Detailed Reviews
This place is in a lovely location and we had a really well-appointed room (bit of a steep climb with a heavy suitcase tho'). Reception staff were very welcoming and helpful throughout. Being part way through a 5 week trip we really appreciated the surprisingly cheap laundry service. The rather restricted breakfast menu was a little disappointing and the one dinner we had there seemed rather pretentious and not value for money.

Anyone would love it here. The rooms are great. The staff is lovely and very knowledgeable about the area . The restaurant is excellent. Americans (and Europeans, I presume) might love it even more though because Spicers perfectly fit my image and expectation for Australian wine country, right down to the other guests mostly being people up from Sydney rather than off an international tour bus. I could see sunsets right from our room that seemed like they were from a movie set. There are kangaroos hopping around the property, especially early in the morning when us jet lagged Americans are already wide awake. Compared to places of comparable quality in Napa Valley, the prices were very fair. And they’ll do a bag of laundry for $30, making it much easier to pack light on your long trip!

We very much enjoyed a 3 night stay at the Spicers Vineyard Estate. The room was spacious, with a lounge area as well as the king size bed, and a terrace at the back. There was also a fireplace with a fire set ready for use on colder nights. It was well presented, and the service was first rate, with the room serviced each morning while we were having breakfast. Breakfast was good – with an interesting mixture of options on the menu.
I enjoyed the pool although it was rather brisk in September. The general feel of the place is very relaxed - we walked the grounds one afternoon and came across a mob of kangaroos.
The hotel also has a destination charger you can use if you have an EV.
Special mention to Courtney serving breakfast and to the Kiwi lady (sorry I didn’t catch your name) on reception and providing transfers. Great friendly service.
One minor negative – the jug in the room doesn’t fit under the tap so a bit of a hassle to fill to make a cup of tea.

I haven't been in these rooms yet to review them and now won't! Back in May we reserved rooms over the Xmas period to have a nice break, just for a change. We were looking forward to gourmet dining over the festive period and of course, Xmas lunch. Our travel rep didn' t have details at that time but said the menu would be up nearer Xmas. Fast forward to this week...having heard nothing from anyone, I checked and sure enough there was the Xmas lunch - at an extra $250pp on top of the $1000 per day premium rates we'd already paid! To add insult to injury someone had made the executive decision to just give us a hamper to have in our room on Xmas Day - WITHOUT INFORMING US. Surely the entire point of having the Xmas period away is to have Xmas dinner provided wherever you are. This is extremely shabby treatment of your customers, Spicer's....not because of any problems with staffing which we would understand, but because of your complete lack of communication over what is a big deal to most people.

We had a nice stay but did feel disappointed with the quality of our room (the one above reception) given the significant price we paid at an off peak period. Our room had no verandah or outdoor space to sit and enjoy a glass of wine which was something we had really looked forward to as part of our Hunter Valley experience. The bathroom had a spa bath but no window, only a small vanity and the room generally could have been in any four star hotel anywhere. Having said that, it looked as if the other rooms were larger with outdoor spaces so if you pick the right room, all good!
On the plus side, the team were friendly and breakfast at the Botanical restaurant was delicious. We enjoyed a lot of time at the pool and spa essentially having it to ourselves which felt very luxurious. We had a good time but it felt expensive for what was delivered overall.

Dear SydScotSam, Thank you for sharing your stay at Spicers Vineyards Estate, we're thrilled that you got to enjoy the wonderful outdoor pool & spa while the weather was still mild! We do have a couple of room types available, and will certainly make a note for your next stay that you prefer outdoor access from your room. Our Luxury Spa Suites on the first floor have those amazing balconies for an afternoon vino and a sunset view. We are thrilled that you enjoyed breakfast in Botanica, and we hope to welcome you back on a night that the Restaurant is open so you get to enjoy the delicious dinners also. Thank you so much for your feedback, we truly appreciate it and look forward to welcoming you back soon again. Warmest regards, The Spicers Vineyards Estate team

Good location in the heart of the hunter valley wine region. The grounds are really nice and we also used the push bikes provided to explore the local area (they charge extra for the electric bikes which we thought was a bit cheeky). We had a nice meal at their restaurant and were lucky enough to see lots of Kangroos but overall just felt like the hotel really wasn’t worth the money - nothing about it felt luxurious at all, it was all very basic and we felt it needed a refurb.

We booked the spicers vineyard house which looked beautiful in pictures, however was completely the opposite once we arrived.
Firstly, the good.
Driving in, the property is picturesque. Seeing the kangaroos grazing in the morning was fun, and feeding the beautiful pig
behind the veggie patch was a great experience. The staff servicing the breakfast shift at Botanica Restaurant were amazing. Remembered preferences and were kind and hospitable.
Now, for the negatives.
1 - the cleanliness. If you’re going to call yourself a 5 star luxury retreat with a hefty price tag to accompany it, you should at the very minimum have a decent cleaning service! The bins in the bathroom weren’t empty, the house smelled like something had died inside, and no matter how much we tried to air it out, it smelt the same. The floors weren’t even cleaned properly before arrival (I don’t think this place has seen a mop in a long while). Daily service consisted of making beds, throwing rubbish and nothing else. I understand it’s the country and insects are to be expected, but we were fighting spiders, mosquitos and bugs constantly, and left with plenty of very noticeable bite marks. Doors and windows of the property are old and do not open/close. They are covered in old spider webs (I know the difference between new ones and old ones as I work in the Cleaning industry). There’s no attempt at any kind of internal pest control or any measures taken to prevent them. Zero kitchen amenities (not even bottles of water - how’s that for 5 star?)
2 - the service. No follow up from reception for any bookings or car services we made. There is literally NO MANAGEMENT on site after 5pm (even though when calling reception the message says they’re experiencing a high volume of calls). We received no notification that there is nothing open on site on Monday/Tuesday to eat or drink. We were told to head up the road to Iron Bark Hill for lunch (An amazing place with a delicious menu). Basically after check in, we were on our own. We gave up trying to call reception after day one.
Nothing about this house is 5 star. During a time where people are encouraged to travel and spend money helping the regional economies, this place really lets the rest of the Hunter Valley down. Every single place we visited was clean, managed well and staff were always on hand and exceptional.
Either improve your game or lower your prices. Don’t deceive people who are honestly just looking for a good experience.

