I recently stayed 3 nights at The Classic Villa in Christchurch and was made to feel incredibly welcome by Peter and Jan, the hosts. My room was very cosy and comfortable and the included Mediterranean Breakfast was fresh, provided a wide variety and was plentiful - I particularly appreciated the great coffee! The ability to make use of the lounge and living area was an added bonus as my first day saw me having to complete a few hours of work that I hadn't managed to knock on the head before arriving in NZ so to be able to sit in the lounge for a few hours, working away and sipping on a coffee was really appreciated. I highly recommend this property to anyone visiting Christchurch for either work or pleasure as the location is fabulous (recommend Cellar Door across the road in the Arts Centre which offered a very good menu along with curated wine flights and for those seeking workout facilities, the YMCA gym around the corner offers a 24 hour pass for $12NZD which I thought was great value as I was able to squeeze in 2 visits.

Peace, tranquility and birdsong; elegant, well-appointed accommodations in a beautiful, sympathetically restored heritage home; outstanding hosting; generous guest facilities and an unbeatable central location (opposite the Arts Centre and a short walk from the Botanic Gardens and city squares, the River Avon, Bridge of Remembrance, Art Gallery, and the city’s restaurants, café and bar district,) make The Classic Villa a dazzling gem in Christchurch’s travel and tourism crown.

We enjoyed every single minute of our stay at this elegant B & B, we were able to walk everywhere which we especially loved, and our warmly welcoming, generous, engaging and thoughtful Hosts: Costa & Despina went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable.

We stayed in a more modern upstairs suite, and highly recommend, although the executive rooms downstairs were also beautiful and bursting with charm and character! The property’s stained glass was one of many stunning notable features, and the Guest Lounge where breakfast was served each day was fabulous for socialising and relaxing, with a range of beverages on offer, fresh fruit and other enjoyable light food options.

Additional Comments: Breakfast is very good (there’s an option on a cooked breakfast with fee, though we recommend you arrange this with notice, if possible,) wifi was 100% reliable, there was a cosy and pleasant outdoor seating area, and on-site parking options (first in, first served.) Huge advantage: central, but oh so quiet!

The location is all that’s needed to score The Classic Villa a 10/ 10, and yet there are so many more reasons to fall in love with this very special heritage haven! We can’t wait to return and recommend The Classic Villa without hesitation. Thank you Costa & Despina!

I was tweening between four and five, and I'll be honest, the free place to park is what was the tie-breaker, as that's not a common occurrence in city hotels.
This was the last stop before we traveled home, and whilst we'd been staying in AirBnBs most of the rest of the trip, I told the wife I wanted the night before our flight to be in an established verified brick and mortar hotel. The Classic Villa was a boutique version of that, but in a wondrous location, with easy access to the botanical gardens, the cathedral, and several restuarants. The hosts were friendly and helpful. Breakfast likely would've been fab, but we had an early departure and missed out. Room was a bit cramped, and my wife hit her head on the bathroom door rack once (which she anticipated doing), but these are minor concerns. Everything was clean and possibly the best bed we had on our 12 night trip.

For our final lodging on our NZ vacation, we could not have picked a better place. This is a beautiful hotel. The room was very comfortable and seriously I could have stayed in that shower all day. The breakfast was delicious and the breakfast room is very light, warm, and welcoming.

Steve and Jackie Clark are wonderful managers. Steve gets extra props because he remembered several months after I made my booking that I’d asked about being able to get laundry done.

Hotel is well situated for walking around - many great eateries close by.

We were sorry to leave!

Peter and Jen welcomed us with warmth to this beautifully maintained historic villa in the heart of Christchurch. We loved their hospitality and graciousness. Peter serves a breakfast that includes a variety of fruits, meats, cheese, breads and pastries, cereals and eggs. This is not a continental breakfast, but rather a breakfast feast! And he is a superb barista, creating delicious coffees as requested. We found our small and impeccably maintained room stocked for comfort, including a comfortable bed and lovely amenities. Thank you!

The Classic Villa is in the perfect location for exploring central Christchurch on foot, with the Botantic Gardens, Museum, Art Gallery and Art Centre right on your doorstep. The villa is full of authentic charm and our room was well appointed. What made our 3-night stay particularly special was the warm welcome we received from our hosts, Costa and Despina, who were happy to share their knowledge of the locality, recommending some excellent restaurants and attractions. We'll be sure to return the next time we're in Christchurch!

Convenient central location.
No tea/coffee making facilities in room, all available in main kitchen area, but it meant you had to get dressed and go down to make a hot drink.
Room rather dark in keeping with the age of the house, bed and pillows were rather hard. Room was clean and shower efficient.
Laundry service offered but at hotel prices.
Breakfast - lots of choice but not much of it and some of the fruit was rather tired. Extra charge if cooked breakfast wanted.

This was the best accomodation by far we stayed at during our South Island tour (out of 8 hotels). The hosts were extremely customer focussed, without being overbearing. The location is right in the middle of the city and the room was of a very high standard.

This is a small establishment ie perhaps 15 rooms or so in an historic type two storey villa. Breakfast was continental.

All in all this is definitely a 5 star accomodation, with great rooms, hosts and the best location with a short 3 - 5 minute walk to the middle of the city.

Located within a 5 minute walk to restaurants and shopping in the downtown core and the botanical garden. The contenintal breakfast is superior with may types of fruit, cereal and breads. Also included cold cuts, hard boiled eggs and cheese. The B and B is classic botique. Our front room was clean and large but had a bit of musty smell. The bathroom was smallish. There are 6 free parking spots on site and on street parking is available along the street for free after 6 pm.

We stayed three nights, just as the Coronavirus clouds were beginning to darken the skies of NZ. We got a friendly, easygoing welcome and a lovely front room, comfortable and pleasantly appointed. Tea, coffee and biscuits available throughout the day, and the continental breakfast was varied and generous. The Classic Villa is superbly situated a short walk either way to the beautiful botanical gardens or the city centre, and right next to the Arts Centre and tourism info point as well as the exciting new Gallery of Modern Art.

Many thanks Christian, yes this CV has been a big thing world wide. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay here and we certainly hope you will return again. Bestest thoughts to you and your family. I received this quote today. In the words of Robert Frost - "In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." Cheers Peter & Jan

Do they have fridges in the rooms? Thanks.
Answer from David W
Queensland, Australia64 contributions27 helpful votes
Short answer - no! When we were there we had no fridge in our room. However there was a (large) fridge which everyone could use which had soft drinks which we could help ourselves to during the day at no charge, and there was no problem with putting our own things into the fridge just for us. FYI if it's alcohol you're after then there's a deli very close by next to an excellent cheese shop (local and international cheeses) where we bought some very good South American wine at a reasonable price. And the city centre is within walking distance if you want greater choice food-wise and/or drinks-wise.
