Rydges Wellington garners mixed feedback, with its central location near the waterfront being a highlight for guests, allowing easy exploration of the city. The atmosphere is generally appreciated for its tranquility and effective air conditioning, though some feel the decor could use rejuvenation. While the hotel's cleanliness meets the expectations of numerous guests, the value proposition is contested due to perceptions of overpriced services and additional charges. Room conditions vary, with some dissatisfaction over outdated furnishings. Service quality is inconsistent, with accolades for some staff members and critiques for others.

The location was perfect as we didn't have a car and were able to walk wherever we wanted to go. The front desk staff were helpful in telling us where to shop as the airlines had lost our luggage. They also had great sightseeing recommendations for us.

However, when we got to the room, it wasn't cleaned well. There were two protein bar wrappers on the bedroom floor, and the carpet had what appeared to be sock fuzzies in it. The edges along the walls seemed unvacuumed. Also, there was no extra roll of toilet paper, and the roll in the bathroom had little paper. We ran out and thinking we could last until the morning, went to the tissue box, but it only had four sheets in it. We called down for more toilet paper. We also told them the safe was already closed when we arrived, and we weren't able to store our things. Then we hid our laptops under the bedsheets and went sightseeing. The next morning, my husband found the housekeeping team, got a roll of toilet paper from them and ran into a gentleman who was heading to our room to unlock the safe. He had another roll of paper with him.

Aside from those few issues, we found Rydges to be comfortable, well located, and the staff to be excellent! The room was quiet, and the bed was really comfortable. We had a great night's sleep after a long trip. We would stay at Rydges again.

First impressions from outside were good then we got to reception and asked about parking to be told no idea! Asked the guy at a separate desk and he was great, helped with our cases and took the car to the valet parking (NZ$45/night). We had a supreme room on a corner with a small balcony which was clean and modern apart from the air con which didn't work (bit didn't matter as could open the balcony door) and the curtains which didn't completely close leaving light coming in (broken and poorly fitting). Other than that everything else was clean and conformable. Breakfast was very good and the staff friendly and of course the location is great and just a short walk to the harbour, shops and restaurants (about 10mins to the cable car). Car was delivered on time when we departed.

Stayed as part of a Gold Club Tours group and was very impressed with the room, the restaurant, and the staff.
Location was great, easy access to the waterfront and to the city centre. Bed was comfortable, bathroom okay (only drawback being the shower over the bath - challenge for people with joint problems!).
The breakfast was good and our set a la carte dinner was fantastic, especially as they were catering for 40-odd people, plus their other guests. The barman/sommelier was very helpful and knowledgeable - and very patient with a couple of picky red wine drinkers!
My only regret being I stupidly left a favourite blouse behind as a souvenir for them of my visit!
Recommend Rydges Wellington for a pleasant stay in the NZ capital.

We are day three of a five night stay and unfortunately have had niggly issues everyday so far. There have been daily housekeeping issues and it becomes embarrassing to keep contacting Reception. Today the room TV is not functioning and also today, we discover that the SKY TV channels have been removed for several days maintenance without any communication to guests. The staff are all truely superb to deal with but there seems to be definite weaknesses with how the hotel systems are run regarding quality control. Breakfast is very generous but does not cater clearly to those with any dietary needs. For an expensive 5 star hotel we have had a disappointing experience that unfortunately is more consistent with the cheaper hotel chains.

when I arrived the concierge informed me that there were no car parking spaces available and I had to go find some third party parking building a block or two away- an extra $26 cost for this 'privilege'. Room was ok apart from kitchenette area which was missing cooking utensils so I couldn't make breakfast in the morning. The shelf above which should have held them was dusty and dirty. The desk also informed us that the TV channels were not working/available but you could chromecast to the TV instead. Form some reason we could not get chromecast working with our chromebook. The hotel is quite far away from main drinking and eating establishments and very few were open on the Saturday evening we were there, so its not great location wise, apart from if you want be very close to the beehive or the stadium.
The Pool/spa/gym area was great apart from rowdy bunch of males who weren't being very considerate of other guests. The restaurant at ground level looked very nice but prices were ridiculous so we skipped that. Beds and pillows were very comfortable and clean but room was noisy from a rattling drain (gale force northerlies were in action at the time). Overall, I've had much better experiences at other hotels in Wellington so wont be returning to this one (Paid about NZ$229 for the night- 1 adult + 2 kids under 16 yrs). (+$24 for parking at another parking garage a couple of blocks away)

I have stayed at the Rydges Wellington many times in the past as a business traveller. I am retired now and this was my first experience staying in a private capacity. We are a couple in our 70's. We paid $40 a night for valet parking for three nights. On arrival we had to unload our luggage onto a trolley in the street by ourselves and negotiate it through the doors and into the lift. Some of our belongings fell off and it was only after this occurred that we received any assistance. The bed in our room was right next to a glass bathroom wall behind which the toilet was clearly visible. On the first morning there was a large cockroach on the shower wall. Our room was not serviced once during our three night stay. On our departure we had to rinse and repeat with the trolley, getting it ourselves from the lobby, loading it, negotiating the lift and then unloading our belongings into the car on the street. Then to add insult to injury we were retrospectively charged for items in the mini bar we never used. I contacted the Rydges several times requesting a refund for the mini bar items but my emails and messages were ignored. We paid a premium rate for our room and the service definitely did not match the price.

