The room was big, light and very warm. High ceilings and good quality furniture are a good match for thehistoric building and the lovely and in use old fashioned lift. The room is well supplied with wifi, iron and iron board, bath robes, towels, toilettries, a good blow-drier, coffe, chocolate and a nice tea selection, kettle and plunger.

The huge bathtube is beatiful and so comfortable! And the shower is also great, so you can choose!

It's a very comfortable space with lots of personality and charm. It's not a huge place and everything is well taken care of. The staff was also very helpful and nice

I was lucky to stay there. I found out that their website keeps a better price than accommodation websites, making their offer a very very good deal. I totally recommend it and I will definitely keep it in mind for another ocassion

The historic building was nice, and the lift was a good step back into the history of New Zealand.

The room itself was underwhelming, and the pictures are way better than reality. The bathroom was large, and bedroom ok, but the furniture was terrible (old but not in a good way), the shower to get hot water was a little confusing, and the 'mini-bar' was a couple of pringles, and a packet of peanuts.

There was no breakfast available in the morning which we did not know until we came down the next day, and over all service was a but MEH, nothing to write home about - the cost was cheaper than other options and overall was a little disappointed with my expectations not being met. It was nice and central, easy to get to a bunch of restaurants down Featherstone street. Room was a little noisy and had shutters instead of curtains, and a little room noise from others on the floor.

Having looked at the website and previous reviews, I was looking forward to my 3 night stay, but ended up being sadly dissapointed. The room was large on the top floor with a very spacious bathroom. There are lots of period touches and decor, but it is certainly not old fashioned luxury. Over time I would say it was borderline shabby with an old style musty feel and smell.

The lift is something out of the history archives, but it is fun once you have mastered the door and temperomental buttons.

But the biggest issue was with the room. It was dirty with lots of hair in plug holes (not just one or two hairs), dust bunnies, sticky surfaces, you can see where vacuuming stops and dirt begins). Despite the room being large, there are no drawers or shelves to put your clothes on. There is some hanging space, but you otherwise have to live out of your suitcase.

Weirdest of all was the bathroom. The environmental policy said to put towels on the rail if you want to reuse them. But there are no rails, rings or anywhere to hang towels to dry. So everyday we got fresh towels despite our best efforts to hand them on doors, etc. and contrary to their policy. There were other weird things like two shower heads but only one can be turned on and off, tiny tea cups (something that really bugs me), noisy lift, poor room lighting, and other 'unusual' details

The hotel may be well situated (but all Wellington hotels are well situated), but the place just shuts down at 6pm. You have to go elsewhere for food and drink. Even reception closes at 6pm. Weird!!

So would I return - definitely not.

Dear Guest, Thanks for taking the time to place your feedback. It is always disappointing when a guest has experienced a stay they feel is below expectation. You are correct in stating the hours of the reception are unusual with the 6.00pm-close. Please understand that we have been severely affected by the Coivd-19 lockdowns and we are trying our best to keep our team employed and the hotel running while looking after our guests. Therefore shorter hours in some departments. We do encourage visits to other hospitality venues in Wellington as we are all needing the clientele. There are wonderful places to eat very close by I will be sure to pass along your comments to the housekeeping team for review and ensure the rooms are fully serviced. We will take on board your comments to look for better hanging options in the bathroom as well. Thanks for staying with us. Warm regards, Tamara

We always love staying in the Wellesley. The rooms have always been impeccably dressed with every little, amazing detail taken care of (including the little triangle fold on the toilet paper roll!). The old world feel with the modern comfort of AC/heat pump has pretty much cemented the hotel as our favorite place to say in Wellington. Affordable luxury.

The Wellesley Club is like stepping back in time
its a combination of Faulty Towers and Old English Club.

Good value for money in a central location it is a step up from a basic hotel but without the frills of the bigger chains and while the downstairs cafe is closed on the weekends there are plenty of cafe options locally.

The rooms and bathrooms are a good size with comfortable beds and a quiet location - we would definitely stay here again.

Don’t eat there! A group of 21 of us went for a set Xmas lunch with a main and dessert with three options for both courses at a set price of $50. My main which supposedly was turkey, couscous, beetroot, jus and a sauce. What happened to the sauce and jus was anybody’s guess - the beetroot was a dried-up smear and the turkey was very dry. The waitress said she would get us some gravy which arrived when most of us had finished our partial meals. We tasted the “gravy” which was a very pale beige colour and was a new taste experience; certainly not gravy as we knew it! The dessert (soused cherries, lemon curd and rainbow cake) was awful, both in taste and presentation. Another main, the lamb, was mostly fat and the cheesecake dessert was partially frozen with a base that needed a sledgehammer to break it. Most of us complained and were given a complimentary tea or coffee with a promise of an explanatory email - which arrived and basically ignored our complaints and blamed our group for being troublemakers. Can honestly say the worst meal I have ever had in a restaurant. Had to give a rating of one but would like to make it a minus!

Overnight stay. Arrived late in evening & able to park gratis outside front door for the night. Doormen present so easy access to pick up room key & we chose to walk up the grand staircase to our welcoming (classic) room. Maintains the 1920’s era, wonderful tall ceilings, must be 5m or more & all the other trappings for the weary traveller - snack basket, mini bar & hot drinks. Left early morning for ferry, only 5mins drive away. Perfect city location, with reasonable prices, close to train station, harbour & eateries. Happy to stay again & recommend to friends.
Only one suggestion - a firmer bed for undisturbed sleep.

We stayed in the Jefferies suite which was just great. The bed was comfortable and we had a massive double shower with two individual basins which was a nice touch.
The night manager Tamie was always very helpful with any requests and the German receptionist (forgotten her name unfortunately). The hotel was only a short distance 10-15 mins from the main popular streets. We would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

We were so happy to have booked this place knowing it had an old- fashioned atmosphere. It did not disappoint. Lofty ceilings, carpet on the wide staircase, marble, huge dining room, working lift that belongs 100 years ago, huge windows and curtains and a very good used bathroom that is not antiquated at all. The staff were a dynamic group of young people who attended to our needs very well.

I love the old-world-charm of the Wellesley. It has character when hotels rooms tend to be all alike apart form the stationery. The rooms are large, the bathrooms are large, it is central, quietly comfortable.
No night desk so it pays to be organised re checking in, but the night manager did come when I buzzed so not a major problem. And more limited room service for food but not a major problem.

HI There, sorry for the delay in replying I did not see the question until now. For check outs outside of the reception hours just leave your keys at the reception desk and the receptionist will process your check out when she arrives to work.
