Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you are planning to visit Queenstown for a few days and you are not too particular about your accommodation, you might want to consider HaKa Lodge. If you are going to be out all day exploring and don't require much from your accommodation, you can opt for a private room. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind: - The private room is suitable for a couple, but the linens, pillows, sheets, and the room itself may not meet your expectations. The price is lower, but the room is still decent. - There is no toilet inside the guest room, but there is a common toilet that everyone can use, as well as a living room and a kitchen. - Housekeeping service is not provided daily unless you pay extra for it. If you need towels or other amenities, you will have to pay extra for them as well. If you are willing to pay a higher price for accommodation, you might want to consider booking somewhere else. However, if you are like us and plan to spend most of your time exploring the city and just need a place to sleep, HaKa Lodge is a good option. The rooms have heaters and electric fans, but there are no other amenities like shampoo (although they do have it in the toilet, it is often empty). Towels are provided, but any extra towels will cost you. The location is perfect and accessible to all places in town. You can walk to everything and won't miss out on anything because it is right in the center of the city. If I were to come back to Queenstown again, I would consider staying at HaKa Lodge for a decent place to stay.

I'm deeply disappointed by the treatment we received at HAKA LODGE in Queenstown. Despite having booked two rooms through booking.com well in advance for 4 adults, upon arrival, we were informed at reception that children were not permitted. Despite our efforts to find a solution, such as offering to have only two adults and the two children to occupy each room for 4 people, we were instructed to contact the third party Booking.com which we did and cancelled only one of the two rooms as I managed to find an alternative accommodation for the two adults and 2 children. Two adults then returned to Haka Lodge to check in, only to find that the room we hadn't canceled had been resold. Their reasoning is breach of their policy ‘No Children CHiLDREN ALLOWED’ , how can it be breached of contract? We were not able to get hold the keys of the rooms we managed to get in until the reception only? We requested but did not insist! Despite our requests to speak with a manager, we were unable to resolve the situation. Despite our booking being for four people, the lodge refused to allow children to stay with adults, citing policy. Even after canceling one room as instructed, both rooms were resold. This experience left us feeling disregarded as customers, and it's evident that profit was prioritized over customer satisfaction and basic accommodation needs…In light of the mistreatment we've endured as paying customers who had booked our accommodation long ago through booking.com, how can we seek justice for our experience? It's incredibly unjust that our rooms were resold without our knowledge, and the response of simply saying "sorry, but there's nothing we can do" is unacceptable! Where is justice for paying customers in this situation? Providing only an email address for a manager who cannot be reached at that moment is extremely unfair! I will never recommend HAKA Lodge after this experience. Haka lodge gave me worst experience here in Queenstown!

Fantastic location - just a 5 minute walk into town! We had the 1 bedroom apartment, which was spacious, tidy and clean. We really liked having our own private balcony as well. Great value for money. It was nice not having to bring our own towels or bedding. Dave on reception was very friendly and helpful. We also didn't have any trouble with noise. We would definitely stay here again.

Staff friendly and communicative. After hours check-in no prob. Street parking limited (tho maybe better not on a Fri eve / when the street construction done). Centrally located to bars/restaurants. The place itself feels a bit run down and unloved and while the linens were clean the carpets/baseboards were not. Kitchens and bathrooms fine. Vibe a bit fratt/party kids, tho reasonably quiet and no misbehaving. Overall, perfectly fine and adequate, run-of-the mill hostel. Gets job done.

Was a nice stay with nice staff. Very comfortable beds and a nice to have the privacy curtain too. Showers were nice and warm, the shower began to over flow and staff fixed as soon as I told them. Nice lounge and kitchen too with plenty of books, movies and games. Due to poor weather the mountains were closed but the lodge has chalk board of everything going on in queenstown.

The room was perfect! the only problem was the party that went to 4am in the morning below us - loud music and doors being slammed all night :( The host was absolutely lovely - David? cant fault him at all - and unfortunately no one was on reception to control the party.

Not my vibe 👎 To expensive for what it has to offer. The one positive was the shower pressure it was unmatched, Someone sick was allowed in even though she’d come from a hostel with 10 cases of Covid I was mortified! She spent her entire time there in the lounge? It’s very below satisfactory.

Kia ora illumin8tiv, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us, I am checking this with our Queenstown team as we have policies in place for this - guests who are sick are only to stay in their rooms and can only stay if we can safely separate them from the rest of the lodge. I can assure you we are following strict protocols to protect our staff and guests. Nga mihi Haka Lodge

As soon as I entered the lodge, there was a disgusting smell in the lobby like someone has just pooped on the floor, either that or they lit poop scented candles. OR it could be that they are a very small building and no proper ventilation, very small cramped up and messy rooms. I had booked it for two nights and couldn’t even stay for one. Would not recommend, can definitely find better places for around the same price. The lady at front desk (Charlotte), was kind enough to offer to change my dorm room but i was so put off by the smell when I entered first that I didn’t want to stay there at all.

Kia ora TheOutdoorFoodie, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us, Of course, nobody had relieved themselves on the floor, and nor did we light that kind of scented candle, the building has opening windows in every room. We are sorry you felt there was a smell that was unbearable to stay in, as I understand it the issue we were made aware of was the size of your room which as you mentioned we offered to swap. Nevertheless, I will pass on to the manager Charlotte and we will make sure there is nothing wrong with the building. Nga mihi Kirsty

This is my second visit here which speaks for itself I guess. I spent five days here over the Christmas holidays when the place was very quiet, which suited me...but is probably not ideal for a standard review. It is however perfectly situated, central without the noise and minutes away for food shopping. There are plenty of toilet/shower areas and two reasonable size kitchens with a nice outdoor balcony to relax on. The only slight draw back for me are the dorms are somewhat "cosy", and the kitchen is not the best stocked in the world. Other than that it's a good place to be...and Steph and the team do a good job of keeping the place ship shape. Recommended
