our feeling is that if you are not claustrophobic it is a very good solution.
The room is very comfortable with its thick carpet and quality bedding. Not forgetting the very large marble bathroom with a huge shower with luxurious taps.
Free parking is also a benefit right in the city center.
On the other hand, some defects remain, including a rather noisy wooden floor and above all a second floor without an elevator.
The staff is unevenly welcoming and smiling as is often the case in this type of large establishment.
But the whole thing remains interesting for a stage.
Note the good breakfast (additional charge)

I was staying in Mt Gambier, and went out to look for some breakfast at about 7.30am. Nothing in the main drag seemed to open before 8am, except the Mt Gambier Hotel.
I decided to take a punt, and I'm really glad I did.
The first morning I had poached eggs and bacon on sourdough with a side of mushrooms.
The eggs were cooked perfectly, with lovely runny yolks, there was a very generous portion of bacon and the mushrooms were REAL sautéed mushrooms, and not some tasteless, heated up canned phenomenon so beloved of some cafes and restaurants now days.
The food was so good. that I had breakfast at the Mt Gambier Hotel every morning thereafter.
The Big Breakfast was amazing.
A huge serve with real honest to God sausages, and not some anemic chipolatas.
Everything on the plate was spot on.
Also I can recommend the scrummy omelet, cooked to absolute perfection.
It can be difficult to find an omelet in a lot of cafes now, particularly a beauty like the one served here.
I was absolutely satisfied with the food at this hotel.
Unfortunately the service was desultory on a couple of occasions, but mostly ok.
If you're in Mt Gambier and looking for a really good breakfast, at very competitive prices, you can't beat this place in my opinion!

We spent a few days over Easter here and it exceeded our expectations. A lovingly renovated grand old hotel, in an ideal central location, with very spacious, tastefully appointed and comfortable rooms with thoughtful touches. We had a room overlooking busy Commercial Road and with the excellent double glazing it was very quiet and peaceful. The Cave Garden and Robert Helpmann theatre are right across the road and Commercial Road is full of eateries. Would definitely stay again!

The Mount Gambier Hotel is very central, opposite the Cave Gardens and a perfect location for shopping and dining. The hotel has friendly, professional staff. Downstairs there is a lovely bar and restaurant, which incorporates reception. I would describe it as a classy pub with 5 star rooms.
I had a king room- it was not only huge, but beautifully appointed. It was well equipped, had a very comfortable sitting area and a stunning bathroom. Breakfast was good and the staff happily served it upstairs on the mezzanine when requested.
I highly recommend the Mount Gambier Hotel for those who enjoy beautiful rooms and friendly service.

This gem of a hotel is piece of history. According to staff and the photos on the wall, it dates back to 1863,shortly after the town was started (1849). The rooms are recently renovated with the latest fixtures (touch mirrors, tab ceiling lights and electronic door handles), the beds are comfortable, the food is very good, and the atmosphere is great. Rooms have about 15 foot high ceilings. Also, there is a game room on the ground floor and even I was able to win at the slots. I wish we could have stayed longer.

The Mount Gambier has the BEST chips (crispy outside, soft inside) we four ever tasted. Meals were very good, generous choices at reasonable prices. Tables are spaced sufficiently to hold a conversation without raising your voices. Clearly popular so best to book. Staff were very friendly and efficient. Highly recommend!

This is a great central location to stay. Park the car, check in and then explore all the local eateries and retail shops that are only a short walk away. The bar and restaurant is quite modern and spacious. The food is well priced for what you receive. I recommend the Atlantic Salmon.
The rooms are very accommodating and have almost everything you need. The staff are very friendly and always up for a chat.
Don't go past this one without looking it up, you'll be surprised.

Really surprised by how good the food and wine (list) was. We had a great time on the top level and would definitely return. We recommend the garlic loaf, duck breast and lamb breast.
Additional table service would be great, but it’s hard in a pub-like setting.

Fabulous, room exceeded expectation and amazing how quiet seeing new year party was on with hotel closing at 3am. Highly reccomend, central location. I never write reviews but room was clean, comfortable and service from senior staff was exceptional. We will definitely stay here again. Be mindful stairs to access rooms however not many. I could see the towns new year fire works from our room.

First time visit (2 night stay on coastal drive). No particular outstanding features, but sizeable, comfortable/ clean rooms with an excellent shower. Food also good (room service one night, & breakfast one morning). Staff very attentive, I cannot fault.
