Detailed Reviews
Great place to stay if cycling from Nelson Bay to Stockton. On the cycle path and close to the Stockton to Newcastle ferry. Staff were very friendly and professional. We had 2 double rooms for 1 night. Shared bathrooms. There is a kitchen upstairs but it requires crockery, kettle and toaster to make it more usable for guests. There is a fridge and microwave. They do not offer breakfast. If leaving early please advise staff so that you can get out as all doors downstairs are locked. Bathrooms were not cleaned the day we arrived. Our room was a good size, the bed comfortable but the side table was not clean. This is basic accommodation but well priced. I enjoyed the pressed metal ceilings, old windows frames, and the old styled, original bathroom. Lots of friendly locals in the bar. Dining room was open for dinner.

The Boatrowers Hotel is an ol'World style of pub oozing in history. Many people describe the pub as a "step back in time experience", with that said don't go there expecting the Grand Hyatt & silver service.
The pub accommodation is clean & tidy with shared bath & toilets, as you can expect the costs are moderate compared to staying at a lavish hotel. Meanwhile the pub grub is good pub standard food at reasonable prices.
All in all a unique pub, the kind of which is fast vanishing in the modern World.

Staying in Newcastle for the long weekend .
Saw the Boat Rowers on line and it read well and the menu and pictures looked nice ,so we took the ferry over to Stockton with the intention of having lunch . Walked the 1.5 km from ferry to hotel . Got there at 2 pm and woman just flatly said “lunch is finished’ despite their own website saying lunch was on until 2:30 pm . She just said “ That must be an old website “
Having said all that it was probably a blessing in disguise as the food that we could see on diners plates bore no resemblance to the descriptions that were on the website and the place had a nasty smell about it ,
The pub closest to the ferry landing looks to be a much better bet .

While the service at the bar and at the bistro were great - all the girls were lovely but that’s where it stops. The food was very bland. No real flavour at all. And NO salad! They had two choices of salad on the menu but none of the meals were served with salad. I had the special, beer battered flat head, basically a plate of soggy chips with about 5 strips of battered fish. Basically a plate of deep fried food and no salad to wash it down with. I had to drown the fish in tartare sauce for some flavour. My husband had the schnitzel - he usually has parmy but for the money they were charging they only listed sauce and cheese, no ham, so he opted for the Hawaiian thinking surely bacon pineapple and cheese would taste good. For the $24 it wasn’t worth it. Very disappointing. Again the staff were great but the meals were a let down. Won’t be back.

Very affordable and friendly.
Locals made me very welcome, affordable accommodation with great specials on the bistro.
Clean rooms with comfy bed to relax in.
Also felt very secure upstairs.
Absolutely looking forward to returning in the future

Stayed here with my 21yo son and can’t say enough about this place. Friendly staff, friendly locals, clean toilets, excellent (large!) meal and nice clean room with a comfy bed. For a country pub stay this is as good as it gets. Thanks to all the people who made our brief stay so great!

Went on a Saturday night, very busy but food was still out quick. Ate the special for the night, schnitzel. Decent size and tasty. A good variety of menu and well priced. Only issue was they didnt have a decent desert menu. Would visit again when in town.

Not a bad little pub with a large outdoor beer garden.
seems to mostly be locals in the sports bar and bistro quiet on the few times I have visited.
Did pick up a nice stubby cooler though.
Recommend the seafood basket
