Nice pub, just off Darby Street, in the exciting inner City Newcastle suburb of Cooks Hill. Travelling alone on this occasion I was happy enough sharing a bathroom for the very reasonable tariff this hotel offers. Room itself was a great size, with a TV and high pressed tin ceilings. There was a common area across the hallway with fridge and cooking facilities. Bathrooms and toilets well maintained and comfortable. Only problem for me was the inconsiderate, messy group in the room beside me. Throughout my three night stay they regularly slammed their door, occupied the better of the two showers each day (0630-0830), and frequently failed to find the bins with their hand towels. Not the hotels fault of course. Bed was very comfortable, the variety of pizzas tasty, the front bar inviting - with a good variety of beers on tap, and the staff personable and lovely. Location perfect for walking access to cafes, CBD, beaches, public transport (even the laundromat). Would stay here again if travelling solo.

Oriental Hotel is conveniently situated in Bruce Street Cooks Hill. Tariff very reasonable, if you are prepared to share clean toilets & bathrooms, with other guests. Friendly front bar, great pizzas served fresh, and walking distance to Darby Street, Honeysuckle, CBD & the great beaches.

Wonderful property! The room was clean and the shared bathrooms look like they have been recently upgraded. The communal kitchen was well stocked and there is coffee and tea as well 😊 You can walk to all the tourist sights and beaches as well as cafes, restaurants and shopping. Every staff member I interacted with was SO nice, professional and helpful making for an amazing stay.

My stay was pretty terrible. I didn't expect luxury for a budget stay, by myself, on business, and looking to save a few dollars. But still... the shared bathroom was grubby and 'unloved', so too the shared kitchen. The young guy behind the bar was not open to discussion in any nuanced or caring professional way. The room was drab, but that's ok given 3 stars. Rustic, which is fine.
I had two big problems.
1. I couldn't sleep. Although it was a Tuesday night, the music from the bar downstairs (which sounded like it was coming from my wardrobe) made it impossible to contemplate sleep until it went off at midnight. I don't mind that either, but it's an imposition. Then I couldn't sleep because the room is completely unheated, it was a cold night in the middle of winter, and i had only two thin, 'prison-issue' blankets. I was too cold to sleep. No service, so no capacity to get more 'supplies'.
2. after this terrible night, and facing a day of work, and facing another night when I couldn't get to sleep til after midnight, i decided to leave. The very sympathetic and nice cleaning lady gave me the number of the manager. I asked for a refund for the second night that I had pre-paid. He promised to 'think about it' and get back to me. He didn't.
My conclusion is that this man has a terrific asset that he is running very poorly, and would do well to consider that if he ran it with some sense of fairness and care, it would be doing a lot better business than it is. As it is, I would never go back there, and I would urge others not to either. I moved to a wotif mystery deal, for $100, and had a great second night at at four star hotel.
The lesson - looking to save big on accommodation is often adherence to a false economy. In the dive, one is inclined, for example, to go out and spend big on dinner; in the nice hotel room, one feels ok about grabbing supplies from a deli and eating cheap in the room.
This hotel is in a great spot. Great inner-city suburb. probably fine for back-packers in 'other-than-winter weather.

I had a terrible experience with the Oriental Hotel. I booked a room with the them three months in advance through Agoda. However when I called the hotel to confirm, they told me that the Queen room I had booked was not available. Instead, they offered me a single room. To double check, I called back a month after the original booking, and they had my booking wrong but said that they would amend it.

After two wrong bookings, I thought it would be important to confirm a third time. On the third time, they had my booking wrong yet again! They had written down the wrong days. They refused to acknowledge that they had made a mistake, refused to rectify it, refused to provide me with any sort of a discount for their mis-management and the owner of the hotel was extremely rude to me on the phone, stating that it was my fault.

To top it off, the showers had NO hot water, and the towels from the previous stayers were still hanging on the back of the door. Yuck. I am extremely disappointed with their lack of organisation and lack of customer service. Have a pizza there, stay somewhere else.

Love: clean rooms and bathrooms, close to darby street (very trendy cafes and restaurants) and CBD- verrry convenient, live music downstairs at the pub, opening windows and high ceilings

Dislike:Teeny television with 3 hazy channels, carrying my heavy suitcase up two flights of stairs

I would certainly stay here again!

I advise people very vigorously to not patronize this hotel which employs staff in their attached pizza restaurant who behave in an offensive and contemptuous manner toward customers.
I’m not local but randomly wandered past this evening and decided to order a pizza to take away. I was sitting close to the counter, waiting patiently, reading, as I heard everyone who collected a pizza being told “sorry for the wait” by the guy who was boxing them up and giving them out. The staff were obviously busy, so I was patient, however after 45 minutes I enquired about my order and found it hadn’t even been STARTED because no one making the pizzas seemed to be even AWARE of it. At this stage I was accepting that there had been an unlucky error in a busy pizza place and I would have been happy with a cursory "sorry" and a refund.
I did ask for my money back. The guy who originally took my order was fetched. Without making eye contact or saying a word (certainly not sorry!) he reached into the till and produced part of the money I had paid (by card). I asked for a full refund. He said he couldn’t give me a full refund since I wasn’t willing to wait (FORTY FIVE MINUTES AND MY PIZZA HAD NOT EVEN BEEN STARTED TO BE MADE BECAUSE THE ORDER WAS LOST!) I told him that since I had just wasted the better part of an hour over his error, I certainly would be requiring a full refund. He reached into the till and, now with aggressive eye contact and a hateful sneer on his face, THREW some coins at me, then yelled at me as I retreated out the door “have a nice day” in a sarcastic, spiteful tone of voice. This guy’s behaviour is deplorable. No hotel that supports its staff (by continuing to employ them) to show antipathy towards and to make a mockery of customers deserves to be in business. Don’t give them yours!

We found this little pub in Newcastle and were impressed there were no pokies and no TAB. Instead simple rooms with crisp white sheets in the newly renovated first floor of the pub and a charming old and relaxed feel downstairs where they had great pizzas too!! Will stay again, good value for money.

Loved: Modern spacious pub room - newly renovated, fantastic queen size bed with lovely linen, new carpet.

Disliked: Very small TV and cigarette smoke wafting up from pub below.

Bathrooms are shared. I would definitely stay here again despite the cigarette smoke as the price is very good for the quality room compared to other motel rooms offered in Newcastle.
