We really had a lovely time when staying at the Chalet Backpackers. The old converted hospital has a lot of charm and the staff is very caring and attentive. We also loved that the kitchen was very well equipped, with even a fresh herbs garden. Free Unlimited WiFi and Pool table were just the cherry on top of the sunday!

The new owners are doing a great job. The place is beautiful, the dorm beds are really confortable and the staff is lovelly. I stayed for 2 nights, they were still figuring out the heating but the receptionist provided me a heater for the room. The place is also very clean and have really good Wi-Fi, seriously, internet was great.

We immediately felt at home thanks to the warm welcome we had by the owner. It's a beautiful old building, very well maintained. There's a big sign with "backpackers" on the side, but it totally didn't feel like a backpackers. So I loved it even more. Very spacious kitchen with literally everything you need, even a scale! Nice little garden... More

Spent 3 days in this lovely old hostel. The Manager and her daughter we charming and very informative. We had a double room which was clean and quiet. There was lots of room for making meals in the kitchen and eating in the dining room. I was really impressed at how quiet it was at night, even with people coming... More

This place is freezing cold. Lots of charm though. The owner is a bit eccentric, but full of great information. Nice kitchen. The rooms and bathrooms were clean as well. I wouldn't stay here again in the winter as it was just TOO cold.

The room was a good size and facilities were generally good but unfortunately there was no heating except for a small bar heater to our room which didn't cope with the high ceilings. The place was virtually empty so I can understand why they don't want to rack up big heating bills but then the coldness would keep you away... More

We enjoyed our stay at Chalet in March 2014. We were appreciative of the staff who stayed late to accommodate our later arrival. It is a very neat old building and each room is uniquely decorated. The kitchen was nice and we also liked the large dining room. We had a room in the front (street side) and the traffic... More

This is a very nice old building with comfortable high-ceilinged rooms and clean communal areas. The kitchen in particular was very good and the staff very friendly. As usual in New Zealand, wifi was very slow and expensive and bordered on the unusable most of the time (run by an external company bent on gouging backpackers). We stayed in a... More

Chalet provides clean, friendly and very affordable historic building located near central Dunedin. Cheryl and staff are helpful and approachable. Excellent value for the cost. Sadly didn't see any ghosts, but the building has an interesting history. Thoroughly recommend it. Heather

Stayed with my fiancé here for two nights although wish it had been longer! Fantastic little place which is comfy and inviting on the inside, as well as having a very well equipped kitchen and comfy beds too! No bunks as far as I'm aware too! The stories of a ghost of an old man smoking a pipe in the... More
