Detailed Reviews
We spent a night here during a brief visit to Armidale and would stay there again. The bedrooms are very large and comfortable with great character and the house is in lovely grounds, surrounded by countryside - yet it's only five minutes from the centre of the town. We had dinner there which was OK, but not exceptional, served by a delightful team in a rather soul-less room which would have benefitted from a decorator's 'touch'. So why don't we give it five stars? The answer is our breakfast. It was due to be served between 8am and 9am and we said the previous evening that we planned to leave between 8.30am and 9.00am as we had a long drive ahead of us. When we arrived in the dining room at exactly 8.00am, there was no one to be found; eventually I tracked someone down in the kitchen and it was well after 8.30am when we received our first food. The coffee was disappointing, jam and butter were served in small plastic containers as one would expect in a cheap motel and we were charged $3.00 extra for a slice of bread under an egg. If we visit Armidale again, we'll find a cafe in the town for breakfast. Apart from this, we strongly recommend staying there, and it's always possible that breakfast will have improved by then.

We stayed for three nights in total at Peterson’s at the start and end of our road trip around New England. It’s a beautiful historic home that has been converted into a B&B. The main hall was a welcome sight on our arrival - coming out of the cold to see two log fires and comfy armchairs was the best!
A freshly cooked breakfast (eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomato, toast and fresh fruit and yoghurt) was served between 8-9am in one of the dining rooms.
Our rooms were very comfortable and the spa room was enormous. Lovely antique furniture was combined with modern comforts such as underfloor heating in the bathroom.
The staff were all friendly and welcoming. There was some variability in their service and processes, but overall they made our stay really pleasant. The complimentary cheese plate, bottle of Peterson’s wine, and port or muscat by the fire after dinner was the icing on the cake.
We would definitely stay in this beautiful property again.

We stayed overnight during our NSW country road trip. The property is a beautiful old building within a picturesque wine estate located about 10 minutes from the center of Armidale. The arrival to the property was a trip back in time. Parking under the arrival verandah and walking up into the main hall was a lovely welcome. The staff were friendly, helpful, welcoming and unobtrusive. We were given Room 1 - a spacious room that has an old world charm. The room had all the required facilities including a big, deep bath. The bed was comfy and the WiFi food. A continental or cooked breakfast was included in the tariff which was tasty. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and though it was good value.

It has taken me over a week to review this one. I believe that this place when it is full staffed would be great. We arrived with only one attendant for cellar door and accommodation (only 30 mins early) and told we could have a wine tasting while we waited. Nice of them. So the one staff member ran down and opened up a cold room with not heating or fire for us to do just that. We booked a week ahead for set menu dinner only to be told that we could not get in the main dining (cosy warm) room. Food was average though I did enjoy the soufflé. Seems like people who had been there before were in the know on how to get the better options. Shame because the rooms were lovely and the bath in room one a dream. Don’t really like leaving a negative review as Armidale as a whole looks like it needs all the help it can get. Time for some staff training Peterson’s. They were all lovely but did not really know what they need to know.

Response from Kimberley Levy, General Manager at Petersons Armidale Winery & Guesthouse

Dear Ilikeitornot Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback on your stay with us. I could not match your tripadvisor name with your booking, otherwise would have liked to give you a call to discuss your experience and to give my apologies directly. I am surprised to hear that there was only one attendant on when you arrived and if this is the case, I apologise. We have been doubling up on staffing across all areas (check in, cellar door, housekeeping, dinner etc) since reopening after COVID firstly as we have been fully booked almost every night and secondly to ensure that we are keeping a close eye on sanitization, social distancing and the health and safety of our guests and staff. With regards to it being the same staff member who checked you in and also did your wine tasting; we are all trained to be able to work in different departments and usually people are pleased to be able to taken care of by the same staff member at different times. I would imagine that the other staff on duty were taking care of housekeeping and cleaning which is maybe why you did not see them. I am sorry that you found the food average, this is really unusual feedback as we regularly get excellent comments on our food. I hope that if you mentioned this to our staff on the day they were able to help rectify the problem in some way, as we are always so happy to do if we are not meeting expected standards. I am so sorry that you were disappointed with your meal and dining experience. It is very unfortunate that we are currently only able to fit eight people into our usual restaurant due to COVID restrictions, but instead of capping our dining at that number we have opened up a second dining room (hence double staff and double costs of heating) to ensure that we are offering dinner to all our guests to save the inconvenience of going into town - we have tried to make this room as cosy as possible with dimmer lights, a fire and candles on the table . I am so pleased that you found your room lovely, and that you enjoyed our beautiful claw foot bath and underfloor heating in the bathroom. I hope you were able to enjoy your complimentary wine tasting (I am sorry that you found the cellar door cold, it is an old heritage stables and Armidale does get very cold in winter time) and was able to pick some wine to enjoy with your dinner. If you would like to email or phone me with your direct feedback on our staff and the areas that they require training I would be very grateful to hear from you - stay@petersonsguesthouse.com.au or 0267720422. I am pleased that you found the staff lovely - we work very hard to ensure that we are providing a friendly helpful service and I am pleased that the staff you came across we pleasant. I would love to hear your feedback so that I can ensure that everyone is well trained in every possible area they can be. Thank you for choosing Petersons, I am sorry that your stay as a whole did not meet our usual standards and hope that you will return again to have the wonderful experience that we are used to providing. Warm regards Kimberley

