Nestled close to Queenstown, The Rees Hotel, Luxury Apartments and Lakeside Residences is lauded for its scenic lakeside locale and stunning decor that create a comfortable atmosphere. While rooms are applauded for their spaciousness and views, guests have mixed feelings about the luxury quotient and navigation within the property. The hotel's cleanliness and amenities, including free shuttles and full kitchens, generally meet guest expectations.
However, service experiences, particularly with shuttles and breakfast, can vary. Despite its charm, the hotel's value for money has been questioned by some due to the high costs associated with its offerings.

My husband and I spent five days at The Rees during our honeymoon, and it was a great experience overall. The staff were super friendly and helpful from the moment we arrived. Check-in felt personal, and they even helped us with our luggage and made sure we found our room easily. Throughout our stay, they went above and beyond—storing our luggage after we checked out and even arranging for someone to meet us at the airport with it after our overnight cruise.
We stayed in a one-bedroom apartment, and I highly recommend it if you’re planning a longer stay or doing lots of activities. It had everything we needed, including a washer and dryer (with laundry detergent provided!), a full kitchen with all the basics, a full-size fridge/freezer, and even a dishwasher. We cooked our own breakfasts every day, which saved us some money since the hotel breakfast didn’t seem worth the cost. Dinner at the on-site restaurant, however, was fantastic!
The complimentary shuttle to downtown was a nice perk, but it didn’t run as frequently as we’d have liked. For example, if you had a 9 a.m. activity planned, you’d need to take the 8 a.m. shuttle, and evening spots filled up quickly. We ended up using the local bus instead—it was easy, affordable ($2 with a Bee Card), and ran often, with the hotel shuttle as a backup.
Overall, we were really happy with our stay at The Rees. The apartment setup made it feel like a home away from home, and the staff made sure everything was smooth from start to finish.

Thank you for your thoughtful review, Cara! Congratulations on your honeymoon, and we’re honoured you chose The Rees Hotel for such a special occasion. It’s wonderful to hear that you had a great experience overall and that our team’s friendly and helpful service made your stay memorable, from check-in to the thoughtful handling of your luggage after check-out. We’re delighted you enjoyed the one-bedroom apartment and found it perfect for a longer stay. It’s great to know you made the most of the fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, and other amenities—it truly sounds like a home away from home! We’re also pleased you had a fantastic dinner at our on-site restaurant. We appreciate your feedback about the complimentary shuttle. While it’s a convenient perk, we understand the frequency limitations and how that impacted your plans. It’s good to hear that the local bus provided an easy and affordable alternative. Thank you again for your kind words, and we’re thrilled you were happy with your stay. We hope to welcome you back to The Rees Hotel for another memorable visit in the future. Safe travels!

I hired a travel agent to book our trip to Australia and New Zealand. So I did not choose this hotel.
On entering the room, the drop-dead view almost floored me. I may not have chosen such a pricey hotel if I were booking it myself, but what greeted us was really a million-dollar view. And the room was spacious with a separate area for TV viewing and chairs and a (too-small-to-eat-on) table on the veranda.
The hotel provided transportation to pick us up and return us to the airport. There also is a daily shuttle that takes patrons into town (about a 10-minute ride) on the hour from 8 am to 8 pm. Pick ups are available at 15 past the hour about the same times.
There is a laundry area with two washers and two dryers. Use of the machines is complimentary, including laundry soap. I loved this amenity, especially since I was 10 days into a 19 day trip. The only bad thing is that people leave their clothes in the machines for hours.
We did not eat at the hotel. We had early morning departures and had light breakfast snacks that we bought ahead of time (there is a great grocery store in town) with coffee and tea (the latter two are available in the room). We looked over the hotel's dinner menu and the offerings were very limited, not to our liking, and quite pricey.
We ate dinner in town two out of three nights and brought meat pies back on a third night. There is varied and really good food in town (a popular burger place with endless lines, a meat pie bakery, an Asian noodle house, Indian, Thai, and other types of eateries).
I did not bring my laptop on this vacation trip. And my niece needed me to edit her college-entry essay. My Microsoft Word program would not work on the guest computer. The concierge told me to email the document to his computer. Since the area was not busy (it was an early Saturday afternoon), he let me use his computer to edit the file. This was such a big favor that was sooo appreciated. (Hopefully, my niece gets into her Ivy League choice.)
From the shuttle drivers to the front-desk staff to the amazing concierge, we received first-class service.