I was really looking forward to this trip given the positive reviews and because it was our baby moon. Unfortunately It was quite disappointing. We were promised a room upstairs with privacy and a view and when we arrived were given a room downstairs which everyone could look into. We were given the excuse that there were no king spa rooms upstairs when it clearly says upon booking that there are. The room was dated for the price and small things felt like they were cutting corners like a nearly empty jar of cookies as welcome snack and no fresh juice at breakfast (only concentrate). It might sound petty but you expect more when paying nearly $600 a night. Had a spa treatment which left me feeling in pain rather than relaxed. I asked when booking if it was suitable for pregnant women and they said it was even though it clearly wasn’t. There were limited options to rectify the situation. Even the local Thai massage place knows you shouldn’t have a pregnant woman on her back unless you have the right bed and equipment. Also had a hair treatment which they didn’t wash out so my hair was dripping in oil at the end and was made to feel awkward when I asked if I could have a shower to wash it out as I had already checked out. I proceeded to provide feedback at reception and they dismissed me saying that they don’t have anything to do with the spa and that the other pregnant woman who had a treatment had no complaints. Over all thought there was a lack of consideration or care in the hotel amentities and service.

I really am not sure where to start. I'd probably sound like a big nob if I told you that we have travelled the world staying in 5 star resorts like palaces in Brunei to hotels overlooking the Eiffel tower, chalets in the swiss alps, overwater bungalows in Tahiti, suites at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore to presidential suites in Bali, so what is there to say when you stay at a small 12 room boutique guesthouse in the vineyards of the Hunter Valley. Well it's always difficult arriving at a property with mixed reviews especially when reading those who leave outstanding reviews to get there yourself and find yourself bitterly disappointed. Well....rest assured this will NOT happen at Spicer's Vineyard.
We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary and were not expecting a great deal especially considering the reasonable price to stay. We chose the dinner, bed an breakfast package. We stayed in a ground floor standard king room. Yes that's right, not a suite upgraded room but their standard king room. We were VERY pleasantly surprised.
When we arrived on a 42oC day we were ushered into the lounge and offered a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate our anniversary. Loved the layout of the lounge with an honesty bar for beverages and ample amounts of reading material and games. Shortly after we went to our room which was considerable size for a 'standard' room with a lounge area with fireplace, large king bed with the most comfortable assortment of pillows I have ever slept on and a large bathroom with spa. The room opened up onto the back deck with lounge chairs, sun lounges, hanging chairs a well maintained garden leading onto the pool deck with luxurious towels. The pool area (not large, but perfect size as there are only 12 rooms), was perfect for a hot afternoon. We swam a few times and always had the pool to ourselves. In the cooler months there is also a spa to enjoy.
After a shower and drinks on the deck we headed to dinner at Botanica with views over the vineyard. We were very impressed with the paddock to plate concept and the flavours in our declicious meals. As we left the restaurant it was lovely to seeing Kangaroos in the vines and a mother with a joey in her pouch.
The following morning we had the best breakfast we have ever had. I want to tell you so much more but unknowingly there is a limit of characters in writing a review and I have reached mine. You must take a visit and find out for yourself how remarkable Spicer's Vineyard is.

In relation to the price charged for accommodation, the overall experience was disappointing.
On arrival, the vase of flowers opposite the reception desk were noticeably "dead" and looked as though they had been there for at least 3 weeks and the reception staff had done nothing about it (whether it is in their job description do so or not they should at least have removed the vase, stagnant water and slime). The (artificial) Christmas tree was still in the lounge and it was 3 weeks after Christmas that we visited.
The room we stayed in had numerous lights, both inside and especially outside that needed the bulbs replaced.
The inside of the room was quite clean, but the private courtyard and exterior were not. There were active wasp nests, mud tracks, filth in sliding door tracks, spider webs on exterior door handle. As far as value for money, the cleanliness was Poor.
The container for the liquid soap was very large (500ml) and had to be moved between shower, bath and sink wherever one needed soap. The fact that it simply had a screw cap left doubts as to the contents integrity.
Our experience (the service, the food and the atmosphere) at the restaurant for dinner the first night was fantastic. Conversely, breakfast the next morning was the absolute opposite. Order was taken but not submitted to the kitchen and coffee and juice took over half an hour and one reminder to waitstaff to arrive.

Dear Derekhon,
Thank you so much for your email and interest in staying with us in the beautiful Hunter Valley! We would love to welcome you to Spicers and spoil you.
Spicers Vineyards Estate has been designed as a couples retreat where many of our guests are either away for business or a quiet and relaxing time away with their partners. Many of our guests are travelling without their own children, hoping to truly wind down from the fast pace of work and parenting life and therefore as a general rule, we are an adults retreat.
However if you wish to come away as a couple we would be delighted to welcome you.
Warmest Regards,
Samantha