Petersens came highly recommended and we were so excited to be able to book a two night stay. We loved the location and the sense of history but were so disappointed to discover how badly the place was being administered. We allowed leeway because of covid and presumably much loss of income but it's always the little things ...
Such as - there was one coat hangar in the cupboard. Somebody's old sox were in the top drawer of the dressing table. When I tried to open a drawer in the bathroom dresser the knob came off in my hand. I had to ask for an iron and board.
When we went in to dinner the candles had not been lit, the music had not been turned on, a plastic tray of glasses was on the sideboard. The food was not as it had been purported to be, edible but could have been oh so much more.
The breakfast order was a piece of A4 paper torn in half. The choice could only rival a standard motel. The food was unexciting, my toast was buttered for me. Not a professional touch. The grounds have been left unattended with garden lights either not working or having fallen over in the garden beds. The fly screen in our room was ripped and falling out. Fences have fallen over, gates toppled and buildings in disrepair. However the underfloor heating in the bathroom was a huge hit.
The staff were friendly and helpful but time and motion is clearly not top of their priorities at the moment. The number of times a dining room staff member walked out of the room with empty plates etc. on tables needed to be cleared.
There is so much potential here and needs so much more love. We can only hope that as things ease from a covid point of view Petersens can be restored to the old lady we had initially heard about. Then we would consider a return stay. Unless things improve substantially there is no way we would either return or be willing to recommend it to others.
Maybe another victim of covid ... so sad.

Recently spent four nights here whilst visiting the Armidale area. Friendly and welcoming staff, a lovely atmosphere, beautiful, even in winter, grounds and ample parking.
Our room was a good size with under-floor heating in the bathroom. We found our bed a little soft for our liking, but that's a personal thing and you really can't order your mattress to suit.
One negative , for us, was the breakfast room and menu. The chairs are way too low for the table top and you have your elbows higher than your hands to use cutlery. If you are well over two metres tall that may not be a problem but we heard other diners commenting on this. The breakfast menu is limited to a continental style as well as bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and eggs. This may sound adequate, but did not change during our four breakfasts. Picky? Perhaps, but a little variety would not go astray. there are seven bedrooms, so you won't find it overcrowded when you stay.
Wine tastings and sales ave available from 10.00 till 16.00, daily and there is a good selection of Petersons local wines, as well as those from other Petersons vineyards.
the guesthouse is located a short drive from the city centre so there is no traffic noise or noise from neighbours. Given a choice of the motels/hotels in Armidale at Petersons, there is no contest.Definately recommended.
Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay and woulkd be happy if return in in the area again.
Thanks especially to Kimberley for her kind attention.

While on holiday in Armidale, we decided to spoil ourselves with an exclusive dinner at Petersons Winery.Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly hostess who showed us to our table in the lavish formal dinning room. Before ordering wine we were able to sample a selection in order to make our choice. The meal was exquisite, the wine complemented the dinner, and to our amazement the bill was very reasonable.
We highly recommend this venue.
We were so impressed that we decided to return the next day for wine tasting at the cellar door followed by an antipasto platter in the manicured gardens. A delightful experience!!!

This is a great guest house but our stay was let down by small things that shouldn’t happen at these sort of prices. First the good, the house is beautiful, particularly the main living room with two roaring fires. The wines are great, we had a wine tasting that they run for guests in the evening in said living room. The food at dinner was great though the experience was a little spoilt by the fact that we and another couple were put in a conference room because of COVID restrictions limiting numbers in the dining room. It was a bit cold and bleak. Not their fault but disappointing. The not so good was that our room was a bit cold. We had the largest of the rooms and I wouldn’t recommend this room in winter, the heater was just not powerful enough. We had a large spa bath but there wasn’t quite enough hot water to fill it to above the jets. Our package was supposed to include a cheese platter on arrival. This wasn’t offered so we assumed we’d misunderstood but confirmed that was part of the package the next morning. To be fair, they did give us an extra bottle of wine on departure the next morning because of the oversight. Overall we enjoyed our stay but probably wouldn’t be rushing back here.

Staying at @petersons_guesthouse_armidale has been one of the highlights of our tour around New England, NSW. Supporting local has never paid off so much in terms of finding incredible places only a few hours’ drive from home. We obviously aren’t the only ones who realised what a great idea touring New England would be; we’ve had to book ahead for restaurants and cafes throughout the whole trip because of how busy some places are.
This treasure will definitely be somewhere we return to. The service is outstanding (one staff member, Kimberley, was particularly helpful; she asked us about what we wanted to see in the local area and even offered to print out info about the two walks we were keen on... we really appreciated her local knowledge and LOVED walking around Threlfall Track)!
The dinner here (which is created daily by the chef) was so good last night that we decided to eat in again. The fact that the dining room is stunning and warmed by a fireplace didn’t hurt either. ;)

Petersons is a romantic destination from a bygone era, done well and worth staying more than one night. On approach, the house is splendid and walking through the front door into the baronial hall, cosy with two fireplaces sets the mood for a memorable stay. But it is the attentive staff and warm welcome that seals the deal.
Thank you Petersons for your many generosities - food, wine, rate discount and gifts. Our very spacious room had period décor, king bed, huge bathroom with under-floor heating and a radiator that fended off the minus 4 degrees Armidale night. We didn’t need the electric blankets, or the overhead fan!
For dinner, the set menu – 3 entrees, 3 mains and 3 desserts - had interesting choices. The food was most enjoyable, particularly the cheese soufflés, and servings are generous. Better still, a good selection of Petersons wines is offered at winery prices. Afterwards enjoy a port or muscat in the hall in front of those fires before retiring to your comfy bed wondering how you’ll tackle a cooked breakfast (included) the next morning.