Kia ora, Thank you for your lovely and comprehensive review! We’re delighted to hear that your time at The Rees Hotel was marked by our “million-dollar” lake views, spacious rooms, and dedicated service from our staff. It sounds like the complimentary laundry facilities were especially helpful during your travels, and we understand how valuable these amenities can be on a longer trip. We're also glad the airport transfers and shuttle service made getting to and from Queenstown convenient. Thank you for letting us know about the challenge with guests leaving items in the machines; we'll certainly look at ways to keep this area running smoothly. We’re happy that our concierge was able to assist you with editing your niece's college essay—fingers crossed for her acceptance! It’s wonderful to hear that our team made a meaningful difference in your stay, from the shuttle drivers to the concierge and front desk. We understand you opted to dine in town, as Queenstown offers a fantastic range of dining options to suit different tastes. Thank you for mentioning the dinner menu feedback, which we’ll pass along to our culinary team. We truly appreciate your review, and it would be an honour to welcome you back for another visit, whether planned through a travel agent or personally chosen. Wishing your niece all the best with her university applications! Ngā mihi nui, Fenna Neumann

Situated away from the hustle & bustle of Queenstown centre, the Rees Hotel offers fabulous views with a luxurious feel just 8 mins from the town’s hub. Our room was impeccably clean with quality furnishings, including air-conditioning and a fire, a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher & washing machine with tumble drier (the room was serviced daily). The buffet breakfast was vast and catered for every need. We also enjoyed dinner in the True South restaurant - the ‘Trust the Chef’ option was outstanding. A bonus is the hourly complimentary shuttle bus from the reception area into the centre of Queenstown, otherwise the pleasant lakeside walk takes 40 mins.

We had a wonderful 4 night stay at the Rees at the end of December. We were a family of 2 adults and 4 children and had a two bedroom apartment connected to a lake view room. The apartment was fully appointed with kitchen and washer/dryer. The views of the lake and mountain were amazing. I cannot say enough about the staff. The concierge team was exceptional answering numerous emails very quickly leading up to the trip. They booked a Milford sound trip with scenic flight back as well as a kayak trip. They also helped with dinner reservations and transportation. The shuttle system is nice to get into town but knowing exact timings can be hard. Uber was also extremely easy though. Only complaint from the room is we wished AC worked better and the beds were a bit more comfortable.
The bar area in main lobby is small but they made great drinks. We had an especially good experience with Ashish who made great drinks but also did a private wine tasting for me and my wife with entrance into the cellar. He was very knowledgeable about the wines and made it a tremendous experience. I would highly recommend it.
Overall this hotel was one of the best we have experienced!

We stayed in Apt. 6091 for 3 nights in Queenstown on our journey around the South Island. We enjoyed the lake view, free shuttle to town. Being able to grab a buffet breakfast with plenty of amenities & to wash clothes in the provided washer & dryer was a huge plus during our 18 day tour of the North & South islands. The young black woman who made sure we had a clean table for breakfast & brought us our flat whites was amazing. I’m sorry I do not recall her name. She was so friendly & helpful. All the staff we came in contact with were helpful. Having a kitchen, 2 bedrooms & bathrooms made for a comfortable stay for our children 19 & 20 & us. We would love to come back to Queenstown & when we do we’ll be sure to stay at the Rees Hotel.

We stayed here for our March honeymoon in Queenstown, and we are so grateful we choose the Rees after doing a lot of research!
The location was perfect. It's exactly ten minutes from downtown Queenstown and ten minutes from the airport right off the main road. The location on the cliffs of Lake Wakatipu give you one of the best views in all of New Zealand of both the lake AND the Remarkables mountain range. We loved being able to enjoy the view from our room, the breakfast/dinner dining room, and the lobby wine bar from sunrise to sunset!
The medium size of the hotel gives it a quieter, intimate vibe with all of the perks/amenities of a large chain. The staff cares here, and it shows with the spotless daily room service and the impeccable breakfast buffet. At night, the dining room transforms to a world-class, five-star restaurant... definitely make a booking to get one of the tables near the window! If a casual meal is more your style, try one of the small bites at the wine bar in the lobby... so good, and so cozy, and the sommelier Jessika is the best.
Another perk to the location is that it's far enough away from Queenstown (10 mins) that you avoid the horrible traffic/tourist insanity of downtown. The hotel offers both a free shuttle service and free parking for guests brave enough to drive in Queenstown, and we were happy to discover that our helicopter tour (Glacier Southern) also picks up from the hotel.
The hotel also knows its international guests well: there's complimentary washer/dryer self-laundry services for world travelers running low on clean clothes!
Overall: this hotel mixes convenience with world class service. They know you are here for great views, great food while on the go... the excellent location and amentities help you explore all that Queenstown has to offer.

Great staff, very friendly. Awesome view of the lake and mountains (with snow on top) from the lounge room of our spacious apartment (6021) without any buildings/roof tops in front to spoil it. Other rooms closer to reception will have the roof of more apartments below in the view. I think we were upgraded from a 1 bedroom executive room to a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom, which allowed us to spread out.
Dinner at True South restaurant was very good, try out the crayfish toasted sandwich for entree (delicious). The Royalburn Station lamb backstrap for main meal was tender, succulent and cooked to perfection.
Excellent courtesy bus service into Queenstown runs on the hour, make sure you book it both ways.
Chromecast either did not work or was very patchy when it did. Could not stream a whole show. Given that the TV's appeared to be reasonably new Samsungs and, at over NZ$900/night, this needs to be sorted out.
The heating options in the lounge right next to the main bedroom (split system and gas fireplace) were both pretty noisy, so we could not have them running when going to bed. Fortunately, there was a wall heater in the bedroom room which was silent.
Beware that this property takes full payment on check in (not check out), which caught us by surprise when our credit card got maxed out.

