Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We enjoyed our stay, had 2 different nice generous rooms in a traditional pub. In the bigger one you couldn't open the windows (I like fresh air at night) but it was a hot air con night anyway, so all good. Parking requires a bit of smartness, if you don't want to pay meters look up the hill. The Grand is only two blocks from the beach and one block from two very good coffee places plus plenty of restaurants. Nice draft beers downstairs.

We stayed here for 2 x nights on the way to Sydney. Lovely old pub with good rooms. We had a room with a terrace and it was clean with good WiFi and air con. The terrace was a bit grubby though and could do with a good scrub. Nice and quiet. We ate both nights in the hotel and the food was fabulous and the beer prices on happy hour were good to. There is no parking at the hotel but if there is free street parking if you are there are at the weekend or after 5pm. There is also free street parking in Watt Street past the police station all year round if you don't mind not being able to see your car. We left it there for the 2 x nights and it was fine. Hotel is withing walking distance to the lovely beach and there are a couple of nice cafes there that do good breakfasts. All in all a good stay and would recommend.

We had a school reunion at The Grand Hotel. Hospitality manager was flexible and approachable. Drinks first, followed by meals for 25. All meals were great, lots of compliments, all came out together and were hot. Great job staff at The Grand.

The Grand is an old style pub with deep polished wood everywhere and obviously very special back in the day. Serves excellent food and beer. Staff are friendly and helpful.in a safe location opposite the police and courthouse. Old style room is small but clean.

Probably worst meal I’ve ever had. Ordered scotch fillet medium rare and it was so tough! Also the mash potato was full of lumps. Would not go there again and would not recommend. I did mention something to the girl hat picked up the plates but she didn’t say anything.

Fabulous hotel, classic pub accommodation in grand style. Clean comfortable rooms, quiet location close to transport, beach, restaurants. Excellent food and very friendly staff. Bathroom very functional and wine glasses in the fridge was a nice touch. The original building, architecture, grand timber staircases etc. are impressive and well maintained.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel not expecting to much, due to the low price, but were impressed with our lovely rooms 8 & 9 with great king size comfortable beds. The staff couldn’t have more helpful even though we arrived late and left early. We found the central location in Newcastle to be great, with lovely walks along Memorial cliff walk and Nobbys lighthouse

We were attending a party nearby so the location of the Grand was great. also close to the Mall and the Harbour and the beach. it was also easy for us to get to via the light rail, as we caught the bus to Newcastle. Beware, you can only get to rooms via a beautiful old staircase, so consider this if mobility is an issue. the bed was super comfy and the amenities all good. Staff were very welcoming. Although the rooms have obviously been updated, it is till obvious that this is an old building. Our pressed metal ceiling had rust in it and a hole. Also the sash windows could do with a good clean. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay. we didn't get to sample the food or beer at the pub so I can't comment on that.

Not great. The hotel was doing renovations right next door to my room which there was no warning about. It was constant drilling and banging and the loud radio /tv that the tradies we’re listening to, I went out for hours and returned to it still continuing, even after I left my room at 6pm it was ongoing. I was woken up at 8:20am to more banging /drilling noise. The room was clean and comfortable but terribly lit by one dim light, the same in the bathroom, making both rooms feel dark and dingy. Some better lighting and it would be fine. The staff at check out were friendly. Seemed like a good location