Check in was worrisome as they only have 32 valet parking spots that cost $45 a night.
And valet is the only option.
To retrieve your car you call down. Sadly, the front desk only answered on half the occasions I called down.
Arrive downstairs and no customers are there. Very frustrating.
Then it's anywhere from 10-30 minute wait.
And only once out of 7 times was I alerted that my car was outside.
So you're on your own.
The beds are very soft. Almost too soft and don't accept a room next to the elevator that has storage. Guaranteed to be woken.
They offer a $10 dining credit if you forego room cleaning. But this is only once a day and does not add up. So after five days you do not have $50 credit.
Location is good but not much open at night.
People who work there are nicer but again not attentive to alerting you your car has arrived.

Firstly the good points… the bed was very comfortable and the shower was very good
BUT!!! The aircon was falling apart and sounded like a plane landing.Tried to phone housekeeping and reception but phone not working. Went down to reception to report problem and told someone would be up straight away. Checked our car would be okay parked outside as we had only just arrived and were assured it would be ok. No one came to look at aircon or phone so returned to reception only to find we had a parking ticket for being too long in the loading zone. Manager (Sunit??)was passing at the time and he was dismissive of the situation and just said we would have to sort it out with Wellington council
No attempt to solve the problem with phone or aircon. Turned air conditioning off for the night because it was too noisy and was cold because cold air coming in from outside where it was cracked
TV was pixelated and sound not in sync with picture but put up with it
Complained in the morning about things not working and was moved to 1105
TV 2nd night same problem and then just went off about 10pm
TV 3rd night same problem but went off about 9pm Rang reception and they were able to reset it without visiting our room
Several times the lift nearest reception didn’t work and was advised that it often happens “just use one of the others “was the advice
We had chosen to stay at Rydges, even though it was more expensive than a similar room at Copthorne where we have stayed before, because we are PGR members from previous stays in Rotorua. We had intended to make full use of the dining and drink credit with our PGR, but with the reception we had got particularly from the manager, we felt it would have been challenged anyway.
On checking out, we were advised that we had lunch to pay for on our second day, but the receptionist deducted that from our bill when I pointed out that our $25+$10 no housekeeping credit should have covered that
We had thought we would “splash out “ for a change for the more expensive room but in all, it turned out to be a very disappointing stay
I am not in the habit of writing reviews, but hope that by bringing these things to your attention, some improvement can be made, although I am not optimistic

We stayed at the Rydges Melbourne and that experience was wonderful, so when we checked into Rydges Wellington the experience was completely different and not at all what we expected. We were greeted by extremely unfriendly reception staff. We called down for the location of the ice machine, and no one answered. So, we went down to the front desk and the person (different from the rude receptionist who checked us in) was extremely helpful and actually went to get ice for us. He also informed us that many of the handsets for the room phones weren’t working and if we needed to call reception to put the phone on speaker. The next night our safe wouldn’t open so we called down the reception with speaker and the reception phone just rang and rang. We went down and they said they would send someone up to help out with the safe. When I mentioned that we called down a couple of times and no one answered they simply said sorry, thankfully this wasn’t an emergency. Again, front of house staff was not friendly and when we went down a second time we’re down right snippy! The person who came to the room was very nice and helpful. The room was decent, but dated. On the positive side the Portlandier restaurant was excellent-good food, great service and a friendly manager! As much as we enjoyed our stay at the Rydges Melbourne the one in Wellington was not nearly as memorable! Stay away and book somewhere else.

Only just a Rydge's experience. Have stayed in many Rydge's hotels and this was a letdown. Room was ok and most staff were pleasant enough except for Grumpy at the bar/coffee machine. I was a little shocked to find a charge of $5.00 for half a cup of milk to take up to the room as we can't tolerate UHT milk. Unfortunately, it was night-time so we couldn't go to a convenience store to get 2 litres for $5.00! Never been charged for this at any other hotel. The tv was inoperative a lot of the time and we had to get a service guy to fiddle with the air conditioner to make it operate. The breakfasts were tolerable but became a little jaded. Small changes every couple of days would have been appreciated. We found it difficult to organize servicing of the room to suit our timing, my wife is quite ill and must rest during the day sometimes. All in all, an unfortunate stay considering the length of our stay and the amount of money spent. To make matters worse, my wife has an incurable illness and thinks this may have been her last overseas holiday. Sad. Should have been more memorable. One bright addition to our stay was Gemma, who fussed after us and made us feel welcome - a nice change from most staff. She was so attentive in the mornings that by the time we walked from the lift to breakfast, she had spied us and had us already signed us in to the restaurant.

Hello. All rooms have an electric kettle. There was no washer/dryer in my room, and no self-service laundry facilities available elsewhere in the hotel. We could have used the hotel’s laundry service (a fee is charged for each item). 19 designated apartment-style suites are equipped with washer and dryer facilities. Enjoy your holiday. Glenn

Yes, there is on site parking at $30NZD per night. They wanted me to pay $50NZD for the first night, but I had a conversation with the manager and told him how the sun rose in the east and set in the west every day and he changed his policy. Parking is via valet. It worked for us.
