My wife and I chose Carriages as a base for our visit to the Hunter Valley to attend a friend's wedding. This is the kind of place that you really hope to find when you're spending a few days away, but seldom do. Our room was one of six on the ground floor, arranged along a long shared verandah. There are two other rooms on a floor above that have private balconies. The verandah looks out on a large lawn with shady trees. There is a tennis court and a pool nearby. The room was unfussy and well appointed, with adjoining bathroom and shower. There was a small service area with toaster, electric kettle and plates and cutlery. Tea and coffee (fresh ground for plunger) was provided. Bed was a comfortable queen size. Everything was clean and well-serviced. A 'mini bar' was stocked with beers, an assortment of snacks, and wines from the Carriages vineyards.
Our room came with breakfast, which was brought to the verandah in the morning in a picnic hamper. The excellent continental-style fare consisted of fresh croissants, fresh fruit salad, fresh orange juice, muesli, yoghurt and grain bread for toasting, with an assortment of condiments.
The Carriages environment is among vineyards and situated away from the main house. It was quiet and relaxing, with bird life and the occasional kangaroo transiting the lawn. Our hosts were convivial and attentive without being intrusive.
Carriages is a short walking distance to both The Convent and Circa 1876, which makes it an ideal place to stay if attending events at either of those venues. It's also close driving distance to most of the main Hunter Valley vineyards and attractions.
I highly recommend this hotel, and would make it my preferred stay on any further visits to the Hunter Valley.

Always great to be met with a friendly smile and both our hosts picked this up and ran with it. The hotel itself is a quaint, country style cottage and seperate carriage house;split into several generous sized rooms. Our room was spotlessly clean, and though the period wooden style windows and doors were a little draughty(especially visiting toward the end of autumn for an exceptionally wet start to the weekend), there was ample bedding available as well as a split system heating/air conditioning unit that assured the room remained comfortable both day and night. In addition, breakfast servings were generous and are delivered to your door, fresh each morning. The carriages provides great value for money in comparison to its competitors and would definitely see us return as repeat custom.

Unfortunately, we only stayed here for one night with family and friends. The place is beautiful, the rooms are spacious and comfortable and the veranda is just great and cozy. The delicious breakfast came in a picnic basket with toast, croissants, jams, muesli, orange juice, yogurt and a large fruit salad. You could make your own coffee and tea. And during breakfast, kangaroos came and watched us 😀 Simply beautiful 😀

We booked a room with a fireplace. We called to confirm and left a voicemail but there was no answer and no call back. He called again the next day and got through and they confirmed yes room has fireplace. When we arrived about 20 mins early we picked up the keys from reception and checked the room. We noticed immediately there was NO fireplace and the room was cold and dirty and basically a outdated falling apart shanty and nothing like the photos in the booking listing and so went back to reception to find out what had happened. They advised they had no more rooms with fireplaces left but we would get a refund if we chose not to stay for this reason. We made the decision to find alternative accommodation although we had paid in full already they had assured us we would get a full refund so we weren’t worried. We left the room untouched and stayed at another hotel. We called booking.com and emailed to confirm the conversation we had with the receptionist and they also confirm we would receive a full refund but that it was up to the carriages to process it through. We waited for out refund but nothing came through. Hubby contacted the carriages hotel again and they said that because we didn’t double check that the room we booked had a fireplace that we won’t be getting it a refund! Hubby explained that he did confirm and also that booking.com description listed fireplace on the site. They still refused to refund us. We went to fair trading who said they would only offer a maximum of half our money back despite promising us a full refund on the day! Absolutely disgusted at the pathetic lack of customer service and blatant lies! Would not even rate one star but unfortunately it won’t let you do zero!

This hotel is very centrally located in the Hunter valley area. We enjoyed a very nice and quite time during our stay here. The room was very spacious and comfortable. The room even came with a fireplace that we truly enjoyed every night because it was a little chilly for us being that it was fall time and we are from Hawaii. The breakfast was delivered to our room every morning and we enjoyed sitting on the veranda enjoying it. During the evenings we took a walk around the property and saw many kangaroos and wallabies. Nerina and Alastair were always available to facilitate any of our requests and were able to give advice about the local community. Very nice place to stay and we will definitely do it again when we go back to the Hunter valley area.

We enjoyed two nights mid-week at Carriages. The location was great, just minutes from dozens of wineries and restaurants. Being midweek, only a few rooms had guests, which added to the peaceful feel of the garden locale. This would be a great place for a weekend away for a group of couples, particularly in warmer months when you could fully enjoy the pool and tennis courts. Our room was spacious, with a big breakfast feast delivered to our door each morning. The decor is French country, and is needing a bit of a refresh, but this adds to the country charm, to be honest.

Comfortable, quiet, welcoming. A generous breakfast was delivered about 8am each day and was lovely to eat out on the wide verandah. The pool was deep enough for a refreshing splash on a hot afternoon. Tennis before breakfast was fun.

From the moment we arrived at Carriages we felt spoiled. Our room was beautifully appointed and very quiet. We enjoyed a lovely bottle of Carriages Shiraz on the verandah before walking to enjoy our dinner at a nearby restaurant. A beautiful breakfast was delivered to us the next morning. Our hosts couldn’t do enough for us and were so friendly and welcoming. We absolutely loved it and would highly recommend. Sandie and Jerry. X

Our second visit was just as wonderful as our first. Thank You Nerina and Alastair! Your hard work delivers a wonderful, secluded and peaceful sojourn that is so accessible to the Hunter activities. It’s a weekend away experience to be taken again and again. The rooms were spacious and beds so comfortable that late sleep-ins were hard to resist! We love the picnic basket breakfast that gave a good foundation to the day of wine tasting when we were spoilt for choice in Pokolbin with welcoming cellar door tasting and food experiences - Baume, Brokenwood, Lindeman’s, Hunters Quarter, Pooles Rock, David Hook, Tulloch, Briar Ridge, Hunter Distillary(Polkolbin) only to name a few favourites!

We were made to feel very welcome at this hotel. Absolutely beautiful location, awesome picnic basket breakfasts, and very helpful family owners. Make sure to ask them about recommendations to visit nearby, as they can tell you best boutique wineries to try and very helpfully provided membership for a day for some. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a nice and homely place to stay in Hunter Valley.

Hi Lydia
Unfortunately I don't know either but as the previous respondent said, the owners are lovely and as you are providing your own cot I am sure you will be able to come to a happy solution! It is a lovely place to stay. Enjoy the break :-)
There are more places to choose from in the Pokolbin area.
