The room was lovely. Gotta love the day beds. Don't bother with the room service it is way too expensive. We ordered chips & gravy, which cost $20!!!!! It is much easier to either walk over to the club & it will only cost $10. Otherwise, use Uber etc.

Due to airport and airline chaos during school holidays, we had to drive between Canberra and the Gold Coast and on the way back, we decided to stop over at Newcastle. We (family with 2 young kids) have not used hotel style accommodation since the kids were born and rise of Air BNB for a long time and due to short notice, we decided to book this style of accommodation.

We had the 2 bedroom apartment and the accomodation is situated in the residential/industrial area, which was in a quiet location. The rooms are clean, modern, the beds were actually quite comfy. And yes as we expected in a traditional hotel setting, there is not much room for kids to run around, which doesn't bother us.

The best thing is the restaurants (A club) are just next door and we don't have to worry about looking for food in an unfamiliar place. We had lovely dinner and breakfast there. Food is reasonably decent and reasonably priced.

The staff are friendly and courteous.

Overall, it was a lovely over night stay for stop over

We stayed in a superior room for New year’s Eve and New year’s day. The location is in Mayfield about 10 mins drive from Newcastle CBD. Apart from the West club next door, there are not really any other restaurants or facilities close to the hotel. West club is quite large and covid safe so we did enjoy quite a few meals there. Alas, the included hotel gym pass could not be used at the club as the gym and pool were closed on both 1st and 2nd Jan. Felt a bit ripped off due to this. Also, there is currently only one bike available for hire at the hotel even though their website says there is two.

The superior room had modern decor and a couple’s twin shower. They cost about $50 per night more than normal rooms and are located on the upper floors. The room itself was small and a bit stuffy on arrival. There was no option to open windows so air con had to be used. The windows were oddly located at the upper aspect of the wall so you had to stand up to look outside. You cannot sit on your bed or on a chair to look outside so I felt a bit claustrophobic. Wifi worked well in the room. Bed was comfortable but sheets were heavily starched and noisy on movement. Hallway noises could be heard inside the rooms and this was particularly annoying in the wee hours of NYE. We slept much better the next night needless to say.

My recommendation would be to go for the normal rather than superior rooms. I believe it is those rooms that have the large bay windows that other posters have mentioned. There is no need to pay extra for superior rooms as it does not offer much more. I think this hotel offers a budget friendly option for many travellers wanting good service and the convenience of a large club next door.

I would also like to commend the staff for safekeeping an expensive item my husband left in the room accidentally . We returned to collect it and were impressed by the process and the staff. Keep up the good work!

Firstly, the in-room wifi is great, and there is a second wifi for streaming from your mobile phone to the in-room TV. The room has good facilities, everything you would want, but the dark brown colours and dim downlights make the room rather gloomy. Very sadly, the in-house bar and fine dining have both disappeared, and guests are now referred to the next door premises for a very ordinary BBQ grill joint. Yuck. We won't be coming back.

Spent 2 nights here on our way South and found it entirely to our liking. Only a short drive into the City Center but more important for us was Free Parking and next door to the Wests Club where we could have dinner and a few drinks and not worry about driving. Breakfast was also there with a good variety to select from at a reasonable price. Prior to brekkie in our room was a cuppa with Free Bikkies being a nice touch.
Our room was pretty big with a comfy firm huge bed and Bay sit in window overlooking the sports field away from the Main road Traffic. Spacious Bathroom with double end shower.
All was neat , clean and tidy at a very fair price.

Booked a 2 bedroom apartment. Check in was terrible. The hotel was fully booked and reception only had one person serving people. They didn’t even have our room ready so we had to still wait even though it was way past check in time. Our toilet water would not stop running it was so loud. Basically the room didn’t have a functioning toilet. I called reception and they said there was nothing that can be done because maintenance had gone home but they apparently fixed it. I wasn’t able to get another room. I felt sorry for the staff who were clearly understaffed. This is not acceptable to pay for 2 rooms and only have 1 functioning room.

I stayed in a one bedroom apartment and enjoyed the spacious layout of the lounge room/kitchen, the bedroom and the bathroom. Every aspect of the accommodation was very comfortable and clean. Staff were all very friendly and helpful throughout my 4 night stay from Check In through to Check Out. It is an easy walk through to the restaurants and bar next door in Wests Leagues Club which like The Gateway Inn is more of a boutique style Club with great food and an enjoyable intimate atmosphere. The Continental Breakfast in the Club Restaurant was included with the accommodation and was very good. I can certainly recommend The Gateway and look forward to my next visit to Newcastle.

Great handy location in a quiet area 5 minutes drive from the centre of Newcastle. Your stay gets you automatic access to the adjacent club with reasonably priced food and beverage offerings. I will happily return.

Good view and overall a good room although a bit small.

There was no water pressure in the shower at all. I feel like I have t had a shower in 2 days.

The air con was very noisy, sounds like a freight train in your room.
I couldn’t sleep without it on because the room was very stuffy.

We stayed here for the weekend to try something new compared to the usual hotels in Newcastle. It was a pleasant surprise. We had a nice clean quiet room with a great view. Right next door were all the facilities of the leagues club where they provide generous serve meals. The hotel is located only a few minutes from the centre of Newcastle and quite nearby was the seafood markets and restaurants for lunch.
Overall quite a pleasant stay, and with Covid in mind they provide a very generous breakfast served right to your door.
