The George Christchurch hotel garners compliments for its immaculate cleanliness and the high caliber of service, despite occasional lapses in attentiveness. While the hotel's sophisticated ambiance and generous amenities, including turndown service, receive positive remarks, some guests feel the dining options fall short and the rooms, albeit spacious and modern, could be quieter.
Its location is a hit for being close to parks and central attractions, yet it's noted that it isn't in the heart of downtown. The perceived value is contentious as some visitors view it as pricey, especially when considering additional costs.

We had booked for one night here and would happily have stayed for many more. A spacious, wonderfully equipped room and the nicest staff on the planet. Thoughtful touches throughout, from fresh apples on each floor to the laundry facilities. They also came in to give us fresh water, teddies and chocolate, we were offered complimentary drinks when we were waiting for our room even though we had arrived several hours early (international flight). They got our room ready within 30 minutes and with such good spirit.

We got this lovely hotel in a vacation package, but now that I know about it, it would be my first choice in Christchurch. The George is staffed by some of the most friendly, considerate, and informative staff around. It is ideally located near the botanical gardens and about a 15 minute walk from the Riverside Market and center of town. The room was very nice, turn down service with a special treat! They also have free self laundry which came in very handy for us. Would definitely stay here again.

We were upgraded to a premium executive king and the room was clean and had everything we needed. The only negatives from our 3 night stay was the girl who served us at the bar was unfriendly (didn't speak anymore than she had to), and the confectionary/mini bar is a dated concept for those of us from North America. At our subsequent stays in this trip we had the hotels remove everything that was for sale in the rooms to make the fridge more usable. Highly recommend others do the same unless they wish to spend exorbitant prices for chips and chocolate. Otherwise, awesome hotel and excellent location.

With the exception of the front desk check in, service was substandard during our brief stay.Don’t book a room on the ground floor; you either overlook air conditioners or the car park. We ended upgrading to a suite as the first two rooms offered were very disappointing. Service in the restaurant was very poor: the wrong dinner was delivered 3 times. Breakfast buffets at the Holiday Inn express have better offerings and no dried out pieces of cheese and empty jars like the George’s. In all, not worth a fraction of the price

We stayed one night to celebrate a Birthday and enjoyed the exceptional value of the Gourmet Indulgence package that included excellent meals and a room upgrade. This is an excellent private and quiet hotel in every respect with very well-trained staff who are friendly, efficient, helpful and professional; very much in the mode of 'olde- worlde' standards of hospitality that is so hard to find nowadays. The room was delightful with great views across the Hagley Park. It benefits from all mod cons and was exceptionally clean with a very comfortable and luxurious bed and a good-sized modern bathroom. The hotel itself is very well positioned for walking to the many delights of what Christchurch CBD has to offer and provides free car parking. The food choice and quality was exceptional as was the ambience of the bar and restaurant areas. You will be hard pressed to find a better hotel in the 'Garden City' as it was pretty much faultless. We enjoyed our stay so much so that we have already booked another visit for later in the year!

The George is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World but I’d say that overall it comes over a more of a comfortable business hotel than boutique luxury Our reception staff member was very helpful , swooping our room next to the main road and upgrading to a third floor room in the executive block . It’s was very comfortable, well equipped with good bed and bedding and decent if not lux bathroom We chose not to eat dinner in the hotel as Christchurch has far better choices than the limited hotel bistro menu . Next morning our breakfast illustrated the limitations . The buffet is average rather the special homemade choices you might now expect in a boutique or lovely lodge ; for example the bread tasted like mainstream multigrain rather than a bakery sourdough choice . The Muesli was very sweet and somewhat bland rather than tasting homemade . Boiled eggs came without a small spoon or butter for the underdone toast ( collect it yourself from the buffet along with butter ) . So breakfast food was decently priced but pretty underwhelming We had a comfortable stay in a located hotel - but not quite the experience we might have expected

We stayed 2 nights at the start of a 3 weeks trip to NZ from the UK (with a 1 night stop to come at the end of our trip). Although the corridors feel a little dated, our room/suite was very large with great amenities including kitchenette, sitting area and a very large bathroom. We were offered complimentary coffees brought to the room on our arrival as we freshened up after two very long flights which was a nice touch. Having free, on site, self serve guest laundry facilities was a real god send too. The hotel is really well located a short walk across from the beautiful Botanical Gardens and only a 20mins walk to the CBD. Breakfasts, although not included, were delicious! Would highly recommend if visiting Christchurch!

The George was probably our favourite of the 8 hotels we visited in New Zealand. On arrival we were please to be upgraded to a Park View Suite, which was huge, clean as a whistle and very luxurious in facilities and decoration. We ordered room service and the Eye Fillet I had was one of the tenderest fillets I’ve had the pleasure of eating. Just as we finished eating there was a knock on the door and one of the staff gave us a sweet ‘George’ teddy bear with some chocolates and water - another lovely touch. Bed was huge and very comfortable, so a couple of good nights sleep. The hotel is right by the massive and lovely Hagley Park, which is great for a relaxing walk. One of the stops for the hop on/hop off cable car is within 400m of the hotel and does a loop through the city with entertaining commentary from the driver all the way around. We ate in the Riverside Market area and decided to walk back along the river, which only took around 15 minutes. All the staff were so kind and pleasant, we nearly missed our taxi when checking out as the lovely girl on checkout was chatting away to us about our trip and what we loved about New Zealand. The George was certainly one of those highlights and I would recommend for anyone visiting Christchurch! :)

Given the price of this hotel, we had expected top notch facilities and service. In the event, we had to endure a 40 minute check in whilst they corrected an error of assigning us one and not two rooms. There was no real sense that the customer was the priority above administration. Rooms had clearly been modernised and contained much of what you’d expect of a good quality hotel. Some niggles included poor light switching and no power or charging points close to the bed. Noise from furniture being moved around in what we assumed was the third floor function room. Breakfast was satisfactory but the buffet was often depleted and there were limited options e.g no granola or muesli. Not much in the way of bakery products such as muffins, crumpets etc.
As regards location is ideally suited if you have a car, otherwise it’s a 20 minute walk (or taxi) into the centre.

My wife and I spent three nights at the George while we were in Christchurch. Would highly recommend the hotel. They pay attention to detail. We were impressed with the breakfast that we had. The food was delicious, and the staff was very pleasant and efficient. The hotel is well appointed and has many little extras in the room. I love the fact that they bring you a mint and water as part of the turndown service. The housekeeping staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We also appreciated the effort of the Concierge and enjoyed Riding the bikes in the beautiful large park across the street from the hotel. We are impressed with each and every staff member we encountered. Which is such a rarity these days. The George knows hospitality and we certainly enjoyed ourselves

Hi yes - decent hair dryers! Lovely shower products / facilities. They have laundry services but they also have facilities to do your own laundry . And finally they leave a gorgeous little bear “ George” on your bed on your last night for you to take home with you .
Hope that helps
We enjoyed the hotel as a boutique hotel very much! Ask for one of the more decorative room in the rear part of the hotel with access to a private garden and lounge. No pool but you will not be disappointed with the food and service.