Kia Ora Tony, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your stay, particularly the breathtaking views from your spacious apartment and your dining experience at True South restaurant. The crayfish toasted sandwich and the Royalburn Station lamb backstrap are indeed our guest favourites and we are glad you enjoyed them! We're also happy to know that our staff made a positive impression on you and that the courtesy bus service added convenience to your Queenstown experience. We apologise for the issues you encountered with the Chromecast. We recently rolled out this upgrade with the installation of brand new Samsung TVs and are having some teething issues with the program which we are working through with the developer to remedy as quickly as possible as we understand the importance of a seamless guest experience. Regarding the payment process, we regret that this caught you by surprise. We strive to make our payment policies clear at the time of booking, but we’ll certainly review our communication to ensure it is more transparent moving forward. Thank you once again for your constructive feedback. We hope to welcome you back to our property in the future and provide an even better experience. Warm regards, Micka McDonald

I have recently returned from a Queenstown New Zealand where we stayed at the Rees Hotel in Queenstown. This is our second stay at The Rees and it did not disappoint! I would honestly rate our experience a 10/10! We stayed in a two bedroom executive lakeside apartment. It was looking over majestic Lake Wakatipu. The view in itself is spellbinding. The layout is basically a two bedroom serviced apartment that is very well appointed. The room is cleaned every day which I was very pleased with. The rooms were very clean! There have been many times at other hotels where we have stayed in a similar layout and we wouldn't see any cleaning crew for the majority of the trip. At the Rees nothing was too much trouble and I felt that the team were extremely attentive and accommodating. Our room was cleaned and tidied every day! The hotel is located on Frankton road approximately a six minute drive from Queenstown. The Rees run a shuttle every hour on the hour into Queenstown and they also drive back to the hotel after they do the drop out. There is ALWAYS transport available on the hour. They want to make it as easy and accessible as possible to get in and out of Queenstown which is fabulous! I always felt connected and not far out of town. The shuttle buses also have space in the back for skis which we found to be very handy. The staff were so lovely and I actually knew a few of the team from our last trip to the Rees in September 2022. Nothing has changed and we will be staying at the Rees again when we next return to New Zealand! The only area for improvement is the bar/restaurant menu. The food was delicious but it would be really nice if there were a few more choices such as more salads, veggies, soups or even sandwiches/burgers. It is the only area that I could think of that could potentially be improved or expanded. The Rees Hotel is an absolute gem! Thank you for making us feel so special and making the trip so wonderful and memorable! S. De Graaf

The hotel is a few kilometers from the center of Queenstown, in a quiet lakefront location. You can go to the town on foot along the lake (approximately 45 minutes) or by bus or with the hotel's free shuttle (departs every hour, from morning to evening, to be booked at reception). It has rooms and apartments, we chose a one bedroom apartment and we had an upgrade to a two bedrooms apartment, very comfortable and equipped with everything (full kitchen, washing machine, dryer, living room); unfortunately the lake view was partial because we had the adjacent building the same height as ours in front of the balcony! We had dinner once at the restaurant, very good even if the choice of dishes is limited, and we also had breakfast, good but with room for improvement: little choice of fruit and desserts, space too small. Very friendly staff. I liked the green proposal to replace daily cleaning with a planted tree of my choice.... Done it twice, let's hope they really stop them!

Amazing service, always willing to please. We had a fairly soft mattress. When we mentioned this, they had it changed to a firmer one in an hour no questions asked. View from reception and coffee area is amazing. Hotel room had a great lounge which is often hard to find. Bathroom is a great size. Staff are exceptional. Unfortunately the only thing that lets them down is the food. Breakfast and dinner in True South dining room is at best average. Dinner was a very small menu. The lamb was tough and the fish overcooked. Breakfast was limited, stale bread, hardly any fruit, espresso coffee was charged extra with no pre warning. The dining room for breakfast and dinner is exceptionally small and would not hold all if the facility was even half full. Would really recommend they re think their dining experience as other aspects as a high quality hotel are amazing. Would stay again but would not eat there. Hope this feedback helps

Hey sorry I just saw this question, and it's probably a bit late now. But, I would recommend contacting the hotel to see if their parking area can accommodate your size van. We had a large SUV and I felt the parking was very tight (it's underground and the hotels along this road are all built on a steep hill). But, the hotel should be able to tell you if they have a special area for vans which may work for you. Cheers!
There are more places to choose from in the Queenstown area.
